So he's claiming that the weight of your fingers clenched into a fist at speed increases the force of a punch? If you watch at x0.25 speed, you can see that from the 1 inch distance, he closes his fist and pulls back his arm about a foot before the strike anyway, so he's telling us one thing and showing us another. It's a trick, by pushing forward the left shoulder and pulling back the right hand, combined with speed, you create the illusion of a punch from 1 inch, when in reality, you have about a foot to gain speed for your punch.
@fightscience
@fightscience 7 лет назад
+Kermitrocker yes it does. This is the correct way to maximise power over a short distance. There is no magic chi ball, just simple body mechanics to increase power. The concept of short distance power is not to physically pull the hand back, if you draw the hip back it creates a void in which to accelerate over. I would say well done to you for spotting, but I sense some negativity in your comment.
@Kermitrocker
@Kermitrocker 7 лет назад
Fight SCIENCE I honestly would have preferred there to be some disclosure about the technique, maybe noting that the "1 inch punch" is usually completed over more than 1 inch in distance, instead attributing it's power to the force generated from a fist clench.
@fightscience
@fightscience 7 лет назад
+Kermitrocker fair point on discussing this in more detail. However, it's more complicated than that, the fist closure has to be instant in order to benefit from the acceleration achieved from making the space. That's where the solidity of the fist accumulates weight. There's also the added factor of contraction to that fist on impact. These are quite detailed explanations for a very short video only intended to make a point about the difference in power generation between gloves and bare hand. There are many factors in play including the shapeless of your knuckles and the subsequent transference of power to a sharp point instead of a blunt object. Highlighted again by contraction and acceleration over the created space. Watch this video on hand conditioning you will see me discussing the importance of fist closure and note the speed of closure ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iDnY8zdnb6g.html. Perhaps we'll do a specific video on this in time. Thank you for watching.

lol im shocked they showed a slowed down clip where he clearly pulls back
@fightscience
@fightscience 7 лет назад
Adam, shocked is a very strong word my friend. The punch is in line with the theory of punching from where your hand lies in Wing Chun. What you see is the hip withdrawing the hand, which is completely different to the hand being pulled back. In the former the power is not generated from the hand movement, in addition the punch is faster due to the fact that you do not actually pull the hand back. Instead you create a void to generate power. It's a very simple technique of power generation. Hence the slow motion to illustrate. Thank you for watching. Have a great day.

Fight SCIENCE...Professional Bareknuckle boxing has been revived recently in the U.S. of America for any Wing Chun practitioners whom may be interested in pressure testing their art 'legally' in a full contact, one vs. one duel, with a referee present. It would seem that Wing Chun while not being capable of competing in a gloved boxing match, by nature of the mechanics, would not be handicapped in the American professional bareknuckle boxing circuit. If Wing Chun boxers start competing successfully in the professional bareknuckle circuit this would go far in gaining Wing Chun respect in the boxing / unarmed martial art world. So for Wing Chun sifu this could be the opportunity they've longed for to promote their art while making money in the process of competing bareknuckle. If the Gracie family hadn't tested their art in bareknuckle bouts Gracie JiuJitsu wouldn't have earned the global respect it did.
@fightscience
@fightscience 5 лет назад
+An Drew Now that's a great idea. When I was a younger (35 years ago), I knew a couple of Wing Chun guys that used to do bare knuckled boxing. It was very common here. Sadly the current generation are not as hardy, shall we say their training method differs. Let's hope someone rises to the challenge. As you said it is a legal sport. Thanks for watching.

Thank you +Sifu Mark Phillips. All of the factors you highlighted can generate a very powerful punch. It is true when we have gloves on it limits the effectiveness of what we can utilise in sparring. Both nevertheless have their place in increasing the effectiveness of Wing Chun. It was nice to see some of the clips from the summer camp many many years ago.
@philipsolzz

the fingers pull back and the knuckle goes forward. that's how you create that snap in the punch. all of the force goes into the person you're punching and it doesn't go back into your fist. this type of punching drops your opponent, it doesn't push them back. However, it takes a lot more practice than a "pushing" punch but it's a lot more effective.

This two year old video so prob won't get an answer but I've had boxer fractures on both hands. They about half a year healed but ofcoarse I hit an unmovable object. But made me second guess punching. Think I'm more likely in hitting with open hand like in Po Pai, or in the pak sau form on the dummy on strikes. I feel like I would just break my hand in a real fight. So more hesitant to throw punches.

+Blackshield good question. Definitely Wall bag. Try working contracting your body behind the punch when shadow sparring and lastly heavy bag training see this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-klva17eeqtY.html on 3 Simple Tricks to Increase Power. Good luck with your training.

