I had the opposite. After struggling to complete my studies at uni (because I was an apprentice chef in high school) and having a horrible GPA my uni wouldn’t send my CV to industry partners because I wasn’t a good look for the uni. I then later found out that after 4 years of studying I had undiagnosed ADHD. Long story short I found a engineering job in control systems. I’m literally programming critical infrastructure for my country and making meaningful progress for my country. If you don’t have grit you won’t achieve your dreams.

The truth is this: engineering is just like any other job. You either are lucky and you love it, or you are unlucky and you hate it. The working environment is the most important part, just like any other job. When it comes to work, you have to be content with pursuing happiness at all cost. You spend a lot of time at work. Nothing is worth sacrificing you health for. Dont work overtime unless you absolutely have to. Dont stay with a specific job just because its secure. Nothing is more secure than happiness. If you have to leave engineering for happiness, then do it. Not every engineering job is the same, that is true for every industry. Dont put all your eggs in one basket. People make the common mistake in engineering that they can just put EVERYTHING into it and it will be rewarding. No kiddo. That's not how the world works. Be prepared for disappointment.

@@Tururu134 you dont know what it is like to work in a field until you actually do it. There are still many obstacles for females in engineering. I had presumed we are much further in the mindset of equality. I had to fight mysogonistic remarks on every job I had. You get tired of hearing that, besides there are jobs you wont even get just because youre not a man. On paper there is equality, in reality there is not. Even when we dissregard the issue of gender, there are other things like engineers not being paid for overtime, or working 10+ hours and weekends, that is not what I expected..At least that is the case in my country, engineers are overworked and underpaid and it is just not worth it. There are loopholes the employers use to give you less money as salary and more as travel expenses, so when you go to the bank to get a loan for a car or an apartment, the bank tells you that based on your salary you dont have enough money to pay of the loan. Eventhough in reality you can pay that loan, your credit on paper is bad. So if I cant get a car or an apartment with the money I make, then I see no point in pursuing that career.

Personally I think the biggest problem is the money engineering/computer science can earn. Starting salaries usually average upwards of 75k which is often enough for people to study that in school despite not caring or enjoying it in school. When money is the only reason you followed a certain direction then of course you won’t enjoy your job.

He left one for another, got laid off, and found another job. His 2nd job he was making 130k starting. The field of engineering is uncertain. I’m not telling you whether or not to be an engineer cuz no one knows how the job market is going to be in the future. That said, if you work for a company that supplies the US Gov, your job is pretty safe. I’m majoring in welding engineering at Ohio State and the classes are hard, but doable. I had a passion for both STEM and Law. I kind of wish I would’ve pursued a career as a lawyer, but if I was a pre law major I would think the same about engineering. I hope you find this helpful and wish you the best of luck on whatever you may pursue. I encourage you to go in undecided in the college of engineering in college, or just undecided as a whole. My first job after graduation wasn’t very bad. I was designing relay protection and automation for national grid company’s substations. I learned a lot - how to understand and design electrical principle schemes, national and international electrical standards, equipment etc. but the most important skill I learned was communication. It will help you, communicate lot! And be resourceful! But I always wanted to work as a field engineer - repairing electrical equipment, testing relay protection, troubleshooting in secondary circuits, analyzing faults and investigating them, applying lessons learned. And finally after almost 6 years I could get my dream job in an international company. All in one and even more. Theoretical knowledge helped me a lot - I was the best in written exam, which included all main chapters of power electrical engineering.And it feels great. Just don’t give up, invest into yourselves, and communicate a lot!

