As a taller guy (6’2 78 inch reach), the people who have the most success against me are guys who close the distance with overhands mixed with great head movement and mix up going to the body and the head. That last part is important, don’t head hunt against a much taller guy. We have such long torsos and if you punch straight you’ll find it, versus having to punch upwards to find the head. Hope this helps a bit.

I am 5'7" and most of the people I have sparred with or competed against were taller. This is definitely a good way to explain how to handle it. It can be very tricky to get them to fire so you can get in and strike. I find if you are shorter you really have to get good at controlling your flinching reflects, keeping your eyes wide and learning how to sense where the punches and kicks are coming (everyone needs this stuff but I find if you are trying to get inside like that, it is especially important)
@raydrexler5868

That’s because they know you’re doing it. You have to take a shot or two to get convincing. Just like feints have to be dangerous to force a reaction. If they don’t react they get hit. If they do it becomes a feint and they get knocked out. It’s about causing a dilemma and not a problem.

As a short dude, I’ve been learning that distance management, footwork game. Over time I’ve finally started getting comfy with watching my opponents strikes and range and then start weaving right out of range and back in once I get the timing. I also have to work with somewhat impaired vision, so this has been my key skill set to really work against taller, longer strikers. You will get hit but you will also start to frustrate your opponents when they can never tag you cleanly and you can finally pour strikes on them. 🤙
@haroldi.6450

@dr.dylansgame5583

Omg you literally described my Style and Vision I currently deal with as well. I constantly go from Infighting to Outboxing Range using Shell Guards like Peekaboo and High Guard with Hand Traps, Parries and other tricks worked in. and Also use Stuff Like Crossguard, X Guard, Plus Guard, Philly Shell, Thai Stance/Old Dutch Stance, Muay Thai Diamond Guard/Dracula Guard. Combining these tools with good Wrestling, BJJ, Judo, and Muay Thai Clench Fundamentals makes trading inside so damn easy even if your opponent should beat you. If you can learn to Smother and Redirect Punches, Shoulder Rolls/Blocks, Etc. You can be pretty hard to beat even at the World Level these are the tricks that have Helped Me Survive. As I have a weak body health wise, Even though i'm as strong as an Ox for my size. I want to pass this style down to future generations as I find it's the only style of "Boxing" that works both in the Streets and in the Ring. That and i've found anybody no matter the attributes can learn to fight like this. whether they be 5 foot or even 7 foot tall. And they could be the worst starter in the History of the Sport and they could still fight competently strong people reasonably. I call it All Fighting like Baki the Grapplers style. Since even though it uses many striking bases it still works in all the Fundamentals from Standing Wrestling, Ground Grappling and Repositioning, Sinking Weight, Learning when to Tense and Untense. Which is why I love "normally deemed useless" arts such as Tai Chi and Kung Fu as well since they have helped me survive by the skin of my teeth do to Physics and Body Manipulation.
@stephencallen7017
@stephencallen7017 10 месяцев назад
@@dr.dylansgame5583 exactly. I also do BJJ and now MMA classes as well. The full game makes every type of sparring just that much easier. I love throwing stance switches into my movement as this also frustrates your opponent. I’ve been playing around with mixing in the Philly shell now that I’m more comfortable with my general movement and my poor vision combined. I’ll never be the biggest dude in the gym but I can certainly be the most adaptable and technical if needed.
@dr.dylansgame5583
@dr.dylansgame5583 10 месяцев назад
@@stephencallen7017 Felt that its funny you mention stance switching as well. That's my favorite trick since I was born a Southpaw but was originally trained Orthodox. Then rehibilated the other side to an even level. Do to this and my unique vision and Philly Shell I don't defend the normal way guys like Mayweather do. Since I'm slightly far sighted in my Left Eye and Slightly near sighted in my Right Eye. I Instead use almost stiff Kung Fu like Blocks and Parries mainly with my Dominant Left forward like Bruce Lee. I Keep the back hand perfectly level to the chin and perfectly in a position where anything coming straight or under I can Dead Stop with my palm or elbow/shoulder even if its an Uppercut. And can outside parry to the sides for hits at side angles. I from their use any type of jab and hand manipulation to tie people up more then shoulder rolls. I love using Flicker Jabs and Lomachenko like Fencing Jabs on top of the Philly Shell Up Jab. Combine this with Long Guard half extended Jabs from Muay Thai I've dubbed Bullet Jabs. And you can constantly tie your opponent up. Combine this with being ambidextrous and constantly switching sides like a Peekaboo Fighter and you become a Handful to Deal With. Your opponent will be constantly confused since if you switch between 16 different plus Guards Ambidextrously on the Fly without any actual thought needed. You become as close to Free Flowing and Unpredictable fighting as Humanly Possible. Finding the Rythmm Balance so you don't fight too On or Off rhythm is easier said than done however. Do to this I can Switch my Philly Shell Chin Hand every combination to other combination and any timing in between. And the swap is so Fast and Flawless there's practically no gap to squeeze through during the transition even if they know it's happening. That and learning how to Dance like Ali, Lomachenko, Prince Nazeem helps you even when your at the worst footing and position. With all these tricks my form almost looks like a Coach doing all the Mitt Punching Angles but instead for Solid Dual Blocks and other Defenses. These tricks basically let me ignore most Jabs entirely unless the person hits well above their weightclass.

