For those wondering about her albums: Alanis (1991) Now Is the Time (1992) Jagged Little Pill (1995) Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie (1998) Under Rug Swept (2002) So-Called Chaos (2004) Flavors of Entanglement (2008) Havoc and Bright Lights (2012) Such Pretty Forks in the Road (2020)
@@JacksonAxe No it's because she isn't promoted to the young crowd these days. So they don't have any knowledge of her unless they willingly seek her out.
She's not autotuned trash written by old men in an office. Then sold to the RU-vid "trending" page. Then promoted by influencers paid to say it's "lit" AF. So no she won't fit in today.
Hate to correct you, but she is Canadian and therefore unable to ever on any level, shape, or form be " badass" just looking out for you so your informed from this point on! 😛
The first time I heard Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill album was when I was 5 years old back in 1997. I'm 27 now and she is still my favorite musician.
Seriously?! the Millennial kids doesn't know who Alanis Morissette is? dude she was the biggest female artist in the 90's everyone know her and her songs man no wonder today music sucks
It's like rain on your wedding day It's a free ride when you've already paid It's the good advice that you just didn't take Who would've thought, it figures
Kids these days only gobbling up whatever being served to them. Thats why famous singers/musician these days lacks the credibility. Those people in power shape the industry according to their taste and agenda these kids becoming like a sheep and worship these so called "celebrity"
As a kid (born in '62), Top 40 radio exposed me to music from before my time. Every day, I passively absorbed older music with no effort needed on my part. My kids (born in '98 and '01) have had a vastly different experience without radio. Today's kids must actively seek out older stuff. Once they show an interest in a certain genre or era, streaming music sites start recommending more of the same. Good or bad, it's just really different.
It's not like older ppl always know WTH they're talking about when it comes to music either. No I'm not super sensitive to the term millennial. I just know I'm the old one. So if I meet that bracket, cusp thing, I just do. As a 36 yr old, just facts. Anyways, the truth about fans...: If you're such a fan of ____, name a song other than hit #1, hit number 2. Me: oh easy, I know even more hits you forgot to mention 😁. Wouldn't consider myself the president of anybody's fan club but whatever. Other fans: blah, blah hate, made up sh you know they're pulling out their asses. As a true open to alotta genres music listener: do you even know what you're talking about? Bc as a non president of anybody's fan club even I know you're b.shitting. that you just wanna hate on something. Simply for the sake of hating on someone. So many ppl lie, argue opinions, & it's really insulting. In general. When I listen to sh tho., I really listen to sh... I grew up in the Midwest. There was all kinds of radio stations. I'd give that credit for my exploration & curiousity. Due to locations, I'm pretty sure exposures vary. But yeah. I guess ppl now go to the i.net more seeking music. Or Sirius or whatever. Prob just depends on the person & what they do in their daily lives 🤔🤷
I remember one of my local rock stations back in the day playing a completely uncensored version of "You Oughtta Know." And I don't know which Alanis song might have made her want to purchase the album, but I remembered advising my very straitlaced sister that she shouldn't buy a copy of Jagged Little Pill because she would find some of the language offensive - particularly the line "are you thinking of me when you fuck her?"
I listened both 90s and 60s music when I was young and more , there are still kids that recognize Kurt Cobain was a genius and they are not of his generation. I was a teenager when Alanis came out with the Jagged Little Pill and Björk was revolutionizing music along with so many talented artists. I loved so many I can't even count them. Currently I love Billie Eilish and Bishop Briggs and I discover new talented musicians every day. Good music is good music, period. I'm tired of hearing people of any age saying something sucks because it is not of their era. Should we say that about Beethoven or Chopin, because they died so long ago? yeah, I didn't think so...
Alanis like me born in 1974. She's carrying the torch for GEN X. She started out doing kids TV with YOU CANT DO THAT ON TELEVISION, a Canadian sketch variety show in the 80s, taped in Ottawa. Then that opened the door to her musical career. And what a career it's been. She even had a Broadway play made out of that first album release, Jagged Little Pill. What an artist. You Oughta Know.
I was born in 1999 and didn't get my first glimpse of Alanis until freshman year of high school in 2014 in english class during a lesson on irony. From then on her music has helped me a lot, her music just makes you feel like you're alive when you're going through the worst. ❤
@@Riverdeepnwide She just gives examples of bad luck. Her song about irony not actually including any examples of irony is the best example of irony you can get.
