Never saw an elephant painting before but I once saw an elephant being painted on. It was having henna / mendhi applied to it and it seemed to enjoy the pampering and attention. It was the personal elephant of a gentleman that would use it for transportation. They were obviously good friends. The gentleman also owned two camels which he would rent out. The camels were also very smart. These camels could be rented for one-way trips around town and when you would reach your destination you would simply get off the camel (the camel would let you down) then you would pat it on its rump and it would leave. But it would know its way back to its owner. Now, here's where it gets interesting. These camels were so well trained that they knew to watch out for traffic and look both ways before crossing any street, but wait for it: They also knew to obey street lights!! They would slow down at a yellow light, stop at a red light, and go on a green light. So these camels would navigate the streets along side cars even in congested traffic. They were so smart!! And the way that these camels and the elephant got along and were kind and gentle to people never gave me the impression that they were ever mistreated. Yes they were working animals but they also seemed to appreciate people and themselves and company. People would say hi to them and they would occasionally pause to acknowledge people they knew along the way. You could see it in their eyes that they were social. We should never underestimate these precious conscious beings.

@@a.i.journey I have no idea about the treatment of these elephants. My issue is that they are being presented as having real artistic skill, when in fact they are really performing tricks prompted by the trainers. You show insight Paul and you are correct. There seems to be a current of negativity which has been caused by two or three blog posts with elephants being abused in some totally unrelated scenario. Aquilona 16 No. It is their known cultural tradition. It is only just now in the earliest stages of slowly changing one by one. And that means and is KNOWN, that everyone in the culture for thousands of years has committed PHAJAAN and BULLHOOK violence. That is what the BULLHOOK is all about. PHAJAAN, Torture "training" of captive elephants is fully standard, WHICH KILLS HALF OF ALL CAPTIVE ASIAN ELEPHANT BABIES, and not only to calves, they do it again to the elephant every single time it is sold to someone new. I suggest you educate yourself rather than trying to stop those who are working to stop the violence. HEAR ME, I WILL NEVER BE SILENT ABOUT WHAT IS DONE TO ELEPHANTS. ELEPHANTS ARE ENDANGERED BECAUSE OF MAN KILLING THEM, AND WILL VERY SOON BECOME EXTINCT IF MAN DOES NOT STOP THE VIOLENCE AGAINST ELEPHANTS. I will not hush.

The majority of these comments are sickening. Throwing around random accusations. What do you know about this man and his involvement with animals? Some of you guys are just as bad as the people who ACTUALLY do abuse living beings. It's sick. So quick to judge. Yet you know nothing, and don't care to. He's arguing over whether the people that trained that particular elephant(in the video) have abused him or not. Not to mention he's getting attacked because that CA catr chick is flaming the hell out of him for abusing the elephant in the video that HE filmed. I don't know about you guys, but if their were baseless accusations like that floating around then I would OBVIOUSLY defend myself. No shit some disgusting human beings abuse elephants. Just like how some humans abuse canines, felines, animals in general, and even our own kind. That doesn't mean that every damn elephant that paints was abused/tortured into doing it. Think with your brain for once, not your damn feelings. Think using logic. Stop being so quick to jump on the 'abuse train', and start thinking with your head.

There is a lot of hype going around that elephants are being tortured and forced to paint with the threat of extreme pain if they don't. This is untrue. It's done primarily to get engagement on their blogs and link juice from ranking websites. I am involved with elephants frequently and non of the things mentioned are done at the place where I go. Look, I don't know how cruel this particular camp is, or not. But, if you actually believe that the elephants WANT to paint, then you're amazingly gullible. This is a parlor trick. The elephant doesn't have any clue what it's going to paint. The mahout/trainer is the real painter. The elephant is trained to be a large living remote controlled arm, and the mahout uses the elephant's ear as an input joystick to guide the elephant's trunk in the direction the mahout/trainer wants. This is why you will find elephants writing words in any language (that a buyer will pay for). This particular camp appears to be smart enough now to remote all videos of elephants writing words. But, if you look around, you'll find plenty of videos out there showing how the trick is done. Sorry, but an elephant has no idea what a "Ford Fiesta" is (a video you will easily find on RU-vid of an elephant writing words). An elephant has no idea who the royal couple is, and why they got married (a video showing the elephant painting a picture of the royal couple at the alter getting married). An elephant has no idea who "Sean" is, and what a birthday is (a video showing the elephant painting words, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY SEAN" onto the canvas). This is a parlor trick. And, if you think the elephants paint for enjoyment, well, instead of giving the tourist trap some money for these fake paintings, how about buying some oceanfront land from me instead? It's in Kansas. I'll pay the elephant camp to paint "BUY MY LAND" onto the canvas to prove it's real.