My uncle is a IT manager for a small assurance firm and he earns almost 80k (Germany), working 36 hours a week, 24 days a year of vacation and little responsibility in his job. He says it's so boring that no one can realistically compete in terms of will to put the hours and experience acquired, so he faces no competition and earns more than many engineers :D Also many times he has nothing to do in his job so he reads, watches yt videos and so forth, while an engineer would be stressed by the strict schedules of an engineering jobs. Hey man, I really love your videos! The information and presentation are top tier. Your general perspectives are also very valuable, which is why I would like your overall opinion on my situation (just a quick summary): I'm about to be 27 with some college credits (mainly gen ed). I've recently joined the Army Reserve as an avionic mechanic, I will: - Perform maintenance checks on aircraft flight controls, stabilization systems, avionics and controlled cryptographic equipment - Maintain common/special tools and equipment - Troubleshoot equipment and diagnose repairs - Maintain shop and bench stock for aircraft avionics equipment Some of the skills I’ll learn are: - Restoring avionic systems and subsystems - Basic electronics theory - Common soldering and systems-installation practices I'm interested in aerospace engineering and will be finishing my degree in the near future. What kind of engineering degree do you think would be the most valuable (purely from an academic/potential candidate view point) to a company like LOCKHEED MARTIN or Raytheon Company, while taking into consideration the experience from the military? In your opinion, should I go deeper into the mechanical side, or supplement my mechanical experience with an EE degree or something else? It also feels really late in my life to just now be starting down the engineering career path, but hopefully having a military background and hands on experience will help mitigate the impact of the time I've wasted. This is an open forum! All comments/opinions are welcome!

Engineering in is a good career choice, however that very heavily depends on your branch of engineering. The only branches that have an abundance of job openings are technology related branches like electrical and computer engineering and computer science and maybe career options in the construction industry. More “sciency” engineering branches like chemical, materials, biomedical, mechanical, aerospace engineering tend to have much fewer job openings. Not to say those majors are bad, but most likely you won’t be able to find a position within your field.

The main issue I've found with different engineering jobs is that when you're good at your job and go above and beyond for the company like the example he gave, you end up costing people their jobs. You want to do great work and contribute, save the company money thats a great way for them to take notice and you might get a raise. But that process that was made more efficient, yea the reason it cost the company so much is because the job of three people you just removed with a single code. It's sometimes hard to not feel like the bad guy, sometimes it's fine because you realize some of the people knew there job was pointless but were freeloading.

@erickorn5691

Theres some truth to this, and the reality is that engineering is extremely diverse such that many engineers may not be in agreement as to whether it sucks or not. Pay and opportunity are also extremely varied, but are definitely not what they advertise to engineering students. I've been an engineer for 12 years, and half of that was making crap money while learning the ropes; other fields can simply make great money on day 1 without pay being tied to experience. In my opinion engineering as a whole pretty much eats up all of your youthful potential, forces you to be a workaholic to someone elses benefit, and when you're tired of being a workaholic it just spits you out. In my field id probably say that new EIT's last between 3-5 years before they realize that engineering isnt for them and leave the industry or go into sales. For people who last beyond that and with a job change, finally a decent paycheck is made and as the years go on you have quite a bit of negotiating power since experienced engineers with PEs are a rarity. Once you get to 10 years you are pretty much forced into project management, mentorship, and budgeting whether you want it or not. At this time you start understanding the upper level corporate structure and politics that you've been shielded from and you realize you'll never just be an engineer anymore just focusing on your designs. Two years of management and corporate nonsense has been two years too many and I am leaving the profession for good - friday is my last day! I would recommend engineering school because of the rigor but not recommend anybody actually work as an engineer. They get you on salary from day one, and they work you hard and for much more than 40 hours a week till you eventually drop. It is definitely not a lifetime career if you are realistic about your personal goals or family rather than compromising because of the pay or perks. Those deadlines will never go away, and neither will those uncompensated long nights and weekends to meet those deadlines. They could care a less about you or your family and would much rather you have your hair go grey and fall out to meet a deadline rather than allow you to spend time with your family after a long day of work. Also, meeting a deadline is just expected (regardless of how unrealistic) rather than some sort of accomplishment and there are 4-5 more waiting on you once you finish. The work never ends and always goes home with you! And for those that think that hard work is going to get you a partner slot, so you should be working 12 hour days and weekends, think again because its really an odds game on the age of the person leaving and how your time, grade, and likability lines up with that opportunity that isnt to your favor.The only way I would recommend engineering is being a self employed contractor to a firm on your own terms rather than a regular full time employee. If I were to stay that is what I would do, but again the deadlines remain whether you are an employee or not and im just too tired and too old for deadlines moving forward. Choose wisely because I certainly wish I could get my time back.

Not all engineering jobs are cutting-edge or exciting or highly-paid, e.g. many exciting R&D jobs only exist in very few locations in the world, and many places do not have a strong engineering-based economy (e.g. London/NYC are heavily based on finance/banking). Know your skills, but also know if your skills are really needed by any industry, or whether such industries really exist in your region/country. After all, engineering is not just about how smart/skilled/hardworking you are. It is a matter of supply and demand.

