You'll notice how every single familiar character has a different looks except for Sans, who is exactly identical. And I refuse to believe that's unintentional.

I named my character in Undertale Kris so you could imagine my surprise when the character you play as is called Kris in Deltarune.

Don’t forget Kris’ awareness to the player. Not only at the end where he removes his soul. But during the game play, whenever there is a cut scene between characters and their dialogue. When the scene is over Kris, looks at *you* the player. Similar to when sans tells his puns at the start of Undertale, he delivers the punchline looking at *you* the player.

Deltarune in a nutshell: *Choice.exe has been deleted.*

The ending song also suggests that Kris is struggling. "When the light is running low, and the shadows start to grow, and the places that you know feel like fantasy. There's a light inside your soul that's still shining in the cold, with the truth. The promise in our hearts. Don't forget: I'm with you in the dark." It's pretty clear what this is. If the "light" represents Kris's positivity, then it's being overtaken by brooding emotions. Parents are split up and mom hates dad, brother who was Kris's closest friend is now gone, he is treated like an outcast by a majority of the class and will never be the same as them physically. The storage closet literally feels like fantasy to Kris even though he's gone to that school for presumably a long time. Kris's hope is still there, but it's in the cold. He needs someone to reach out and rekindle that hope. It could be that Asriel literally is with Kris in the dark somehow. Let's not forget that these characters did have magic in Undertale. If we assume that they still can use it here, then it's possible that Asriel is attempting to project fun adventures with friends into Kris's mind, so that Kris won't feel so alone.

Sans said "I'm new in town" The Snowdin Shopkeeper claimed Sans and Papyrus "appeared out of nowhere and inserted themselves" HMMMM RELATIONS MAYBE?

I think "Kris" is the character whose body the player posesses during the events of the game. All the characters note that you are acting strangely, because Kris isn't acting the way he usually does. That's because we, as the player, are acting the way we ourselves would but in the body of Kris. Before we start the game, the vessel we create and name is supposedly intended for us to inhabit, however we are instead forced into Kris's body. You can even see before saving for the first time that there's a pre-existing save labelled "Kris" that is overwritten by the *player's name*, not the vessel's. Not only that, but this doesn't seem like the first time that Kris's body has been posessed, as that bird cage seems to have seen some use already. Kris himself is trying to break out the whole time. You can tell they're conscious and aware of what is happening during the events of the game when their body has an involuntary reaction to emotion- such as when drinking the hot chocolate and having their throat tighten. He finally manages to force his body to move while we watch, unable to wrest back control. That's because we, as the primary control of their brain, are unable to act at all due to the brain's tendency to shut off our nerves while we sleep. Or something like that. Anyway, Kris breaks free and as a special prank to us, he brandishes a knife menacingly, knowing that the souls that posess him usually dont want him to commit murder. Maybe. Kris does enjoy a good morbid jape or two, after all.

I don't think that last scene is Kris/Chara? cleansing themselves of their humanity, I interpreted that more as them cleansing themselves from... US. We can still move the heart around inside the cage. We can't control Kris anymore. Notice how many of the monsters in town say something along the lines of "You're behaving in an unusual way today, Kris"? Being unusually talkative... checking objects in rooms instead of talking to the other people like any normal person would... checking the card in Rudy's hospital room even though Kris already signed it... greeting Sans like you are old friends even though Sans and Kris dont know each other yet. Curious, huh? Almost like Kris is posessed by someone. Hmm... Posessed... Reminds me of the way those who played the Genocide route in Undertale often liked to say they were "posessed by Chara" (even though in reality they were the ones who decided to do the Genocide route to see all the endings in the first place...) I kinda have a feeling Deltarune is going to be about Kris (Chara?) VS Us, the players. However I'm not sure how Frisk would fit into that theory... (Also notice how Kris has all the letters in Frisk except for the F?) Another detail that's worth noting (though everyone is probably already aware of it by now xD) is that Deltarune goes way back. Tobyfox already at least thought about the story of Deltarune before Undertale even came out, afaik, which is why we can find all these clues referencing Deltarune in Undertale. For example Suzie is referenced in Undertale by a npc... and then there's Sans' workshop with the photo... God, it's all so mysterious!

One thing worth to mention is that the Dark World was likely real, well... sorta of real. I personally think that The Dark World is not only a product of Kris imagination but also his soul. Human souls in the Undertale universe are shown to be extremely powerful, able to manipulate even reality itself, the Dark World likely already existed on Kris head, but his Soul brought it to reality once he and Susie entered the closet.

Chara at the end of the genocide route: "Let's move on from this pointless world, and *move on to the next."* FINALLY! I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO NOTICED THIS!!!!

