The Truth About Euroshield Rubber Roofing shingles | Discoloration Controversy 

I had Euroshield Beaumont shingles installed on my roof in 2016... so 8 years ago (it is now 2024). I live in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada which is a cold, snowy and ice damming friendly environment (also a hail zone due to Ottawa Valley weather effects). I installed these shingles because I love my house and joke with family, friends and neighbours that I will leave my house when I am no longer alive!! Being an engineer, I was very frustrated with the exaggerated lifespan values quoted by manufacturers of ashphalt shingles. Prior to my Euroshield roof, I had installed 30 year ashphalt shingles that lasted only 12 years :(. When I was carrying out my research to replace my roofing shingles, I noted that the Euroshield shingles had a "marketed" lifespan of 50 to 100 years. When I spoke to a sales rep. in Calgary regarding the shingles "true" lifespan, I was told that they weren't allowed to quote it but... it was likely much longer than 100 years :). I have to say that 8 years later, I am very happy with my roof - no problems, no leaks :). Euroshield is very particular about who they back as roofing installers so make sure that you use a company that has been trained on how to install these roofing shingles.

I've replaced 8 euroshield roofs. Main issue they have huge condensation factor if you have vaulted ceiling. Another huge issue the lock is sosmall, and due to expansion and contraction shingle gets unhooked and oncewind gets one shingle it opens up halfof the roof. Don't forget about fire , during Kelowna fires many years ago, houses with rubber roofs were burning for days and nobody would even try to put them out. If you live in typical neighborhood with close proximity to your neighbors I would think twice going rubber. Let's not forget that Euroshield used to be Gem and had to switch their name like all companies do to fix the problems. Just give it another10 years and they will switch their name again. This is relatively new product and still requires more testing.

This is a great video, explanation and response from a manufacturer. Once that fan isn’t blowing anymore, the rest of that section will be able to equalize and this problem goes away next season. Great explanation. I think I need your shield to reach back out to me so we could talk seriously about offering this in our market.

Not surprised that EuroShield acted honorably. We do approx 1000 roofs / year in Chicagoland and putting it on my house later this year! Best roofing solution in my opinion.

I don’t work there since the day before they figured out what was going on, but I still stand behind the product and feel it’s the best roofing product on the market despite not being paid to say so anymore.

I absolutely endorse this video and this product and look forward to working with any roofers out there wanting to install one of the best premium and renewable roofing products in the world.

i worked at gem for 4 years the product is legit . there is no product that last as long as. all the workers there worked hard . henry the owner wasn’t a bad guy to work for either keep up the good work !

The vent in the video is an electric one. If a homeowner has Whirlybird attic vents, are they affected by such discolorization?

What is the color of the shingles used. I cannot tell if it was black or grey. Also, was this the HP product.. I'm interested in putting this on my roof and I like the color where it has weathered. Thank you.

Metal would expand/contact at a different rate than the rest of the roof and you may see some oil canning as a result... Paint shouldn't be affected

The choices of roofing materials are not very consumer friendly. Most of the guidance a customer gets are contractor/salesperson preferences. Driven by profit and availability. Working with a product that the average contractor has never installed has a relative shot in the dark factor for the consumer and the installer. Euroshield is an outstanding system and company. The choice between metal and a hail proof rubber is obvious after a large hail event. Metal will show the impacts, Euroshield will not. The system will only be as good as it's weakest link, and that would be the installer. If category 5 storms are a potential in the installation area, I would give the nod to Euroshield system with a mechanical locking system over metal. It would be less likely to have an entire roof failure. My only issue with a roofing system that darkens to black is why offer a lighter product at install. The lighter product is attractive for areas that can use a higher solar radiant roof. But if the advantage is lost in one season, you expose the manufacturer to issues and expense of issues such as this. Simple solution if the product is only offered closer to a final color.

One thing to note is that you cannot use 2 different batches of material because they will look really bad. Euroshield got a bad name in my area because a strata ordered two different batches and put them on the same roof. Looks so bad

It is believed that with enough time, that area will darken to match the rest.

Why can we not use metal roof instead? is it about the look of it or is it about how it helps the environment. I would say with certainty that metal roof can last longer.