I would say that much of a job is what you make of it. I enjoy my job a lot, but I also spend my free time learning even more to move towards a position I’d be even more passionate about. The fact that they pay you what they pay you to be an engineer opens up so many doors, I came from doing physical labor up until I graduated college so to be able to get paid to learn about engineering now that I am an electrical engineer is a dream come true in itself. People need to look at what they have more positively.

I would just have liked to have heard much more accent on the importance of engineering management, such as described in the PMbok manual and system engineering books. Actually a bit of back ground in general management would also make a great contribution, because the engineer will have to function in this environment, whether he is self employed, or works for a company. A lack of this back ground could make his experience of engineering unpleasant. As a last comment, engineering is 95 % paper work.

I always wanted to be an engineer for as long as I can remember. I am 35 now. And yes, I am an engineer. Arguably one of the finest in my domain. There were times when the job wasn't as rewarding but that was only 10% of my overall experience. For the most part, I have been extremely happy doing what I do. There have been days when I was filled with blissful joy and a sense of gratitude towards the universe for letting me be an engineer and giving me the opportunities I got.

In my experience any job in ANY field will nearly always be a mix of all three, with some tasks you feel excited about, some you don't enjoy, and some that are 'meh'? As Zach notes, the proportion of 'wow' is likely to be lower in entry-level positions but building your skills can usually help you shift that balance over time. Keeping interests outside of work really helps too - if you're doing community volunteering, being a DM, playing with a sports team, attending a church, whatever. Find things outside of work that fill the gaps which your job currently doesn't complete, and it'll make a big difference in your mental health. Edit: Really aware too that some people do end up in jobs they hate but can't leave due to economic constraints. If that happens to you for a while, maintaining the extracurricular stuff becomes even more important... and here's a wee secret, those kinds of networks outside work can actually help you make connections which you can use to find a job that better suits your needs!

Young engineers switch jobs a lot because of 2 reasons (at least in Germany were i work), first because of the salary, every time you switch you will get a higher salary ( if you're not an total idiot), second reason is that those who have higher ambitions quit because they dont see opportunities for personal growth, or "making an impact". Also i totally disagree with the statement of your video and that other guy, cause you are implying that the time you spend in an company tells you anything about a guys knowledge or abilities ? Sorry but That's bulshit, ist just a sorry excuse for those older guys in higher positions to let the young ones do the shit work. They are concerned about their own job, they have zero trust in their own abilities, cause if there is a young ambitious intelegent hard working guy, they are scared he might take their position, so they tell him "you are too young" "work another few years than we can talk". At least that's why i quit 2 jobs already., Nevertheless i liked the content 👍🏻

You have time my friend, careers aren't set in stone, and you can adapt to most situations, you won't get locked into engineering, you can solve problems, you ask the right questions, you will know what is right when it hits you, you may need to go on a long walk to find the answer, but do not lock yourself in your mind because you won't get locked, im about to be a business major, because i couldn't do math since i did bad at math in high school, but now im self learning math, and i've made it all the way through calc 3, im doing my own projects, trying to solve my own problems, so i can eventually get the certifications. Goodbye, dear human.

I really like the message of this video. Patience and perseverance are important if you want any of your dreams to come true. I am a civil engineer with a masters on water resources engineering. I didn't even like the hydrology classes, but I basically wanted to be very knowledgeable on an underrated field (our economy is vastly underestimating water safety). I got a job on R&D right out of uni, so I was pumped up for exploring the bleeding edge of technology. It had good points, but a few years in it was looking quite underwhelming. Most of the work we did was very academy oriented, and a lot of time was spent on paperwork for public grants. By the fifth year it was pretty clear that I had to get a doctorate to grow in the company to keep the grants coming, or I would be on a career dead end. This is not really what I wanted, so i quit, moved city and tried other stuff. 7 years later, i'm on a large conglomerate. My work still involves R&D, but it's internal R&D meant to develop new products for our customers. I no longer have to deal with abstract research tailored to fit a public grant that might or might not have been a mental fart. I can simply come into work trying to solve the problems of our customers, and be part of an amazing team that is amazingly talented. Yes, it took me quite a few years to find this place, and the journey was not always pretty. However, now that I am here, I feel that all the time and effort I put into studying engineering was well worth it :)