For THAT style of combat u should practice: 1. Hand grip strenth. 2. The 3 shouts method. 3. And as He said...contraction practice. Fyi u can do ALL3 about anywhere! 1. Grip diff things at various pressures and time lengths. Be cautious of cramping and build up with calm heart. 2. They dont have to be loud though if outside at practice u can be loud ☺😉 So its basically 3 "ha ha HA" but at various timings and rythems. Think of a karate shout but divided into 3parts. But done fast it sounds like 1breath haha. Truly if u listen to a good kiai (karate shout) there are 3 phases. 1to build up hate energy 1 to prep to body and 1 for attack energy. The last also acts as a scare tactic but for good fighters u can mix it up and mess with timing haha! 3...contraction can be done 1000 times per day. From a quick jab to simply reaching for a fridge door handle!🤓😲😨 Also try using mental visions as a "pattern setter" so to speak. See it in ur head kiai and jolt ur body in an ALMOST strike... Also just tensing up the WHOLE body at once is helpful to prep for attack AND defence. Think of the power of a sneeze? Now add armour and a mace haha then u add a goor shout while smashing and those evil knight wont stand a chance againt ya 🤔😈🕵💪

Wearing a glove obviously reduces force, but boxers can and do contract their open hands into a fist at the moment of impact with a boxing glove. The idea that boxers always have their hands tightened into a fist inside of a boxing glove is a misconception, because it wastes energy and makes catching difficult. So I am calling BS on the "gloves are the problem" excuse because gloves universally reduce kinetic energy. Also, why do Wing Chun practitioners constanty try to justify obviously sub par punching techniques when you can just elbow someone in the face without the BS?

Sifu I have a question: I have a wall bag which use for conditioning and practising punching every week, but I can't seem to generate enough power. You mentioned sinking as you punch and contraction and the movement of hip. Are all these factors combined required to generate power?
@fightscience
@fightscience 9 лет назад
Kashif Amin Essentially yes. If you can combine these differing elements with speed you should be able to generate sufficient power in your wing chun technique. Our basic video on wall bag training should help you (see ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iDnY8zdnb6g.html) to focus on the differing factors such as quick closure of the fist, dead weight in the hands, and speed/contraction in the Wing Chun chain punch. We discuss this in the video. Have you considered turning training?

My wing chun friends said there is no rotation when punching in the style. Could you clarify? Thank you.
@fightscience
@fightscience 8 лет назад
+Kema Katsin I'm not sure how they came to that conclusion. The forms (with the exception of the 1st form) all incorporate rotational energy, especially the 2nd form. In fact, every Wing Chun lineage I've come across so far uses rotation when punching. It's referred to as a turning punch, often used with simultaneous attack and defence concepts. What style of Wing Chun do your friends practice?
@Alyxandeyr
@Alyxandeyr 8 лет назад
when chain punching, or using a standard punch, my school does its best to eliminate what sifu calls 'swimming', which is what he calls it when your shoulders follow your punch. The reason he gives is the kuen kuits "the punch comes from the heart" and "face forward and chase the opponent. That said, wing chun has facing movements for a reason. When you are square with your opponent, you have ambidextrous offense and defense. However, you don't always have to be square with your opponents shoulders. While a wing chun punch is released in a line with your center, your center is a column, not a rectangle. If your punch is still in line with both centerlines, you have maximum force. But you must remember to find and mind your center. Your force drives from your hips forward, so you are strongest in root power when you face the point that your toes and knees are facing. This can be used to your advantage, as well, when combating non-linear styles; a massively powerful kick or haymaker is a hard blow to intercept from the outside, since you are without the power of your forward root. If you turn to face the direction of the incoming force, you are able to meet it with full conviction. At that point, it would be a powerful time to turn back to your opponent and refocus your forward pressure on their centerline, using the momentum of the turn back to square to drive a much longer punch. That's basically your haymaker in wing chun: a hard turn to face your opponent, with the momentum of the long punch. Once you make contact, though, your structure is set, and the force that would normally be absorbed by the boxer's shoulder and back are directed through you and into the earth, where reciprocal force forces it back into your opponent. One of the reasons wing chun seems so powerful is that extra wave of energy. Once a regular person throws their punch, the force is absorbed by their musculature. With wing chun, the force is met in opposition of the earth, and the shockwave travels down your bones, and bounces back up through your body into the opponent again. Learning to recognise and harness that reciprocal force is key to unlocking the true potential of wing chun. When you strike someone or absorb energy, you should feel it in the arches of your feet. Elbow down pressure and proper alignment of the body is necessary, and it is sometimes the most difficult thing to teach, but it is what makes the true masters so exceptional. When they strike you, they are punching with the weight of the world behind them.

Sifu to develope more power should one work on the long bags as well as the wall bag as u demonstrated thxs
@fightscience
@fightscience 9 лет назад
Good question. As a general rule the Wing Chun wallbag is better for short distance power because you can really focus on closure of the fist and contraction. Having said that you can use contraction power on a heavy bag. ain fact it is more 3 dimensional allowing you the ability to penetrate deeper into the heavy bag with your Wing Chun strikes. Overall, use both, but for different aspects of developing the power of your Wing Chun short distance punches. Thanks for watching.

Absolutely . . . its in the development stage at the moment its being made by an ex employee of Lucas Aerospace up here in Milton Keynes I saw him a couple of weeks ago with my ideas we spent some time discussing it and drawing plans he is currently designing it in the computer in a 3d modelling program im due to have another meeting shortly to just fine tune it and then he can get to work making it basically its based on a wooden dummy but the head - neck - leg and body will all have some degree of movement to simulate hitting someone, the body will also rotate slightly and the arms will be spring loaded with very stiff springs I have an upholsterer who is going to make some foam/leather parts to cover the head/neck arms and leg and also the body . . it is going to be built to withstand some serious abuse I really need to be able to open up on it and have all that give something a wooden dummy doesn't do I will deffo keep you up to date the guy has asked if there is a possible market for this kind of dummy and I have said I will be putting it out there on you tube and no doubt due to the unique structure of it it may well lead to other enquiries