Having taken a brief break to read up on this now I know it's Training not art. I still believe the elephant is intelligent and has great dexterity. But they paint the same painting over and over at each place in southern Asia they, (drawing elephants), are kept. So, sadly, it is fake because the trainer tugs the elephant ear in a particular manner for a type of painting stroke. I really wanted elephants to be creating art! But they are still as intelligent as dolphins and show emotions we understand. So keep your healthy respect and awe.
@Chandra_Moon13

Even learning to paint and draw is training. That's true for every skill. I was not born with the talent to draw, but I had to be trained. It takes repetition and an instructor to oversee it. For years I only knew how to draw one picture because it was taught very simply to me in kindergarten. The very fact that these elephants can be trained in this is remarkable. Tugging at his ear is how the trainer communicates with the elephant. I don't think anyone expects that an elephant would be born on the Sahara with the knowledge of how to pick up a paint brush and go at a canvas. They have to be taught what it is, how to use it, how to paint, and which shapes to paint for that day. Hence, the tugging is not manipulation unless all forms of instruction and training is some form of manipulation.

@@Chandra_Moon13 It's a trick in the same way circus elephants are taught to "Dance". They don't see this as performance or art, anymore than if they had been trained to shift logs from one spot to another. They have no concept of what they are doing or why. There is no evolutionary advantage to elephants making human art. So they don't. Elephants are intelligent, but to use human IQ or artistic talent as a measure does them a disservice. Wanting them to be more like us is arrogant, & ultimately harmful. If we can read positive human attributes into animal behaviour, it's easy to slip into bestowing evil traits on them too when they are merely behaving naturally.
@rockethead7
@rockethead7 4 года назад
@@Chandra_Moon13 Helena, it has been explained to you that the elephant is trained to steer the paintbrush in the direction that the trainer pulls the ear, and that's how this trick is done. Why in the world would you compare that to humans learning to paint? Humans know what they are painting. Elephants do not. The elephant is trained to be a giant living remote control arm for the mahout/trainer, who is the real artist. The fact that you'd compare a mechanical motion in an elephant to an actual human who creates a painting is an insult to humans, and falsely boosts the status of the elephants. Don't get me wrong. Elephants are remarkable creatures. But, painters, they are not. If you open Microsoft Paint with your computer, and use the computer's mouse to draw a simple sketch, do you attribute artistic skill to the computer mouse? Or, is the mouse merely the mechanical device that puts the marks on the screen where you directed it to go? Well, the elephant in this video is a glorified computer mouse, merely moving the paintbrush where the mahout steers the elephant's ear. You may marvel at that level of training, and that's fine. But, for the sake of humanity, do not degrade our human artistic capabilities just because some tourist spot in Thailand is selling "elephant paintings" via this video.

The elephants are conditioned to do this via abuse, physical and/ or psychological. They do not voluntarily walk up and do this: - there is a handler next to them sticking their ears with nails or some other pain causing inducement so they keep painting; - they are chained to the spot; and - if they do not cooperate and paint they are not fed. In a nutshell, the elephants are tortured juveniles separated from their mothers at 2 years old (same as a human toddler developmentally) and endure years of physical and psychological conditioning to create the same series of lines and shapes each time.
@rockethead7
@rockethead7 4 года назад
Are you asking how the trick is done? It's done by training the elephant to move the trunk and paintbrush in the direction that the mahout/trainer pulls the elephant's ear. They never show the opposite side of the elephant, otherwise you'd you'd see the trick. No, the elephant doesn't know what it's painting. These "paintings" are sold to gullible buyers who think these elephants are artists. And, this video is carefully constructed to pretend the trick is "real," because the poster of the video is the one making money when these "paintings" are purchased.