If I'm not mistaken, Deltarune Chapter 1 was more of a demo than anything else, I don't think the surprise ending was much more than just Toby giving the fans something to speculate about. I wouldn't be surprised if that's really all there is to it. Even if not, I think the soul that the human rips out of their body represents us players. We did after all create a 'vessel' (a container) at the beginning of the game, only for the game to throw it out and give us this human instead. On top of that, you can actually (meekly) move around as the caged soul at the end, suggesting that, when separated, we are in control of the soul, but not the human. On top of that, there are several lines of dialogue from Kris' friends and family that suggest Kris is acting differently today from normal. I think looking at all of that together, it seems that the player, as a soul, was just thrust into an unwilling human's body for the length of one playthrough. That's just my idea, though. It doesn't account for why the cage is notably worn out, as if this is something that happens often.

There is absolutely no way that the "Dark World = Just Make Believe" theory can hold water. The relationship between Kris and Susie starts out with her having a ten-foot thick personal shield under the guise of being a tough aloof bully. The chances of the bully sitting down with the weird kid she picks on and playing pretend with some cards and chess pieces are slim to none. It's only through the adventure itself, the shared experience of personal growth, that she lets herself soften enough to bond with Kris. Without such a bond, there's absolutely zero chance she'd indulge in childish make-believe play with a near-stranger she threatened to eat the face of just minutes prior. Just wouldn't happen.

Toby never said the games have "absolutely nothing to do with each other." He was pretty particular with his wording, and was simply saying our Undertale saves are safe from Deltarune. Great vid and theory, though! I've been thinking much the same, and I'm glad to see it spread. :p

My theory, though an uncommon one, is that we're the dark breaking the balance of light. The reason why we're not the one in control in DeltaRune is because it's not *_our_* story. When our choice is first shown to not matter, our soul is thrust into the body of Kris, thus taking over. At the end, Kris responds to this by taking advantage of the lack of control players normally have in cutscenes within game as a whole.

good theory, however my only prob is that raslei can still be the prince from the dark. He states that he is a prince. Now lancers is the prince you're saying, but remember there were 4 kings before all the problems started in the dark world. I don't think this is 100% confirmed but it is possible that ralsei is the prince of hearts as he has a heart on his cloak thing. This could make sense as we have lancer: spade prince, clover: club princess? (They do live in the castle with lancer so possible), ralsei: heart prince. Sadly we never saw a possible canadint for diamonds so that's hurdle to get over.

I honestly don't believe that Kris is Chara, that seems far too clear and obvious to me. I believe that Kris has problems himself, or some sort of split personality.

Deltarune heavily reminded me of Wonderland. Right down to many of the enemies being playing cards

In my mind, the argument of the Darkners being abandoned and this "Knight" giving new purpose is a way of this Knight manipulating their misunderstanding. In reality, we can't play with toys forever. Our needs are more dire, and we must ultimately care for ourselves (in this case, implying that the Lightner world is the games real world directly) To trade off reality for imagination is to disregard natural structure. A disregard that could well "crack the earth". The imagination is fleeting and cannot be tended to forever. The truth is that the world's of reality and fiction are that of the relationship of a gun and holster. One can live without the other.

My theory is that "You" are not "Kris"... There are three parties at play in a single body here - First is "Kris", the red soul and original owner of the body. Second is "You", the player. Third is "Chara", the evil entity that talks to "You" in the intro. "You" and "Chara" are somehow working in conjunction to possess Kris' body. This would explain why other characters in the over-world keep mentioning how you're acting differently than usual. For example, in the hospital the receptionist notes that you're not playing the piano as well as you normally can. That's because it's "Kris" who knows how to play the piano, not "You". Sans has some ridiculous level of perceptiveness, so he's probably the only one who suspects he's speaking directly to "You", instead of "Kris". Going into super-duper stretch mode: "Kris" is just an anagram of"Frisk" without the F (Freedom). And what about those seven colored flowers in Asgor's shop? He mentions that they're hard to keep alive in this 'climate'... what do we know about the climate? That it lacks 'freedom', aka 'determination'. They may be flowers from a place that had 'determination'... maybe even the world of Undertale. PS: Why was Susie so shocked when Ralsei revealed his face? Maybe because Susie is actually Asriel? She has a snout ala Asriel and keeps her hair down over her face. Asriel is also conveniently missing from town and we don't know where Susie lives. Fun to consider, at least.

