I'm just letting everyone who says "my dreams are crushed" that just because you're watching a video, that may or may not even apply to you, should not crush your "dream". Even from the start, if architecture is your "dream", then you'd pursue it. I think people have this misconception that life is just gonna come easy for them. Challenges make your stronger. Dreams are dreams for a reason, if they were so easy, then we'd have so many successful people. That's why I really admire successful people because even though I don't know them, I know they've been through a lot to get where they are.

I started studying architecture, whithout knowing all the "not design stuff" BUT I still loved it at the end. To design somthing that works you need all the knowladge of the things that are related to it, otherwise you would be designing fiction. If you like building stuff in general its a great career. You learn a lot about the design process and administration and project managment of course, all that is needed to build a successfull (whatever thing you want), no body designs without knowing how to build it, that means learning all the boring stuff, but in the end you really appreciate it.

I believe the real problem is that architects have forgotten what their profession truly calls for. Most architects nowadays can hardly be called artists. When I think of an artist, I picture someone not afraid to try new forms of expression and having fun with it! Architects are problem solvers and creative thinkers. But most of the architects I've met may have had those attributes...back in architecture school! In the real world, they conform to certain ideals and find their own comfort zones to fall into. But that's not what a good architect should do. The architect is constantly evolving, an ever-changing member of society. All those wonderful things architecture teaches you, when was the last time a practicing architect seriously and sincerely contemplated upon? Most have become slaves to computers and haven't lifted a pencil in ages. The best architect is the one who can balance a pencil on paper alongside a mouse with a program. If the architect fails to evolve with the passage of time, his profession will become extinct, and he will become lost to history...

The fact that architecture is evolving a lot nowadays, integrating a well-being concept much more than in the past, makes me think that architects actually understand how to evolve. I don't see any downsides on using the computer instead of the paper, besides the skill for its own sake, it is also that a form of evolution.

As an introvert I can't see myself enjoying the people part, I mean if it is every once or twice a week then it's fine but I need to be left alone with my own thoughts to be able to properly do things... i'm good at making conversation but it really does wear down on me :/ Is this a really social career? if so then I have that and math playing against me if I where to give this a go. Everything else I wouldn't mind at all, I know a lot of work goes behind creating a structure so i'm fine with that, I know I have the passion to want to see the end result and this is what is driving me so hard into this career path, i'm 21! I need a future!
@Herbaling
@Herbaling 9 лет назад
As a fellow introvert, I'm sceptical as well, BUT. I treat it as something I'd have to simply deal with if I were to be in such profession. Granted, I'm not an architect, but I plan on being one. As difficult as it may be, it's simply something one must learn to cope with. It wouldn't be friend making or anything, it would be simply a business. Obviously, charisma and all would help, but they're not necessary. Just try not to be an asshole and try to be kind to other people, because they're your potential clients. I personally will most likely have problems with making people recognize me and to spread word about my business, etc. That's the huge issue for me since I have absolutely no idea how one can achieve that. I know it would sound better if I actually was an architect, but still, I hope I shined some light on your issue.

+Brandon Luco I'm a horrible introvert. just started working this archithingy and i've always been concerned about the negotiation with the client and social stuff... but i guess it can be better if you thing of it as a skill that we previously lacked, soon to be aquired. after all it can't be done without it so with patience it will be dealt with.
@alphabah401
@alphabah401 7 лет назад
Brandon Luco look at it this way: being an introvert doesn't stop you from speaking to people, it just means that you like hanging out in small groups. Truth is that no person is a true introvert or extrovert. Now you may be shy but shyness comes from a place of insecurity and that can be fixed. If you want to be an architect, go ahead and be one but don't let small knacks stop you

As stated by someone else in the comments section. Every profession is going to have it's "joys & pitfalls". Architecture is a business and as such will include certain challenges associated with doing business. As Bob Dylan once sang, "everyone works for someone". Meaning, the stuff that gets designed also has to get built because someone commissioned it. There's all kinds of challenges that come along with making that happen.

I am in an architecture program now. I really feel like this is what i was simply meant to do. The overall knowledge you gain is tremendous, but it is a lot of work and you must be dedicated. I remember wanting this since middle school. I tried engineering for a couple years then decided to listen to my kid self, and here I am. =] I will do what I have to professionally, to get my name known. People drop the program all the time. Its not for everyone.

I'm a recent part 2 (masters) graduate in London. This video is very true. Architecture is about realising a vision - drawing is a part of that, but truely being able to achieve your intervention and its purpose is about accepting, perfecting and loving the process from conception to completion.

I think that could be really true. I am in my first year of arch school and while I really love, love, love all the variety and complexity of my studies, I also think that in the real world things CAN NOT be so dreamy..idealised.."artistic". Truth is, an architect is still a person that works in an office and faces problem-solving on a daily basis. And while we sell dreams and CAN use our creativity when given the opportunity and the financing, not everyone can be Le Corbusier and complete so many villas, public buildings etc. that promote architecture and get to be talk of the town.

