What happens when you leave your AR-15 Magazines loaded for a long time? We answered that in the previous video but many asked, do they still work? This question comes up and many wonder what happens over time, do the lips spread, springs compress, will the mag still function? Dave found some mags that were loaded in 2005, put them to the test and now is taking a closer to look to see how they have held up. Will the old AR magazines work? Are they ruined? How Long Can They Really Stay Loaded?

The symptom of a weak spring first showed as the follower coming up in the last few rounds tail down usually, allowing the bolt to ride over the round in the mag. A strong spring would keep the follower level. The GI "green follower" was a good improvement, keeping the rear of the follower up and level. But it was still possible for the front to come up low. The Magpul (and a few other newer followers) keep the follower level no matter what, and this greatly overcomes problems with weak springs, if that occurs. Also, the springs made now are much improved, better materials, don't rust, etc. I had changed all of my older mags from the original black to the green followers when those came out. Since then I've changed all to the Magpul followers, and my mags function 100%.

I don’t think the vertical grip was long enough.

Mags wear out, the more you use them. Full storage is perfectly fine.

Who ever made the SBR comment doesn’t have a clue! It would actually be quite the opposite. A “over gassed” gun would have a higher carrier speed making it way more likely to out run a magazine with a compromised spring if said spring was actually compromised.

Anyone with common sense knows, an over gassed gun would have to be tuned with an adjustable gas block or a heavier buffer to slow the BCG.

@@tomconley2458 You can also tune an overgassed gun with a stronger buffer spring such as the ones sold by Wolff.

Some people take things too seriously. Silly gun nuts worry about stuff like this. Others go out and train and use their guns for work.

"Worry" and an appreciation for data aren't synonymous. But, yeah, there are a lot of dorks. You also seem to be suggesting that people who use guns professionally are the ones that should be considered as more legitimate in owning guns and acquiring knowledge thereof. You sound like that ATF broad who called gun enthusiasts, "gun nuts." This, coming from myself not even being much of a gun enthusiast at all... just someone who loves the principles that ground the Bill of Rights, and hates police-state, professional tactikewl elitists.