"Your decisions don't matter.." Sometimes when either Susie or a character gives you a choice and than cuts off and you don't get to choose? We are not controlling Kris apparently..and I guess Chara and frisk moved onto the next? But remember the relation of the two so called Tales. The magical closet land and magical under land! If you speed up another HIM you hear darker yet darker a bit. So gaster is apart of this game in multiple ways! So..yeah..in chapter 2 we'll find out!

But.... *_WHO IS SINGING THE CREDITS THEME?_* My Theory: _When the light is running low, and the shadows start to grow_ = darker yet darker/entry no.17 *GASP*

Throughout deltarune we keep hearing about how the Dark World used to be. There were 4 kings instead of one, Darkners and Lightners lived in harmony, etc. Two events changed the Dark World into what we see in deltarune, the Lightners leaving the Darkners and the King of Spades being influenced by a Knight. We keep hearing things about a Knight being the one who told the King of Spades to overthrow the other three kings, the Knight being the one who suggested the King make another Dark Fountain, and the Knight suggested the King of Spades overthrow the Light World. Who is the Knight and why would they want to destroy the Light World? If the prophecy at the beginning of the game is to believed, upsetting the balanced of Light and Dark will cause the Earth to "take it's final breath" as well as the sky going black and the Earth breaking open. Not good for anyone involved. Chara doesn't seem to have attachment to the *world* of Undertale. Wanting to "Erase this *world* and move onto the next". If Kris is Chara like you've suggested in this video, then it makes the fact that when Kris enters the Dark World decorated in armour very interesting. If you know anything about medieval fantasy video games like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Dark Souls, etc. Knights are characterized as wearing mail armour, the same kind Kris is wearing. This makes me think Chara might be the Knight described in deltarune. deltarune's Dark World is most certainly based on medieval fantasy, with it's Kings, royal magician, jester, prince, Kingdom, castles, Knight, and Rouxls Kaard speaks very much like people from the middle ages are characterized in movies and video games. Not to mention the very Final Fantasy/Crono Trigger/Legend of Zelda inspired sound track. The game oozes elements of medieval fantasy, even the whole dungeons and dragons role playing theory fits perfectly because dungeons and dragons is medieval fantasy. I feel like too many people dismissed the events that happen in the Dark World as not important, or the Prophecy as not important. Like it's just a toy world with no bearing on the real one, but I strongly believe the Dark World is important. If Chara and Sans are in this game and they're still self aware, then Asriel might be too. Not deltarune's Asriel, Undertale's self aware, Flowey Asriel. Asriel might be working against Chara. It's also funny how the Delta Rune symbol, the circle with wings over the three triangles reminds me of Asriel and Chara. Asriel having wings when in his "God of Hyper Death" form and the three triangles kind of looking like Chara's creepy face, but that's a pretty big reach though. I believe there's a lot of important information we can gleam from our time in the Dark World. Like how we learn Ralsei acts a lot like Toriel, and can even bake cake. Ralsei's mom must have taught him how to bake or something. *EDIT: I mistakenly thought the King of Spades wanted to destroy the Light World, I double checked and he just wants to over throw the Light World. It's also not directly stated the Knight suggested the Darkners overthrow the Light World, the King of Spades may have come up with that idea on his own. In my opinion it seems likely the Knight put the idea in the King's head, though I have no actual evidence that suggests if it was the King's idea or the Knight's idea. If anyone can find something in the game that implies one of the two possibility I'd be grateful if you share it with me.

Holy crap! This is honestly the best DeltaRune theory that I've seen on youtube! I want to add some of my own thoughts so here you go. Another popular theory is that Kris is being taking over by the player. When you first save you overrite Kris's name and on the surface characters say Kris is acting strange. Blag blah blah, now you've probably heard all this already but something you probably haven't heard actually comes from Undertale. In the second phase of Sans's fight he says "I all ways thought the anomaly was doing this because it was unhappy and when it got what it wanted it would stop all this" Well, Sans seems to think this anomaly is causing the genocide run and Chara accuses us as the player of being the cause of the genocide run so what if this anomaly and the player are one and the same?