I have two dogs that are both trained to sit, lay down, attack, heel, stand down, retrieve, and speak and we didn't beat them. Why do people always assume that when an animal does a trick especially large animals like elephants are tortured? I won't deny it happened in the past. And I won't deny there are probably still some places that do this. But it doesn't mean that it happens in every sanctuary and the owner of this video already commented many times that in THIS sanctuary and in most they aren't tortured. If a dog sits when its owner tells him to sit, do you also automatically assume it gets tortured? Some are being tortured, most aren't, most are being taught to sit by first saying sit, then gently pushing the bum down until the dog sits and then rewarding with a snack the dog likes. I learned my guinea pigs to turn in around in a circle every time I whistle. And I haven't raised my hand against them once. I just guided them a few times with gently pushing them to turn around (gently, not forcefully) every time I whistle and then give vegetables until they understand what I expected them to do. So now every time I whistle they turn around and expect veggies (and when I don't give it they will torture me by screaming until they get the veggies). This kind of learning tricks by rewarding them for doing what you want them to do works for every animal, whether small like a hamster doing a tiny hamster parcour, a dog catching a villain trying to run and bite when the villain is moving and let go if the villain stops moving, a rat sniffing out drugs in the airport, a horse bowing or an elephant painting. You don't need torture to train any animal. Patience love and reward also do the trick. I don't say that it doesn't happen at all that elephants are being tortured. But it doesn't happen in every sanctuary. It's like saying all horses, dogs, rodents and other animals being trained to obey are abused. And if you think that training any creature to obey even if done with love and rewards is a form of abuse in itself then I surely hope you don't have children because raising a child is exactly the same, you are training the child to behave properly and well mannered, to learn how to read, write, calculate, etc. And most parents do this with love. And those who abuse are often at some point revealed and punished for what they have done. The world isn't the same as before 1990. Those crazy enough to abuse animals will get exposed a lot more easy nowadays and they will get punished for it. It stimulates people to know more about the animal they are dealing with and if they want to keep them make sure it has a good life (and consider if it is an animal you can keep, in the last century people kept cheetahs as pets, creatures that need to be able to run free and aren't suitable to keep in a house, nowadays people know better than that and if they want a cat buy a domesticated one) and if they want to train them use reward systems. Our own knowledge has increased and those who abuse get more easily exposed.

lv1309: Well, that's quite a lot of nonsense you just wrote. And, I'll tell you why. It's not because I'm saying that these elephants are tortured. There'd be no way for me to confirm or deny that. But, the major difference between the guy who runs this elephant camp, and your examples of people training their pets, is that nobody is deceptive about training their pets. People who talk about training their pets aren't making claims that their pets are artists, and selling you "paintings" made by their pets. Yet, that's what this elephant camp owner is doing. He's deceptive. He posted this video called "the truth about elephant paintings," but avoids telling the truth about elephant paintings. He sells the "paintings" made by the elephants, but doesn't tell you that it's all a parlor trick. The elephants don't know what they're painting. The mahout/trainer is on the other side of the elephant, holding the elephant's ear, guiding the paintbrush by using the elephant as a giant living remote control arm. Pull down on the ear, and the elephant paints down. Pull left, and the elephant paints left. Over years of training, this control is very precise, and it makes it appear that elephants are the artists. They're not. The artist is the mahout/trainer. The elephant just moves the trunk in the direction that the ear is pulled. And, if the gullible public knew the ACTUAL truth about elephant paintings, that the elephant doesn't know what it's painting, then there's no way in the world that he can sell this "art" for the amount of money he's selling it for. So, seriously, spare the world your ridiculous analogies to people training their pets or children. This is nothing like that. This video titled "the truth about elephant paintings" avoids telling you the most important truth of all. These "elephant paintings" are designed to separate your money from your pocketbook, by making you believe elephants are artists, and making you want to buy a "painting." That's the real truth about elephant paintings.

