The Truth About Food Insecurity - Waste Reduction Talk 2022

This video was complicated to say the least. For reasons I do not fully understand, I was asked to speak at a rather large event, that focused on waste reduction and "the sharing economy". The event planners seemed fairly radical, and all of the presenters gave talks about some cool ideas like tool libraries and free stores. But things got a bit interesting when I found out that most of the attendees were "business professionals", corporate bourgeoisie, and other middle and upper management types. Assumedly they were there to learn strategies to make their companies "greener", but I didn't bother to ask.
I decided to write the script with this in mind, and was hoping to find a way to weave anarchist ideas into a platform that might get small businesses and even corporations to consider giving away free food to reduce crime, food waste, and benefit the climate.
It was a tough script to write, and I hope it turned out ok. let me know what you thought below!

I wondered the entire time I was watching why you seemed awkward and nervous, and after reading that description, it all made sense. You showed massive restraint in writing this after discovering the true nature of your live audience, and I think that's the only way it could have any hope of making a positive impact among that crowd. For what it's worth, I think you handled it brilliantly.

I read the description after watching, and then it all made more sense. I can tell you were straddling the line to not be too "extreme" with an audience of bourgeoise. I think you did an excellent job, of highlighting the motivation behind your actions which hopefully caused them to think about their own motivation for this event.

I worked at a grocery store, in the produce section, and I can confirm we wasted HUGE quantities. Displays going out of date, overstocking, preparation, packaging... Every steps meant huge bins we'd fill every day, just so that the consumer always see full shelves. But god forbid we tried to bring some of it home. As I was poor, I was forced to throw out food or I would be fired (cannot afford rent if I lose my job). Now I live in France, I do volunteering in a soup kitchen, and grocery stores have to give us unsold foods. It should be standard everywhere. Though I like doing this, I think it's a bit fucked up that if we would not do this, many people would not be eating. The free food is given to volunteers, not simply available to all who needs it. So as volunteers, we subsidize the shittyness of Capitalism. I'd still do this for free, in a world liberated from Capitalism, but I'd at least not feel like I'm complicit in sustaining the cause of the reason why those people cannot afford food.

Thank you so much for being you and inspiring people like me to do the same 🙏🏽. Im an indigenous micronesian on the island of Guam (U.S. Territory) where poverty per capita is twice as high as All of America. I actually organized a collective called Esaighon Tepángi and we do alot of mutual Aid work. And after watchin one of your older videos, I organized the very first Share Fair on our island. Thanks to you I am more and more inspired to continue organizing within the community to provide more mutual aid and Its been so spiritually rewarding.

I Couldn't Believe the Level of waste i Was Seeing. Also Aaron, i Believe The Primary Reason For Stealing Razor Blade's is To Pull 1 of The Blade's Out & Commit Suicide By Slitting Their Wrist's. It's awesome to see leftist who actually practice what they preach, I've been wanting to get into mutual aid and direct action for a while now as well, especially with my indigenous community's who I know could benefit immensely from it. As well as anarchist ideas and practices seem to align almost perfectly with our traditional beliefs and practices so it also acts as a way of decolonizing.

Amazing! So much thanks for what you are doing; all your educational shows and the incredible work you are doing as a great example for how we could and should be working with our communities to strengthen them, organizing to meet the needs of the people in our communities to show what can be done on a larger scale. Beautifully done man!!

Do you also work with community gardens or even greenhouses? It seems to me it would be a great opportunity to tie in some of the local food producers or even encourage people to grow some of their own.

None. They get the tax break if food is thrown out not given away. The State doesn't want our problems solved, they want more folks in jail for victimless crimes.

You downplayed charities a lot aswell as financial incentive structures wihout handwaving away charities outright which i think was a good idea on your part. I hope the attendees came away with the right message about free fridges and I would love to see more cities atopt them.

I get that some id probably inevitable, but only some, and some shuld be donated at least and given away. And that supermarkets can poison food and dont make it just , yeah we just put it there, a shame if it would get taken pfft pfft, ok some do, but give at least some to food kitchen, organistations, hell refugee camps, social markets for poor, .... Ideally money wouldnt matter, but at least that could easy be done, at least with a lot. Ok thats a bit charity but a yeah actual talking to people social organisation, or not organisations, give easy licenses. ?! I get destroying a bit to maintain farmers, ok, but some should have an easy route to like socisl markets or free. Like milk ok it can be hard, but potatoes, really?! I mean they dont get bad fast and whats wrong with giving it just away. Oh yeah community fridges, i know one in a local, that sasly didnt survive covid, a shame because pretty not expensive mexican real mexican food and stuff. Good idea. People have too much sometimes and , good

All of the solutions to all the problems of capitalism cuts into the profit margins and can't be done for that fact. Instead of wasting food, they could lower the prices to sell all the food, but that's not what the state wants. I would argue that this isn't real capitalism because with an overabundance of food the prices should be dirt cheap but instead they throw it out rather than sell at dirt cheap prices.
@brennanmason1973

@@brennanmason1973 Most of their economy is capitalist, so to claim they are socialist is a bit of a stretch. Why not have used Vietnam or some other country w/o sanctions/embargos in place?
@brennanmason1973
@brennanmason1973 2 года назад
@@Voidsworn Sure Venezuela is socialist. They nationalized their oil and gas industry, nationalized their agriculture industry, nationalized healthcare, nationalized schooling, the Government owns the means of production, how is that not a socialist country? Vietnam was socialist for all of the 20th century, in the 90’s they became capitalist and the standard of living there as gone up dramatically since then and is growing fast.

Sorry Eron, but I have to disagree with you there. It seems you're advocating for food banks. The problems with that have been widely discussed all over the place. Food banks are not just bad for business, they're bad for those who seem to benefit from them because they're still dependent on charity. The issue with poor people who can't afford food is simple and so is the solution; they need money. That's where it begins and where it ends. The homeless need homes and the poor need money. How to get money? Create jobs and expand social safety. Food waste is not a problem, poverty is. Poverty is solved with money, not by giving the poor waste.

This was a talk at a waste reduction conference. Clearly no one attending agrees that waste is not a problem.
