Some of the best algae-eating pond fish, You probably came across our video by searching for algae-eating pond fish. well in today's video I will talk about a few fish that will eat algae in your garden pond.
Hardy - algae-eaters you don’t need to take inside for the winter
Pond Loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) - dojo or weather loach
40 to 77°F, and are well-suited for beginner
foot in length happy with docile fish
Koi and Goldfish - omnivores and will indeed feed on algae to some extent, more so in the winter months, do rely on them goldfish and koi really do prefer other types of food
Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) - Originating from Asia- different teeth, eaters of potentially problematic aquatic vegetation, won’t typically consume filamentous algae
Are Pond Fish Enough to Control All Algae?
As a rule NO - grow faster than fish can actively consume it, graze down algae during the cooler months
The only realistic way to control it would be through more traditional methods:
UV clarifiers, pond vacuums, barley straw, and even natural algae deterrents, such as pond plants.
UV Clarifiers (Green Algae)
Pond Vacuums (String Algae)
Barley Straw (All Algae - Long term)
Pond Plants (All Algae - Long term)
Water Quality Tests (Slowing Algae Growth)
Good Quality Fish Food (Less Waste)
Tropical - algae-eaters 10oC or 55-75°F
Pleco’s plecostomus - over 12” long, from South America,
Chinese High-Fin Banded Shark (Myxocyprinus asiaticus) - slow growers but 4 feet, only really suitable for very large (and deep) pond designs,
Siamese Algae Eater - 4 - 6”, most popular as they are energetic (with the character) and adept algae consumers, all types of algae, however, can stress out any calmer fish social species and need much Warm pond water approximately 70 and 79°F

Charlotte Wilson thank you, it’s amazing on how much they will eat (if it’s available). Duckweed is a great holiday food for a fish pond, it’s also being looked at by some Dutch scientist for a new super food. So the koi might have to start competing with humans. Algae is a big topic.

Remarkably the water is in pristine condition, super clean. I am thinking of adding a few good algae eaters in there as well but not sure which will do the job enough, and I don't want to drug them out in the winter. Any thoughts? And do I need to worry since water ins pristine? I mean, fish look happy and isn't algae building a natural habitat? Thank for any input.

You can’t really have a wildlife pond with fish, it’s a fish pond with wildlife. Wildlife ponds (aquatic insects) should not have fish really. Having said that I understand some people wish to have a fish pond with wildlife. I would say depends on the size of the wildlife pond, I have used rudd a few times in large ponds. Small ponds I would say minnows or rock loach, but they don’t eat lots of algae. They prefer to eat the insects and hide in the algae.

@ThePondAdvisor
@ThePondAdvisor 3 года назад
Is the barrel lined with liner? If it’s a reused barrel then you will need an insert to stop the alcohol leaching out in to the water. This time of the year (if your in the UK) will also be a large shock to the fish. You could heat the barrel to 15oC and take it down over a few weeks then next year you will be fine. My biggest concern after the temperature change would be the whiskey

Do I Cycle the water before adding fish, yes 100% if it’s a brand new pond we add the conditioners and multi aqua and multi clear to cycle or prevent problems down the line. If we have lots of mature pond water we simply pump that in (it’s cycled already), do I do any water changes I have a whole video on do you need to do water changes, quick answer no, do I use a heater in the winter, I live in the midlands zone 7/8 so it does freeze but not that badly an air stone is enough on a fish pond or leaving the filter running. Hello Mark. I was wondering, why do people always look into algae eating fish to combat string algae etc, and not other solutions, like daphnia, scads and snails? Daphnia helps me with the green water, scads with the string algae, dead fish, fish poop, dead plant matter and snails with brown algae etc. Snails tent to overpopulate, so one or two crayfish can keep em under control. In my case I utilized the availability of our local river crabs, Potamios to control snail population while adding a far more interesting ''wild life diversity'' in my pond than just fish. I bet you probably do have local freshwater crayfish or crabs in the UK. You also have some freshwater shrimps in the UK, and if added in the pond BEFORE the fish and given some time, they can build a population that will stand after adding the fish. Shrimps will also eat all the algae and dead matter, plus dead fish and mosquito larvae etc.

@TropicalGardeningCyprus
@TropicalGardeningCyprus Год назад
@@ponchosmou6450 google search ''iberian freshwater amphipods'' to find out more about your local ''scad'' species. Most of continental Europe has Gammarus pulex, you can use them but you may find something else locally that suits better your conditions. You can collect them with a fine mesh net either in ponds or streams. I wade into the stream, place the net in the water touching the bottom, and then move / flip the rocks and disturb the sand above / up-stream of the net, the scads get swept by the current from under the rocks and end up in the net. Google your species before doing so and learn how to id your local species because you don't want to move around any potential invasive species, and you don't want predatory amphipods, you want the algae eating species.

Was the pond smaller? New fish only really jump down to oxygen levels or a smaller space. Some grass carp are jumps like koi, but most of the time it’s to do with the water parameters or some form of irritation

Luke Bowler look into treatments and remedies, to lock in the nutrients, stop algae growth, your right 4000 litres is not that big. What fish do you have? Have you seen the video on multi clear?

Correct they do not live in the UK in unheated ponds, but I have seen friends across the big pond that keep them, very well all year around.

@Theodore Harrison great comment depending on what temperature your winter goes down to. Or if you heat the pond water to stop it freezing. They are not as hardy as all our ornamental pond fish in the UK 🇬🇧

All of the above, but depending on where you live will determine how long you can keep them in the fish pond.

Thanks for your comment yes it’s would be extreme, if you were stuck in a room (fish can’t just get up and move away). You would get stressed out, like some people take samples literally. It’s crazy how many people would not be bothered