Go to one of these parks. Talk to the owners. Talk to the mahouts. Get close up and touch one of these majestic creatures. See how they are actually treated instead of thinking you know how they are treated. You might be pleasantly surprised to realize that you were wrong or furious at those who led you to believe this abuse story!

Bull crap. They are tortured to learn to do this, have a stick jammed in their sensitive trunk to "paint" and would never voluntarily do this if they were not conditioned to do this with, at best, threats of loss of food, and torture/ punishment for refusing at the worst.

@@laceymorris928 Wrong. The elephant is trained to direct the paintbrush in the direction that the mahout pulls the ear. They never show the other side of the elephant, of course, which would give away how the trick is done. I didn't see any information on why the elephants paint. I didn't see the man standing behind the elephant. What was he doing? How was he making the elephant paint? How was the elephants trained to paint to begin with? The video is cropped so we can't actually see what is happening. And nothing you said had anything to do with it.

This video is the first video in a video series. Did you watch the other episodes? It will answer all the questions you ask here and more. One of the reasons that the elephants paint is to help provide funds which support an elephant clinic with full time veterinarian who provides medical treatment to all elephants throughout the area free of charge.

Animals like pigs and cows are surprisingly intelligent and social, they understand nuance and are very sensitive emotionally, especially about what happens to their family. But we routinely destroy all the natural family ties and bonds, ending their lives horrendously. Babies bred only to die, how would we feel? We do this because we are *conditioned* to think that these and all animals are for food. They are not. Yes,, we have eaten them much, but we are evolving and it's time to know and understand better now. We *can* and *should* break this conditioning now. It a gross shame to continue to eat animals for what amounts, in this day and age, to our culinary entertainment and belief systems. Break away, be better, be different. Try different things, baked tofu, fishn filets, all kinds of alternatives, find something you like, and be a voice and make choices for the innocent. Do it....no excuses... because do you love these beings.... innocent beings... or not?

Hunter gatherers get 80% of their calories from meat. Thats how everybody got their calories until 5000 years ago. It is time to change our relationship with animals and not eat them anymore. It is also in our own interest. 1. We are destroying the oceans ecosystems with fishing. 2. The methane and carbondioxide from farmanimals add to the greenhouse effect. 3. Livestock causes erosion of the soil 4. and is inefficient use of land that could be better used for agriculture and nature. 5. Intensive livestock practices cause a lot of waste from breakdown of manure. 6. Livestock poses a risk of epedemics for humans. By use antibiotics on livestock a strain of bacteria or virusses can mutate and become immune. Livestock deceases can jump species. 7. etc.

If you don't eat meat then the meat gets wasted meaning an animal died for nothing. Not eating meat all together could be unhealthy and unappetizing to some people. Treating animals better would cost more meaning less meat again meaning people would take it into their own hands to raise the animals such as class and pigs themselves. This would result in more animal mistreatment than before.

amanda Alright. I’ll give you that point. If I may say though, the elephant is visibly well. Doesn’t look to be starved. In pretty fine condition. There isn’t any cuts or pokes (that we can see). Do you have any other points that these elephants are actually abused? Some other elephants may be in another place, but this elephant in particular looks great. A lot of people in the comments are just following what other people said and aren’t thinking for themselves. I don’t know what else that stick could be for but how would you even use it? If they elephant messes up you poke it? Well how’s the elephant supposed to know where to go? Seems like a hard thing to do. You could be right, but these are just my points. Any other valid statements you have?

If you’re so concerned about the welfare of this elephant, why don’t you buy it and take care of it? We all know that if this elephant is released back into the wild, it will be killed by poachers. So put your money where your mouth is and let’s see how good you are at actually protecting elephants.
