Keeping the water clear is relatively easy in aquaponics, we generally keep the fish tank covered to avoid direct sun exposition.
However, some of you are maybe converting ornamental ponds into aquaponics. If those ponds are directly exposed to sun rays, some microalgae will probably develop. Algae are not a problem for the fish and are a component of the ecosystem but they will turn the water green which is not very convenient to see the fish.
An alternative to covering the tanks is to use natural filters such as freshwater clams to regulate the algae population. Those little molluscs are working very well and filter a significative volume of water per hour (from 24 to 60 litres per day depending on species). Freshwater mussels are very interesting animals. There are hundreds of species of freshwater mussels, some of them are fixed to a substrate (rocks, roots…) thanks to a byssus (strings) and others are scrawling thanks to a “tongue” or “foot”. They are very interesting to observe in the bottom of the fish tank. You may wonder, “Will I be able to grow and eat them?” most freshwater mussels are not edible. Some of them are able to produce pearls but you must be an expert in order to produce such jowels. You may also wonder “Will I be able to breed freshwater mussels in my aquaponics tank?” It really depends on the species you are growing. Most bivalve molluscs are releasing their gametes (sperm and ovules) in the water. When a spermatozoid meet an ovule they form an egg that will give birth to a swimming larvae. Larvae generally stay in the swimming stage for days or weeks before fixing to an object. If is very easy to understand that in those conditions, even if sperm and ovules meet in a fish tank, the eggs or larvae will eventually be sucked by the water plant and finish in the flood and drain grow-bed where it would have very low chances to survive. Most freshwater mussels are actually not following this specific cycle. The males are releasing the sperm into the water but the females are keeping the ovules in their body and when they filter the water, the sperm of the males can fecund the ovules. They are therefore able to get eggs and release perfect larvae in the water. Those larvae are very specific. Unlike most other saltwater bivalves, the freshwater mussel larvae will find a fish and fix themselves on the fins or gills of the fish. We call those larvae “glochidia”. At this stage they are a parasite for the fish. Most of the time it doesn’t affect the fish too much but watch out as a high density of glochidia could weaken the fish. Each species of freshwater mussels (Anodonta spp, Quarula spp, Margaritifera spp …) can use restricted species of fish to host their glochidia. In aquaponics you will need to have compatible fish with the species of mussels you want to breed. If you succeed in this task please leave a comment and let the community know about it :)

Fresh water Clams are also eatable but you cannot just eat it raw like sea clams,first you have to boil it in low flame and after boiling it few minutes than you can cook it with spices or you can simply fry with some herbs or little spice it'll be tasty.. Thank You 👍

Useful tip for everyone to avoid the releasing of gametes. Clams and mussels usually requires warmer waters than normal to begin the breeding process. By keeping the temperature of the water low you can take advantage of the filter ability without triggering their multiplication. You can also use this knowledge to make more clams though.

Hi The Plant Hobbyist. Thanks for the nice comment.. It depends on the species but generally when one animal start releasing gammets into the water, it induce the others. The first may be due to photoperiod and temperature change. Cheers :)

I know this has been up for awhile, but I wanted to say you are very helpful. I want to use these as an additional filtration system in my aquarium, a natural one. If you are still out there, is it okay to just lay them on top of the substrate? Thank you for such a comprehensive coverage. The only issue for clams in fish tanks, is that the larvae may attach to the gills and cause whirling disease which will kill your fish. Are there live bearing clams? I am just watching another video and a youngster is talking about live bearing clams. Thanks again!

Jonathan, would it be possible to know when clams are reproducing so you can isolate them for a couple of weeks and avoid the fish having to get stressed by them? Or is there a way to keep the mussels/clams in an independent tank connected to the aquaponic setup so they filter the water but they don't interact with fish in the main tank? By the way, congratulations on the video. It's really clear and full of experience/knowledge. Thanks!

Hello Moreno. Thanks for your question. Please keep in mind that every species of mollusk has his own life cycle and can be slightly different from this general video. Most of the time the larvae need a species of fish to develop so if you want to reproduce them you need fish to complete the cycle. Therefore you will not be able to reproduce them in an insulated tank. If you just want to grow them then yes you can keep them in a special tank connected to the general aquaponics system but with filters on the returning water. Cheers Jonathan :)

I want to ask you a question: you’ve talked about how the proportion of fish vs mussels should be something to take into consideration, but how about if instead of fish my tank has shrimp on it how may affect the interaction between those two species?

I'm thinking of getting a Swan mussel they can handle low temperatures, and can get up to 25cm big but usually stay around 10 to 15cm but even then they can filter out as much as 10L of water a day helps a tiny bit in my low tech cold water aquarium and because of how big they get you could get just one so I guess that means no breeding and no larvae?

I live in South Africa and I so wish we had freshwater molluscs or a variety of species available. we have absolutely nothing . I want to introduce them to my wetland filter and my koi pond for natural filtration but I guess I'll have to make alternative plans if I ever visit Usa or EU again and find out what can be done if you fly out to keep them alive and maybe ship them if it would be allowed

Hey mate. Question: I’m just west of Melbourne. I have a 3 month old Aquaponics system I’m starting to get algae at the moment so I bought 2 fresh water mussels. The issue is the water temperature of the tank is between 10-15°C do mussels need a certain temperature to thrive and stay alive. I’m worried if the temperature drops too much they’ll die

This is my favourite food of all time, you cannot eat it raw like oyster but you have to cook it for 20 to 30 minutes if not then u can have stomach ache .