I remember when she was the total it girl during the 90s. I think without her, none of the other female artists, during that time, would have gotten big without her paving the way. I still like her music. They played on lithium all the time.
I was in middle school when Jagged Little Pill came out...I vividly remember seein Hand in my Pocket video, still listen to that song to this day & reminisce on the good old 90s 🙌🏼
PTSD among celebs must be common.Trying to manage a career and success can be overwhelming. In actuality however most of us might be suffering from PTSD just trying to stay afloat.
I wouldn't worry about those people being upset about who alanis is. It just proves that they obviously have zero taste in music and or don't know good music when they hear it.
I always wonder about teens not knowing music from only 20-30 years ago. When I was a teen I knew stuff from that far back and then some, when the internet was just in its infancy and I didn't have the advantage of youtube or spotify etc. It's willful ignorance to not branch out and listen beyond "today's" stuff and they're missing out on real music by doing that. Like, how do you get to the age of 16 without ever hearing Bohemian Rhapsody? It's so incredibly sad what's become of music. It's soulless, vapid, computer generated garbage. A scientific study even proved it, and that's what happens when you take the humanity and art out of the process. You get teenagers thanking Kanye West for giving that Paul McCartney guy some exposure (honestly, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry)!
Mystress1980 Exactly. But it's interesting how so many of the current "artists" sample songs of the 80's & 90's and it passes as something new. I raised my daughter, who is 26, on every kind of music and I'm proud her taste in music is so eclectic.
It is no wonder people didn't know who Alanis is, considering her 5 or 6 albums after Jagged Little Pill are barely ever mentioned. I know this is an old video but for new watchers, Alanis has a new album out in 2020 called "Such Pretty Forks in the Road".
She got weird after Jagged Little Pill... saw her in concert when I was like 13 at Giants stadium after the album following JLP seems like she’d went to India to “find herself” and was taking herself too seriously almost like a Demi God(ess). On a high note a less known (esp at the time) Garbage opened for her which was awesome, Shirley Mansons performance put Morisette to shame.
No she is not perfect! Nobody is perfect!!! Why would anyone want to listen or hear her music?? It’s nothing but misery and garbage!!! I disowned that women!!!!!!
Seriously. The youth of today should go and listen to Alanis Morissette as they will learn that she's a great singer and songwriter she. I seen her live and she is just as fantastic. Obviously Taylor Swift respects talent.
Alanis was a girl on You Can't Do That On Television here in Canada. She then became a pop star. She then moved to the US and made harder more introspective music. But watching this I learned a few more things.
when jagged little pill came out in '95 i was kinda sorta seeing a girl. i was living in the South Bay (s.f. bay area) at the time, and said girl and i took off for a few days to explore the coast. trapped in the car over highways 17 and 1, she played this freaking album over and over and over and wanted to talk about our relationship. for the entire trip. i did not have a good time.
We are lacking in imagination sometimes. Simply because the event occurred where Alanis called during dinner, does not mean that the song is about him. She's a songwriter. She's going to pull from various experiences in her own life. And that, whether it applies to the person she was singing about or not, was likely simply seen as an ideal point to make in her song. Far too often I feel we assume we know things about people, when we have absolutely no way of knowing for certain the details about another person's life. Certainly not their motivations. Just think of yourself for instance. How much is assumed about you because of something you said or did, and yet those actual events either didn't play out that way, or your intentions were completely in opposition to what was assumed of you? We simply can't know another person the way we think we do. And I also can't help but feel that when we only see text on a screen, it isn't assisting us in our understanding of that other person.
I know people in Canada she worked with before she became "famous". Jagged Little Pill was her 3rd album. She was already under contract to another record label and producer when she skipped town and went to L.A. After Jagged Little Pill went viral those people were paid millions of dollars to let her out of that contract. Also she didn't write the songs on Jagged Little Pill...her producer did.
