The Bible is a collection of writings written in ancient times by ancient persons, and as such it's full of accounts of practices, ideas, and stories that don't have a lot to do with how we live in the present day. Some of the events portrayed in the Bible are benign or even morally edifying for modern readers, but others...aren't. The Bible is full of tales of violence, sexual predation, slavery, and more, and a quick reading makes it clear that the moral compass of the stories' writers don't align with modern sensibilities. Even if you've not read the Bible from start to finish, we'll pull out the highlights (lowlights?) for you. Here are the most disturbing parts of the Bible, ranked.

The most disturbing part for me is actually how many small children have been taught from the age of 4 or 5 that if they don’t believe in all this then they’ll go to hell and burn for eternity! The fear many including myself felt for many years of their early life is absolutely criminal. The levels of indoctrination are disgusting, my parents had to write lines over and over about god and if they didn’t they were given the cane, literally beaten until they did it! The psychological damage it does to kids cannot be underestimated!

Exactly. They take innocent young kids before they are old enough to be able to think logically, and they fill their heads with occult supernatural GARBAGE, using threats and even *brutality* to ensure that they've "learned" it. It's an absolute disgrace how DAMAGED so many of their victims are. Some never recover, and some are scarred for life, both mentally and physically. I remember being a small child in Sunday school, when I was told that "God" ordered Abraham to murder his beloved son Isaac, *just to see if he could make him do it!* I thought, "Wow, this God must be a real bastard!" Back in 1985, during my 2 year-military service, I had comfortable time to study the bible in depth, the 2 treatments, with experts and scholars. What surprised me was the ignoble character of God, killing people for minor reasons, not once but very often. Then, I realized this account is like a fiction or a myth, and must be written by humans not a genuine God. Since then, after reading various sacred volumes, I know that all of these volumes are man-made and all have the same patterns: a celestial being governing us, .... So, I don't believe in any man-made God.

Speaking of your grandmother, my grandparents had one of those giant bibles on a pedestal in their bedroom, and every time they looked after us kids (while mum was at work), I'd go in there and read it (just because I loved reading, not due to any religiosity). Read a real history book it should show the same because the world is messed up!! These are true stories- reality is harsh but Jesus came because God so loves us and wants us saved from this. @@askseeknock7 : You can't be serious. Understanding is the easy part. "Jesus came because God so loves us and wants us saved from this." So he impregnated a married woman (isn't that adultery?) who had a "son" that he let be tortured and killed? And this *"saves us"* HOW exactly? If God was really all powerful and all good (which he's clearly not) he could wipe out pain and suffering of innocent people in an instant. He just doesn't choose to. For some ugly reason, he wants helpless little children to suffer and die, without lifting a finger to spare them. And this is a deity you think is worthy of WORSHIP? He acts more like a cruel and heartless tyrant than any "loving god". And speaking of CRUEL -- when I was a young child in Sunday school, we were told how "God" had ordered Abraham to *murder* his beloved son Isaac, JUST TO SEE IF HE COULD MAKE HIM DO IT! When Abraham was just about to obey this sick order, "God" sent an angel down to stop him, because his arrogance was satisfied that Abraham would do whatever unspeakable thing he told him to do. Nice. Even as a young child, I thought, "Yikes, this God character must be a *real bastard* to do such a thing!" And I was right about that.

I read in the bible a story of a man who would sing to a bird while kicking a ravenous dog. The story continues with the bird picking the man up and delivering him to the ancient city of Jericho where this man divided into many men that would dig holes and throw the dirt at each other. When the holes were finished, the men jumped up, traveled to the far edges of the universe and then morphed into planets. It's in there, it's just considered to be a less important story by the church.

The secret to having the Bible less horrifying is to climb Mount Everest, eat all the pages and do squats until 4 days have past. Then the aliens would show up and give you a twig. Why is The Levite's Concubine not on this list? Long story short, it's about this Levite who goes on a visit to a man in a foreign town. The other men of the town doesn't like this, and demands to be allowed to rape the visitor. The host refuses, and allows them to rape his concubine instead. The concubine is so badly raped that she dies from exhaustion at the doorstep when she returns, and is subsequently dismembered and sent to every village in the land as a weird type of call to arms. All of the receiving villages goes to war over this, being lead and instructed by God himself, as they goes on slaughtering villages and capturing sex slaves, both against the offending town and also others, which wasn't even a part of the transgression to begin with. Game of Thrones has nothing on the bible.

We should also remember that the text we have today derives from writings dating back over 3000 years, with additions made gradually for over a thousand years (for the Old Testament, written roughly between 1200 - 165 BC); the New Testament was written in the first century AD so almost 2000 years ago. Since then it has been translated and retranslated, parts were removed, lost, or possibly even added depending on whoever had possession of the manuscript; there are different versions entirely, and different ideas of what constitutes the 'real' text; and much of it is second or third-hand accounts of dialogue or events that were written long (decades, in some instances) after the fact and from memory alone. An ancient text, comprising chapters written down by various people, all with differing opinions on what it should contain, being copied over and over again and in various languages, is most likely bound to have had some of the meaning and content changed over time. Also new discoveries have been made as recently as the last century (the Dead Sea Scrolls), and the Church vetted those texts before anyone else got to look at them and, as it always has, decided what constituted 'canon' and what was to be discarded. The institution of the Church has overseen what it considers the actual, original Bible since its founding and we would be none the wiser if some of the content has been changed or omitted over time. Also the early days of Christianity was fraught with danger and difficulty, with Christians being the target of the Roman Empire and often scapegoated for its ills, so the Biblical text was hidden and it is thought now that much of it was written in a sort of 'code' to protect it from the Romans and being destroyed. Basically, we have no way of knowing that after all this time, the text we have today is in any way original or the actual words of who is purported to have been speaking at the time. Having said that, it could equally be said that what we have today is in fact entirely unchanged from the original, but it is worth noting nonetheless the possible effect that time in human hands may have had.

You know like how the above examples are the core values of the left and the Democrat Party?* My answer: So what? *The greatest promoters of social Darwinism were from the left*, and even that *doesn't stop people from the right coming here to spew anti-religious "arguments"*. I don't know why you thought I'd be taking it easy on the left, it just shows that you must have cognitive problems thinking that being against racism "is a leftist thing". It is good to remember that both in America and in England the abolitionist movement had religious leaders from the conservative party. *But it also doesn't change the fact that the alternative right, which is as dirty as the far left, has some relevance in your country.* This ends your attempt to bring the debate into the political arena.

God allowed Satan to test Job with losing his fortune, family, and health. It wasn’t God that did those thing to Job, but because Job stayed loyal and understood that Gob has a reason for everything that happens in our lives, he was rewarded with more than he had before. That is the entire premise of the Bible. If we stay faithful to the Lord no matter what trials we face on Earth, we will be rewarded with an eternity in Heaven.

So Job's children, the ones who died, the ones God saw fit to put under Satan's power, were just more pieces of Job's patrimony, easily replaceable and interchangeable with other types of property...? So where does THAT fit with the passage which states that God cares even about the life of a humble sparrow...? The fact that you can accept such fable as part of a holy book and reconcile it with other aspects of your faith without acknowledging the contradictions goes a long way in explaining why so many dislike as a whole your religion and the many churches it has spawned.

I have read a lot of the Bible but I don't recall hearing or reading about women eating their babies. I do remember a story about King Solomon judging a case about infants. One baby died and the woman stole another woman's baby. They argued over who should have the child. Solomon said Cut the child in half. Those words showed who the true mother was. But I will have to read 2 Kings because I am surprised in all these years as a Christian I don't recall this story.