Great video! Two thoughts occur to me. One, this is exactly the same concept as in fighting games, where it's often called "footsies". Be right at the edge of the opponent's best pokes, where they barely don't reach, and then punish them when they whiff. Of course, you can't do a fireball, but the general principle is surprisingly similar. I just thought that was cool. Two, I think it's possible that "Be right where they think they can hit you with their longest weapons, but just barely out of reach until you get them to commit to an attack, and then step in and hit them with your good stuff" is a bit wordy, and complicated in the way most subtleties of combat sports are. I think it's quite possible that after enough iterations of this strategic principle, each progressively less subtle, you end up with "Be all the way out or all the way in". Either way, thanks for a cool video. The gloves look great!
@MoluskToeCheese
@MoluskToeCheese 10 месяцев назад

The "3 structure" of neutral makes sense in terms of real fighting as well. Attacking preemptively to cover space (throwing out jabs and teeps to stop people from running in), whiff punishing (basically this video), and advancing to attack (moving forward and then throwing a move to beat someone looking to stand right at the edge of your range).

The problem is, you can't simply answer "have better distance management". Its thousands of scenario reps together with thousands of basic moves->counter moves and footwork reps to get to the point where it works. You can't have better distance management just because your coach told you so yesterday. It simply won't be in your body reaction set. Saying "close the distance and pressure fight" is simpler, easier to perform, especially given the fact lot of people even on high level don't understand distance management. It's all about combo of the day rn.
@hard2hurt
@hard2hurt 10 месяцев назад
Oh man... ok buddy so you're on the right track, but still _very_ far away. That's ok because the vast majority of people are very far away, but on the wrong track. "Close the distance" and "pressure fight" are infinitely more broad and complex subjects than baiting a long range attack and countering. You're right about the combo of the day thing... you're right about the fact that even high level fighters don't necessarily understand what they are doing to be successful... but you're still way off. I didn't "simply answer" anything. I explained the problem and the solution for this particular facet of distance management and even showed a drill on how to improve it. It was a very specific, narrowly defined concept. You're like an adolescent who is angsty for no reason, or maybe like a dog biting people who are trying to help you because other humans have abused you. Relax. You are among friends.

I feel that it's good to probe without moving your feet if you're inviting something. If your high guard is your primary form of defense, then imo standing still is a probe. This is also useful if you wanna read the rhythm on a guy that likes to throw combos but it doesn't work that well all the time, especially in the amateurs where it's only 3 rounds and you need to score. If you train with distance and timing in mind, you can exploit at least quite a few things with the same punches. Which is why some people like to limit the round to just 1 or 2 punches.

One of my first boxing coaches taught me to pressure them by getting them to go backwards. He taught me to double jab to get them on their back leg. Back then I didn’t like the downward jab by borrowing your head down while jabbing. Yet it is effective at times.

This was one of the greatest parts of Prince Naseem's style of boxing. He had remarkable sway capacity and ridiculous footwork. And he stayed out on the end so that he could do the counterstrike. One of his trademark strikes, that long upper cut with a hop in it, is a good counterstrike that can very easily lead to a knockout. So, absolutely, in terms of figuring out how to approach the fight in a way that you can win, you need to be able to counterstrike. You have to be able to take advantage of an opening in your opponents guard, and they are the most vulnerable when they go out to attack. Loki this is something that is a huge part of hunter x hunter. The main character, Gon, figures out that in order to take an opponent that's stronger than him by leagues, he has to wait until that opponent is hunting and the minute he catches his prey, he can counterstrike.

This isn't how to fight a taller guy Im 6'2". This is how to fight. :) You have to live at the edge of the danger zone, and it has to be real. We do this drill consistently, walk in, and get touched. The larger challenge is every opponent and situation is different; some are more apparent, some are more cautious, and some are more twitchy... Tickle the edge of their attack zone once you have that you have control. Responding to someone else's attack while it sometimes happens is not optimal as your opponent is choosing distance, rhythm, and timing of attacks. Following/responding sucks. To take control you have to touch the danger zone. Well said Mike.

@hard2hurt the larger issue I've observed on this training is that people of course don't want to get hit. 🙂 They get just outside the zone and try everything to get their opponent to attack but instead it works against them and often they end up creeping forward but then get crowded and hit or get locked up in a moment outside the zone that gives their opponent the lead again giving away any control. It's a simple concept but to control distance rhythm and timing from moment one every time and do it perfectly is Bruce Lee level $***. 😎

From what I can see, what makes the difference between the successful and unsuccessful feint is the opponent being convinced that you can do something if you can get to the right range for you. If they believe you can't do anything anyway, you can't feint because they aren't going to respond to a non-existent threat. Yes, they will respond to your moves, but only the way THEY want to, not the way you want them to. When Mike is properly postured, Tyler doesn't know which attack is the real one, so he needs to react like they are all real.