Grunge forgot to do its research on this one. "In 1991 MCA Records Canada released Morissette's debut album, Alanis, in Canada only. Morissette co-wrote every track on the album with its producer, Leslie Howe. The dance-pop album went platinum,[27] and its first single, "Too Hot", reached the top 20 on the RPM singles chart. Subsequent singles "Walk Away" and "Feel Your Love" reached the top 40. Morissette's popularity, style of music and appearance, particularly that of her hair, led her to become known as the Debbie Gibson of Canada;[28] comparisons to Tiffany were also common. During the same period, she was a concert opening act for rapper Vanilla Ice.[29] Morissette was nominated for three 1992 Juno Awards: Most Promising Female Vocalist of the Year (which she won),[30] Single of the Year and Best Dance Recording (both for "Too Hot")"
The fact that these teens took out their phones and went online - to text, tweet, or whatever other ridiculous shit people do to feel legitimate - in the middle of a concert, tells you everything you need to know about how relevant their ignorance of one of the greatest singer/songwriter EVER is.
I thought years ago she said it was a record producer that was still married that it was about? I remember watching the show. Or is that another Mandela effect. That song was for me about an ex that continued to want to see me but denied that we were CAUSE HE GOT MARRIED TO AN EX FROM HIGH SCHOOL. HIT HOME FOR SURE!!!
Who else isn't surprised Taylor Swift fans would show their extreme ignorance by not only not knowing who Alanis is but for questioning Taylor for having her on stage? Educate yourself people, there was a world and music before you were born and it was *MUCH BETTER* than the shit that gets pumped out today.
Strange in an age where access to information is available in a second that “who is Alanis.....” even got typed. That question could’ve been typed into google and would’ve been more effective than typing that into the unanswered vacuum of social media. I was managed to know who acts way before my time were in the 90s even ones I didn’t like . Perhaps acting defiantly ignorant and only of the moment wasn’t as much of a badge of honour back then. Dunno?
I could never understand why I always disliked Alanis but now learning she is the type of person who partners with guys like Dave Couliere explains it all.
Fun Fact: The song "Ironic" got a considerable about of BS due to the fact that none of the "ironic" situations in the song are actually ironic. Truth is that Alannis knew that the entire time that she was misusing the word, and that misuse is exactly what makes the song ironic. She was misusing the word irony, in a song about irony. THAT is ironic. One of those times when someone intelligent made a joke...and nobody got it.
I don't get why people are talking like she's been gone forever since Jagged Little Pill... A lot of her later material is great, this makes it sounds like she stopped making music altogether.
She's touring. I accidentally mentioned her earlier while chatting with my friends in game and one of them told me that Alanis is coming to my country the Philippines and the tickets are already sold out.
I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned that in the 80's, she was a child actress on a Canadian kid's tv show that also aired in the US on Nickelodeon called You Can't Do That On Television. I think she started in the 3rd or 4th season.
Dont know Alanis? You oughta know, or maybe put your hand in your pocket. Pull out your phone and you learn who she is. Won't even take 8 easy steps. Thank you
Alanis for her time was an Icon she was more on era when alternative rock was on the rise she is also was and still is a huge talent to this day. She been through many things the stage can throw at her whether be obnoxious fans throwing water bottles at her or crazy tours she did it and still does it. 90s still good to her voice even present if you can make it to her shows try and check her out she is quite a talent !!
I am new here in your channel i like your vlog because its very informative and entertaining looking forward to your next vlog and Godbless you more😘💖☝️🙏
She played a concert in my home country and the next day I intercepted her bodyguard at the airport security (since I was working there) and got her unplugged album signed. Hence, I probably also contributed to her ‘PTSD’. She was not friendly or showed no emotion or response after I thanked her for the previous night’s show. It took me weeks to get over her inability to just briefly ‘connect’ with me. In that sense, her PTSD somehow ‘rubbed off on me’. Lol! Anyway, that was the nineties! THANKSSS, (AGAIN), Alanis! Haha!
I love how these kids were able to use their phones and an internet connection to tweet stuff like "who is alanis" but couldn't think to type the same thing into fucking Google. 10/10!
Omg I am in love, I Love Alanis, she's so beautiful, & such a great singer, I absolutely love her voice, she's just to sexy, I used to have a 1 sided love affair when she first came out, & believe me it sucked , lol, ' every time I see her them damn feeling always comes back, man that sucks
How dare those millenials be rude to such a true artist who inspired a lot of people with what they went through? They are always on their mobile and they can't google her? 😠
Jagged Little Pill, in my humble opinion, is one of those "Must have in your collection" albums. I would put it in the line up with Dark Side of the Moon, Thriller, LA Women, Abraxas, Good Bye Yellow Brick Road, Blind Faith to name a few....
