We all love a great underdog story in which a person or group of people overcome insurmountable odds to come out on top. We love them in movies, in literature, and in real life. It gives us hope that we too have a chance at greatness if we truly believe in ourselves.
One of the sayings that are thrown around whenever an underdog beats a superstar sports team or a giant corporation is David vs. Goliath. The story from the bible’s Old Testament has become synonymous with underdogs coming up triumphant. But what is there to know about the real battle between the giant Goliath and little David? Here is the truth about David and Goliath.

So never mind the fact that the Bible talks about how David had a heart that repented for his sin. Don't make him out to be the bad guy. Sure he did some bad things but he had a heart that was repentant. This is why God loved him and stayed with him. You guys conveniently leave that out!

Elhanan killed Goliath as recorded in 2 Samuel 21:15. In 1 Samuel 16 Saul looks for someone to play the lyre. He then meets David son of Jesse the Bethlehemite. Saul knew who Jesse the Bethlehemite was because he reached out to him to allow his son to play music. Fast forward one chapter to 1 Samuel 17:55-56... As soon as Saul saw David go out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the commander of the army, “Abner, whose son is this youth?” And Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I do not know.” And the king said, “Inquire whose son the boy is.” Now Saul, who reached out to Jesse the Bethlehemite to ask his boy David to play the lyre doesn't know of Jesse the Bethlehemite nor does his army commander? Another falsity in the story is David cuts Goliath's head off and takes it to Jerusalem (1 Samuel 17:54). At the time of this story Jerusalem was under Jebusite control. It would be years later before king David and his men conquered Jerusalem (2 Samuel 5:6-9) This is just a legend of the beloved King David. It wasn't written to deceive. But it did sneak into the scrolls of Samuel. The story widely was accepted and a couple hundred years later the chronicler of 1 Chronicles 20:5 fixed the "error" buy writing the word weaver twice and changing a couple jots and tittles. Now instead of Bethlehemite (house of bread) it makes Goliath have a brother named Lahmi (the Bread). No Philistines had these types of names. Lahmi was made up out of respect for the David story. The chronicler even left out all the other bad things David did to not shine a bad light on David. David did not kill Goliath. It is pure legend/myth. Elhanan, one of David's fighting men killed Goliath AFTER David becomes king and AFTER he conquered Jerusalem. David may have taken Goliath's head to Jerusalem... but NOT when he was just a boy.
@philcollins1613

You missed a bit...Raphah of Gath was the father of several giants, including Goliath....and also a twelve fingered twelve toed giant. Goliath was not the only giant Israel fought. And other names for giants in the scriptures are Anakims, Emims and Zazummims. 1 Chronicles Chapter 20 relates a lot: Sibbechai the Hushatite slew Sippai, that was of the children of the giant; Elhanan the son of Jair slew Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, whose spear shaft was like a weaver's beam; And again, there was a war at Gath, where was a man of great stature, whose fingers and toes were four and twenty, six on each hand and six on each foot and also he was the son of the giant. Jonathan the son of Shimea David's brother slew him. And the chapter concludes with verse 8: "These were born unto the giant in Gath; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants."

I don’t understand the point in talking about the second story? Unless you’re just trying to make him seem morally reprehensible, or discredit him in someway? It is always a returning theme that although the “main characters” of the Old Testament might be living & working for something greater, they are still only flawed humans, & still make terrible mistakes themselves (called sins). No matter what level of good they achieve. I mean, there’s a reason why Cain killed Abel, and then started humanity himself. There are devils and angels in all of us.

I just read that same comparison in the book "The Human Faces of God" by Christian and Hebrew scholar Thom Stark. In chapter 7 of his book Stark makes a compelling argument that the story of _David and Goliath_ is pure legend... and I agree with his assessment. One of David's fighting men, Elhanan killed Goliath _after_ David was king and _after_ they conquered Jerusalem from Jebusite control (1 Samuel 21:19). Another point is after Saul knows David and his father Jesse in 1 Samuel 16 Saul refers to David as boy in chapter 17 and completely has no idea who David's father is. There is no way David took the head to the Jebusite controlled Jerusalem (and took his armor off) at that time either. The chronicler of 1 Chronicles 20:5 makes a minor edit and changed the story of Elhanan killing Goliath's brother to protect the legend of the great and beloved king David.

His poor ethical behavior as king is no surprise for someone who brought a long range weapon to a combat by champions... Spears would have been acceptable due to their short range, low velocity, and ability to function as a melee weapon as well. A sling...not so much.
@mikem9001
@mikem9001 3 года назад
Where does it say that a sling can't be used in a champion combat? If you look at Homer's Iliad for example, throwing spears and throwing large stones was considered perfectly legitimate in a fight between heroes. Goliath despised the sling, but when it turned out to be more deadly than he anticipated, the Philistines have no right to complain.

He wasn'ta King until he was an adult. He was a young shepherd boy. Where was he going to get a spear?? Plus, a sling was appropriate for his job in order to scare of predators that would try to kill his sheep.

@@johnsaunders2109 Do you mean David or Homer? Anyway, the answer is the same - there is as much as proof that David or Homer existed as any other historicla ancient person.

@@mikem9001 as much proof as Julius Caesar or Alezander the Great? Dont be stupid! The only mention of David is in the Bible, hardly a reliable historical source! As for Homer, clearly someone wrote The Iliad, but little is known.

@@Xx-po1fu feeling disrespected, especially when it comes to the faith of people around the world doesn't make them a cry baby. Religious faith is near and dear to some people just like a mother or a child is to others. Would you not be offended if someone disrespected your mother or child or something you keep close to you. People think it's ok to disrespect the religion of others and/or religion itself simply because they themselves do not believe but that's wrong. It's sacred to some, which is why they keep the faith. Calling someone a cry baby for being offended is just mean-spirited.
