The Truth About Finishing Turned Antler

One of the most important parts of wood turning is finishing. I turn a lot of Antler and have a tried and trusted finishing routine. I have now been accused of lying about it by a self proclaimed "Pen turning expert" from America. This is my rebuttal video.

Wood turning can be a dangerous hobby. My videos show my methods of turning and if you do not feel comfortable with my methods please do not copy them but rather use a method you feel comfortable using. Your safety is your responsibility as is the safety in your workshop. Enjoy the videos, hopefully something inspires you or helps you along the way. Irish woodturning is a craft that is dying out and should be preserved so that the tradition of Wood turning in Ireland stays alive and well.

Hi Shay,I agree with what Huw said below. What most people also don't realise is, most of us aren't professionals when it comes to making videos, thus, we don't know how to do "video tricks".I also think you handled this superbly mate. Great video and the pen is beautiful.

Unfortunately there are many "Bob's" in this world. I don't think I would have had the patience with him that you have demonstated. I would have asked for his proof.

Shay, There is no excuse for Bobs comments. I found that everything I have learned about finishing I learned from you and they work if you follow your instructions. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Thanks Alan, Bob has the right to his opinion the problem I have with him is how he said it,the fact he didn't have the guts to actually comment directly on a video but rather skulked around in Facebook pms and he called me a liar. Shay

Lovely pen Shay. Bob can jog on & go annoy other guys that may react to his comments. I reckon that's what Bob's looking for & maybe to attempt to make new friends, as he obviously doesn't have any. Your going about it the wrong way Bob matey boy ! 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

In my experience it is the shady people who think others must be lying or doing something shady. "Bob" obviously thinks others are being sneaky so it makes me wonder about him. I'm saddened that he questioned your integrity. I love your channel and appreciate your long hours of making and sharing these videos. Thanks.

Great video Shay! I loved that pen kit you added, so classy and great pairing with the antler! There's always gonna be a 'bob' out there on the 'interwebs' :p It was great you took his attempted attack and made a great video out of it, a little controversy gets people invested haha Love examples of one persons attack being turned into your own gain! I am left a little curious why 'bob' thinks using CA would have been some deep dark secret you'd have felt it necessary to hide :p

Thanks Perry, I think "Bob" may be of the mindset that everyone thinks like him and will lie in a video to gain some clout by putting something new out there that is untrue. Personally I couldn't give a monkey's about clout or anything like it, I am interested in making sure the craft survives and helping people along the way if I can. Shay

It was more about how he said it than what he said Doug, the language was not for younger ears if you get what I mean, and the fact he didn't even have the guts to comment directly on one of the Antler videos but rather private messaged me. People like that just really annoy me. Shay

I imagine Bob will now be saying that your "brasso" is in fact an humungous bottle of off-coloured CA!!!!! In all your videos I've never heard you have to try so hard to keep your temper, I'm afraid it made me giggle. I can guess what you really wanted to do with that antler - and it was nothing to do with turning. By the way it was a lovely looking pen (so shiny) - and I'm not a great pen fan. Don't let the arseholes put you off Shay, I for one appreciate your videos, especially that you include mistakes.

I don’t know. If somebody is a big enough man to be an arsehole to a content creator behind DMs, they are occupant big enough men to take the heat when they are called out by name for being an arsehole. People shouldn’t be able to hide poor behavior behind anonymity.