They can live for a while (depending on species). They will consume algae and keep your water clear but will not necessary be efficient to filter some other water particles.

Most shells will slowly increase the pH. That is the only limitation I can think off. If you decide to add the shell in the tank please check your pH regularly.

Come to Sabah, Malaysia. Enjoy these freshwater clams or the local calls it as LOKAN, grilled and eaten with sambal. You wont regret it. I cut my leg if the taste was bad.

Hey Aquap' I'm Filipino, fresh water Mussels are edible, okay: Sautee chopped ginger, garlic, and onion in 2 tablespoon cooking oil; then put water; then put to boil, then put the mussels (washed well,), add salt and pepper, and leaves of pepper: ENJOY as "Mussel Soup!" GOD bless! 😋😋👏👏👍👍🌈🌈🙌🙌

I'm working on mobilizing a farm system to try and combine the farm itself with your crop delivery. But I've run into a snag when it comes to trying for the implementation of aquaponics, which I feel to be, overall, a more robust and durable system through its diversity. but I don't feel fish are an appropriate biological reactor for a system that's going to have to travel over highways and city streets and perhaps even the odd dirt road so I've been seeking alternatives. I want to make the system as wide as possible; provide the greatest possible variety of biological reactors so the grower has room to adjust and reconstitute the system as appropriate to local environment. I've been entertaining chickens, rabbits and clams as possible options. Each of these options comes with its own, unique set of complications, though which will limit the flexibility of the rest of the system due to differences in Ph requirements, tolerances to malefactor presence, etc. So it's best to have as many options as possible to counter balance the challenges each of the above alternatives brings with it into the system. Do you know of any forms of aquaponic viable life that can supplement nutrient production with an efficiency comparable to fish? Or, Alternatively; Are there any fish you can think of that would be tolerant of being moved around in a vehicle and still thrive? I don't know much about bottom feeders, but being their tendency to hang out near the bottom of the water column where pressures, temperatures, and light gradients are all at higher extremes, that they might be ok with the mobile life. Also clams are basically terrifying.

@@AquaponicsRevolution Will do and thanks for the reply! I'll have to look into duck and see if there's a reliable way to prevent e.coli bacterial spread as you warned me about. Already I can see the failure point would likely be the users. I can filter all I want, but if I spread e.coli by handling the ducks and then not sterilizing well enough I'll face some serious FDA problems.

@@iamscoutstfu i thought i was the only one on this planet crazy enough to wonder about putting up a farm within an enclosed 40'ft container, whilst another 40'ft container contains all of our glamping equipment, while we drive from city to city, country to country, worldwide, visiting volunteer and charity sites doing volunteer work for gasoline, and fishing sites to supplement our food. is this what youre trying to do as well???

@@thekaizer666 No, but thats an amazing idea! I actually want to use them to bring mobile farms to areas where famine strikes. Lots of times it's because of some environmental hazard that makes it impossible to farm or, impossible to deliver the food to the right people because guarding all that farmland is impossible. But not if your farm is in a rack of four containers on the back of a military truck surrounded by NATO. We could line those up and feed a city with healthy, nutritious food that couldn't be taken from them and would take up the space of an airfield. You can cross train almost anyone to do basic farm work, and to follow a schedule for nutrients, lights, ph checking, etc. This is all stuff an average infantryman could easily do . It's amazing that we have such similar ideas, though. Have started on your project, yet?

@@iamscoutstfu hahaha! so your idea is INDEED similarly as crazy as mine! i havent started on anything, even though ive been "working on it" for years - every time i try to recruit people, everyone just thinks the idea belongs in a circus or something. so currently im applying the principles of what ive learnt about our vehicular mobile farms, into something more appealing i.e. building an offgrid intentional community ecovillage built on super-cheap barren wasteland in south america, or south asia, where the crops and livestock are done in similar, high-intensity, compact integrated ECOponics (meaning more than just fish and plants, probably clams). (also ducks, rabbits, sheep.) and once that stabilizes, introduce the vehicular mobile farm as a convoy so that residents can have a grand roadtrip doing volunteer work everywhere (like mentioned) to satisfy their needs for holidays and trips. im currently just one single lone crazy mad-"scientist" but i do plan to begin recruitment in 2021 - spend the next 2 years recruiting the right experts, discussions, planning, research etc while covid dies down, and once travel restrictions is lifted, we'd put the plans into action. im on /sidzeno on facebook, thats where i chat mostly, what baout you?

How would these go in long necked turtle tank? I’m worried they may impact my turtle’s health. I wanted to add to the natural filtration process so I bought one today but wasn’t aware of the parasite situation. At the moment it is in a planted tank that doesn’t have a filter

Melbourne Aquaponics it's an indoor 100L tank but it's like a really enclosed outdoor room so it gets similar temperatures but not exposed to the elements directly if that makes sense

They are totally edible for people who like clams, oysters, or other filter shells. I eat mussels all the time either atore bought or fresh caught. Soak em in vinegar amd water to make them release sandy crap, then steam, boil, grill, or bake them. Good protein, great with pasta, or alone with garlic butter and/or lemon. But again, if you dont like the texture of clams, ypu wont like these.

Hi Malcolm! Thanks for your feedback. Most crustacean are going well with adult freshwater clams but will be able to go through the smallest ones. Are you growing marrons? For marrons it’s a bit different, they become very big and strong. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were able to go through the shell of youth freshwater mussels. Keep us posted 😉
