The Truth about China's Wet Markets! 

No mate, not all the 'Wet Markets' in China are as organised and sanitary, as the one in this video. Nice try though.

China is not the only place with wet markets. You find them all over Asia. You can see some in Spain as well. "Wet market" is a name given them by the west because of the profusion of produce which need to be kept moist or in water.

Starfish, interesting. Never thought they would be edible.

Here are some starfish facts: Starfish or sea stars belong to the Echinoderm phylum that include sea urchins, sand dollars, sea cucumbers as well as sea lilies. While we tend to visualize them as having just a total of five arms, these organisms refuse to be limited by our assumptions when it comes to their number of limbs. With more than 2,000 species of them, there are individuals that present with 10, 20 or even 50 arms! It has a pretty impressive way of eating! After attaching its body to the chosen prey, it extends its stomach out through its mouth. Enzymes from the stomach then begin to digest the food. This allows the nutritious grub to pass inside the stomach, which in turn retracts back into the body where digestion is complete. While sea stars don’t exactly see like we do, they definitely aren’t blind. Instead of eyeballs, sea stars have tiny eye ‘spots’ embedded beneath the skin of each arm. Although the spots are certainly small, these spots are actually visible if you look very closely at the end of each limb. Usually appearing as a dot that is either black or reddish in coloration, these spots are photosensitive, enabling sea stars to recognize shapes as they navigate over the seafloor and around both peers and prey.

It's cool to see what a boiled sea star looks like. For some reason, I didn't think that the arms could be so easily broken off after simply being boiled or that there was anything other than muscle in them.

Even if you try to go during the non-touristy times, tourists going there isn't a bad thing! It's a great thing that a market like this gets a lot of visitors because it's all part of the cultural experience of Qingdao. You want local places, that put their heart and soul into what they do, to thrive! Mantis shrimp are incredible creatures! Despite their name mantis shrimp, they aren't actually shrimp! They're in the order Stomatopoda while shrimp are in the order Decapoda! Their eyes, which work independently, are on mobile stalks and have three focal points each. They target prey very efficiently! And their front claws are also designed to make them effective killing machines! These specialized appendages produce one of the fastest recorded movements in the animal kingdom! A mantis shrimp’s punch has the same acceleration as a 22-caliber bullet, delivering a blow of 15,000 newtons, a force equal to more than 2,500 times the mantis shrimp’s weight. That power is pretty impressive, especially for such a little guy! Their punch can easily break quarter-inch glass!

In Singapore our wet markets don't have stalls that cook the fresh food for you on the spot, that's such an ingenious and convenient idea.

I’m from Maryland, USA and I couldn’t help but notice at around 2:58…. ARE THOSE BLUE CRABS????? I know they are an invasive species in the Mediterranean and other places around the world, but I didn’t know that people in China eat them! Well, they ARE the best crabs in the world, so it’s understandable! 😂

I’m curious what phone you use, saw it in the video for 2 seconds. Also wants to know foreigners like you, living in China for a long time, normally choose foreign brands like Samsung, apple, whatever, which are easy to access play store apps, aka using android and Google, or, pick a Chinese brand like huawei, etc. but need to download apps manually when in Europe or the states? 😅