Remember the whole abortion thing with monster and humans was never done before Chara and Asriel, so neither knew what would happen (debunking the popular "Chara tried to trick Asriel to kill all of humanity" theory). Not to mention Kris described personality before the events of deltarune are mischievous, and shy. In the true lab tapes and true pacifist expansion of the opening cutscene, these traits are re/first established. Also, 16:05 Easily? They do nothing until the player/frisk goes out of their way to get the highest level in the game? How is that easily rewriting actions? The more accurate phrase is "in the right situation, they are able to override the player's choices". Not to mention, the Chara in the genocide ending is a determination, reactivated version of their living counterpart. Who else is a reactivated version of their living self? Flowey. And we can CLEARLY see how close he is to Asriel's personality. And as a side point, though not really6 touched on in this video, I see a lot of people using the red eye's of Kris and the knife in the ending as a key point for the Kris Chara/genocide connection. Chara is never once depicted holding a knife that's actually sharp or dangerous. The only knife they canonically owned was for cutting plants. And maybe suicidal reasons based on some of Asriel's extra dialogue from his easter egg in the true pacifist ending. And the red eyes thing could be referencing the one-off really specific ending where Chara possesses(?) Frisk. I find it weird that a lot of fan art depicts Chara with a sharp knife and red glowing eyes, but that's getting off topic. Not to mention light's the good thing in deltarune. Not the bad thing like you claim. YOU KRIS are a lightner, stopping the corrupted chaos king, a DARKNER from destroying both worlds. And that soul which Chara is 'cleansing their humanity of', is controlled by the player, it can move based on your inputs, implying you control it. Implying that this entire game has been out of Kris and Chara's hands. The last third of this theory feels vastly oversimplified and somewhat hypocritical, your problem with it being a metaphor was that you couldn't get why Toby would make a story like it. But you never explain why a developer whose previous game was built on a running mechanic (the morality and exp 'counter') that allowed anyone to change for the better and even worse. So a good vs evil war story doesn't accurately Undertale or even deltatune's concept of neither being a viloent killer or pacifist is the right answer. Almost all of the video before the ~14:30 mark makes a lot of scenes and could be built into a solid theory, but the last 1/3 breaks a lot of it.

People talk about Chara, but isn't it supposed to be a direct reference to the player, because in Undertale you name the Fallen Human making the character "us"? I understood that "Chara" is the dark side inside the player behind the screen, who is used to going in killing sprees in other games without a second thought. I think what "Chara" said in the genocide ending, that we should "move on to the next world" also means other video game worlds, not just alternate Undertale timelines. This has bugged me since Undertale came out when watching theory videos and reading the comments. Unless someone can tell me I'm incorrect or missing something?

I liked your video and your theory, but I have a few questions. 1 If this world is created by Chara, how is Gaster releated to it? 2 What would be the meaning of Jevil's message that he leaves you when you defeat him by attacking him (about the raise of a Queen)? 3 What would explain Jevil's madness in this world?

I've got a question no one seems to be answering, so I thought I'd put it out there. What about Lancer? He seems really dynamic and is very integral to the story/prophecy for just some DnD style npc Kris made up. I Also don't think Toby would put that much work into a character that wouldn't play at least a mildly significant role moving forward (and just be some imaginary thing for the 1st chapter). What do you think his purpose is? Do you he is completely made up? I have a feeling that he might be related to Sans in some way which is why Sans has what could be the "Thrash Your Own A$$" blueprint in his secret shed, the drawing of the 3 people (Ralsei -or maybe Lancer-, Kris, and Susie from their first adventure), and also the relation he has with the darkner door portal. I really hope someone does some looking into this!

What if Undertale is just like a pilot episode that turned out well and deltarune is the original idea Toby had. That would explain everything(same characters, similar plot, etc) without overthinking lol I really hope those game are not related at all beside some cool/funny references and easter eggs, that way we could enjoy both games by themselves, without any conspiration theory behind.

The theory of it being a dream doesn't really work when you consider the dialogue and events of the snowgrave route. What happens in that world carries over to the 'real' world

Fun fact: in Deltarune, if you put in the creator of the vessel (your name) if you put in Gaster, it’s the same affect as in undertale. It plays the story again. (So I ended up typing Sans as the creator name)

I have a feeling the "vessel" we created will soon be housing that soul if this theory is pretty accurate. Signs point to it since all our choices were saved and there are hidden text files of someone calling out in the dark. Perhaps Kris( or Chara) will turn out to be the true villain of this game. I dig the idea anyway. I get tired of Chara being painted in the "victim" light.

Funfact:ralsei is the prince of the dark. Like look at his first appearance he looks like the last one and he even stated himself he is he is the prince of this area which is called "the kingdom of -nightmarefuel- darkness" when you first fell in in the darkworld with SUSie

I believe when kris throws the soul into the cage, it's a symbol for removing the control of the player, similar to how Chara removes the players way of choosing

You're right to not believe everything Toby says DIRECTLY. He's been wrong about his own creations before...which kind of doesn't make any sense... 2:01-Yes i agree that it's a rearrangement of UNDERTALE. I think the world does have something to do with Gaster though.

Maybe this is the world/timeline Sans wanted to go back to. Maybe Sans is actually "controlling" the game, seeing as the fast travel door is literally his door for example, also, he looks exactly like himself from Undertale, which just strengthens this theory