The world needs architects. And there are certainly worse choices you could make. That said - I found this video to be spot on. What the video did not touch on are the endless deadlines and endless pressure to deliver projects faster and cheaper. That's when your busy - and when you're not busy you're not getting paid. As the video said, I value the education I've received as a architect, the ideas and many of the people I've been exposed to but after 28 years of practice - I'm going back to school and changing careers. The rewards just aren't worth the struggle for me.

Usually comes in; imperial- feet and inches or metric - mm and cm corresponding to spaces in meters. You use it only as a tool for measuring drawings on paper and almost never to draw with. Cheers,

As an architect, we touch all realms of idea. Understand, most people don't even understand how the earth rotates around the sun and why windows are placed to keep natural air flow... let alone real arches, don't be down. Architecture is so refined as a philosophy, artists, and dreamers. Yet, know the business because those who only want profits will try to kill your dream. Yest, be aware. Bring forth your imagination. What is imagined with focus brings it to life. Don't give up on your dreams!

For those that want to design their own buildings and not just draw what is dictated by those higher up who get to design the buildings, open your own practice. Or get higher up the food chain in one that you are already in. For those wanting to just stick to drawing though, may i recommend being an Architectural Technician. A tech draws and documents the plans, including details. Great job for those who love technical drafting and love to know the nuts and bolts of how buildings go together.

HEY FAM!!! Why are you giving up so easily just because being an Architect is challenging for you? I want to be an architect too but reading in the comment section, I see people letting their dreams be wasted because its "too challenging or hard to do". If you think someone says to you "Ha your drawing sucks hard. You don't deserve to be an architect!", will you give up? OF COURSE NOT!!! DON'T GIVE UP OR STOP!!! You're trying to make your dream become wasted all because of a response from an architect! Do you think one lousy negative statement can overpower your dream job when you were a little kid? Of course not! I won't let anyone tell me that "You should stop becoming an architect, it's too hard." I will not let my dream job become wasted all because of one lousy comment. Now, are you gonna stay on the floor crying that you can't become an architect because its too hard or ARE YOU GONNA BE A FIGHTER AND ACHIEVE THAT DREAM JOB WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG!!! i think it's good that they've trained us in designing. that way, during our practice as professionals we don't have to worry much about the design anymore. we can turn our focus on our clients and co-workers. ;)

@pinkbug8u Consider commercial Interior design too. You are much more likely to be able to get your design recreated in real life and in a 1/10 of the time. There will be plenty of technical and busy work involved.

It is true, as a employee we might not have a great salary. But as an entrepreneur, you will have to work harder but there is a great chance of winning money doing what you love (design, construction, real estate, urbanism). If you like to check some examples, check Orange Investments, Hines, or investigate on the creators of great construction companies. Don't get frustrated, we have control over the architecture as we can adapt to the future or create a new better one. Cheers!

hey guys and girls, I have a question. When u form an architectural team how do you work? Does everyone move aside and form an idea that is going to be put on the table and be discussed along with the other ones to lead to the final decision or you work as a team all the time?

question, do you pre-sketch then go over your own drawings in finer point? Or do you sketch over an image you picked up or printed? I am new subscriber and from your videos I have noticed you tracing over lines...

after any major you choose when u get your degree everything else falls on how well you network, people always gravitate towards someone they relate with so once you become a contractor everything will fall in place one referral after another
@builderspluscustomhomesand2146
I watched this video... I'm a licensed contractor simply looking to separate from the crowd and be articulate with architectural aspects to help bring vision and inspiration to clients unlike no other contractor or cookie-cutter creating architect... My dreams are not crushed at all with this video. Matter of fact, watching 30X40 workshop, using some concepts I've put in place, I was able to land a very big 5 figure project. Don't let someone's video opinion crush anything but your negativity to keep moving forward. You don't have to be an architect to do architectural things. Articulate the market and you will learn to be more open minded about things and you will prevail.

Hello, I like your videos and the way you express you ideas. How often do you use math as an architect? And also, I'd like to know examples of how you use it, like calculating strenght or something like that. I'm very interested in architecture. I can draw lots of things. everybody always says that I should be an artist, but the truth is that I don't want to live from drawing, even though I love it but just for fun because I want knowledge too. I like a lot to do research and use math. See you

@infodizzy I quickly learned that one should have a love for the construction industry as a whole, not just design. This will give you more opportunities as well because you are not confined to just architecture - which can be a drag, and doesn't hire as much as other concentrations.

I've been worried about my career ever since I started my degree. I'm a 3rd year architecture student, I transfers from a community college. What about family life? Does anyone know if once your an architect, will you at least have time for your family? Or will it be highly similar to the movie Click ?

I'm afraid I'll end up being like the man in the movie click too I just finished my first year in architecture it's hard but I love it but I feel like I'm lost wether to continue or not and if you're still in architecture field can you please tell me about how you feel about it after the experiencing ? Thankyou:c

I've taken fine arts as my undergraduate degree and I gotta say, i think architecture might really be for me. I was interested in so many things and craved more technical and logical thinking that fine arts left me unmotivated and uninspired. I find the anything goes factor in art ( like poop in a can) was too easy. I like working within limits, limits set by things outside my own mind.