With a good instuctor/teacher you learn that you have to step in at the right moment and strike/feint or first you "parry" (fencing) and you apply pressure. Even in Kyokushinkai something similar is taught. If you can angle, angle and find an opening.

people need to use defense more since the person with longer range can hit you more. You have to be more defensive. Also easiest thing to do is anticipate when they are going to throw make them miss and step in land your shot. When your in there range there going to throw or walk back, you can make them throw by walking into there range just be ready for them to throw

Very interesting, as someone on the shorter end of the spectrum who’s been doing fight sports for 30 years, it’s something I do naturally. But it’s a habit that came through sink or swim. It’s the first time I geard somebody explain it that clearly, I really had an aha moment. I also think sports karate is a good way to practice this. Because it’s all about that fake and blitz, or counter and blitz. It’s inherent to the competition format. A good format to practice this I think.

@hard2hurt but as u stated at the beginning being in u can throw punches better than he can so as a boxer I feel like that would be the best strategy if given the opportunity, of course as u stated I would move back to range not too far not too close just close enough to get in but if I get in and am doing good I'm staying in until I cant no more. Now for boxers would it be best to stay in if u can, I get the other sports u have to deal with takedown and knees and elbows but for boxing u don't really have to worry about all that too much just getting punched and his hits would be more muffled than mine in the pocket correct?

I've never heard a coach describe it as being all the way in or all the way out before (I almost always watch Teddy Atlas explain these concepts, and he normally gives good answers), but no matter their size the answer to winning is the same - hit and don't get hit. It's almost like the real question that people want answered is, "How do I hit a tall guy" and not "How do I beat a tall guy." As a shorter person, you're most likely going to be "inside" if what you mean is inside of your taller opponent's range, but what people seem to really be looking for is how to navigate getting hit on the way in. From what I've seen in my gym most people are satisfied when you answer that question by giving them the tools mentioned in the video. I only do boxing, so I'd imagine answering this question could become a lot more complex when kicks get incorporated, but it seems like you could answer the question in the same way and leave people satisfied.
@michaelcluverius1296
@michaelcluverius1296 9 месяцев назад
I think you're right but I think you need to keep changing ranges. Also, the more tools you have the more effective you can be at different ranges. I have a great side kick and can cover ground from outside someone else's kicking range because I can slide in quick with a side kick. Which sets up for fake side kicks to round house or hook kicks. Aggresive counter fighting is key but hitting someone from different ranges and tools keeps you unpredictable which against a bigger opponent is key to landing the hard shot they don't see.

I have a tall guy I spar every week. I sit at the end of his punch and throw a lot of fakes, I change stances and look for misses and angles to land on him. But I also find success getting right inside using head movement and ducking under punches and just going to the body. I always go for the body before the head against tall guys.
@DamnedSilly

Guys who get properly used to dealing with shorter guys (I'm lanky so usually taller) tend to learn to keep their elbows in and how to land a good uppercut with either hand. A weakness I'd never admit to an opponent is that straight shots to the body are a lot harder to defend than hooks.

Counterpunching is the answer even tho it's the hardest way to win against a taller opponent. Block and counter for example using your lead elbow to block and then answering with a cross once the action is finished pivot or just counter using a pull back counter in this case avoiding the shot and then answering with a cross. These two ways are the best. Maybe peekabo would work too if you are a boxer.

Some of the most important work is footwork, fakes, faints and broken rhythm. You have to strike from out of his power zone. I would practice sparing for hours and just work on circling one direction then the fake to so he thinks I am moving then redirect back and strike out there line of fire. Then practice broken rhythm slow jabs slow slow jabs and then a burst of fire.

One benefit us shorter fighters have is less surface area. If you tuck your head down a taller fighter more than likely will hit the top part of your head. Which hurts less, is the hardest part of the skull so hand breaks, and usually rolls off, making them more likely to break their hand. Also the taller they are the closer are hands are to their chin.

99.99% agree. I admit that I do say "all the way in or all the way out" all the time -- but I do that in the context of teaching guys to "pounce" into the interior range after an opponent's miss. So...its the same principle, I guess? With longer length comes a longer strike cycle (defined as the time it takes to go from en guard to a fully extended blow back to en guard). Like you say, when your feints and evasion are good, you're making them pay more cost for the longer strike cycle than their gaining in the reach benefit.

@@hard2hurt I think it depends on the context in which you use that phrase (I think thats true of most aphorisms). I agree with what you argue in the video that "All the way in or all the way out" shouldn't mean moving between two ineffectual lilypads. But I think the same phrase can also get across the point to be decisive in your entries. In that sense, I think it has less to do with height disparity and more to do with preferred range. If you decide that the clinch is where you can best do damage, then get there with purpose.
