IN 1997 I WAS WORKING AS A GUITAR DEMONSTRATOR AI Dawsons music UK. My 6 Yr old son had just had a liver transplant and I was eager to raise funds for Birmingham children's hospital who saved my babies life. I was on a factory tour in Patrick Eggle a uk guitar company when the guy showing us around happened to mention he knew Gary Moore His band rehearsed in the next room to Gary's band. I am a massive Gary Moore fan so I asked him if he would ask Gary to donate a plectrum or autograph anything that we could use to raise funds for the Hospital. A few days later I got a phone call asking me was I sitting down The guy from the guitar company rung me in work and said that Gary when he heard about my son wanted to donate his charvel guitar the one he was pictured with lots of times the one with a single bridge pick up Not only that he paid for everything postage sent a strap and autographed it Gary Moore 1997. He wouldn't let me tell anyone he didn't want publicity. I and my son have to disagree GARY MOORE WAS A WONDERFUL HUMAN BEING AND ME AND.MY SON WHO IS 33 NOW LOVE HIM.

I agree with you. I’m a performing musician and I believe girlfriend jealousy has lead to the lie regarding a ‘car accident’. Girlfriend jealousy of performing musicians is beyond common in my musical career. Your post reflects many other acts of kindness from Gary. I’m 69 now, but I know first hand the terrible measures that jealous girlfriends and some wives, ex or not…will take to try and destroy you. Both mentally, physically and emotionally. I’ve had this happen. I had a girlfriend that tried to stab me in the green room because a girl wanted my autograph, an ex-wife who would go ballistic whenever a female would walk up to me in the smaller venues, and request a song. I’m so glad that your son researched and discovered the truth!

True story, I played a gig in a little pub in Northampton about 10 years ago, and the end of the 1st set was still got the blues. This hippy looking woman stood about 2 ft in front of me and just swayed during the solo. I thought she was a nut job until she introduced herself after the song as Donna's sister, Kitty. She told me how she introduced Gary to Donna after Gary had saved her from an abusive relationship with a very famous drummer of the time. She said he was on suicide watch after Donna left him for Gary Holton and nursed him back but he was never the same. I had a great conversation with her and could have listened to her for hours. The stories she said about Clapton, Rodgers etc were amazing. Her passing shot was that Gary would have been proud of my solo. I got home and sobbed me heart out. Gary was my hero and to here those words eclipsed every gig that I've played.

Paul. that was really cool of you the share what you experienced. As a musician, the stories that tell me the character of a musician mean alot to me. This is a hard life. Knowing how people handled things and what made them who they are..it says so much. When I heard "Im always Gonna Love You"...I heard Gary's pain..and Id bet it was from losing Donna. It was so authentic....it exceeded what the song could bear. RIP Gary. I always felt like I knew him.

@@georgebarry8640 Thanks George. It was an odd gig. One of those when you want to do your stuff, get paid and leave as quickly as possible but meeting Kitty made it to be up there with the best I've ever done. She told me so much about him that I felt like I personally knew him. She said that when he found out she was being abused by that drummer, Gary had a 1 bedroom flat and told her to have his bed whilst he slept on the sofa. He really looked after her and she said she loved him for it and was pissed off with her sister for what she did to him.

Well for what it's worth I worked closely with Gary Moore in the 80's during his spell with Greg Lake,Solo and Philip Lynott.I did not experience any ''nasty'' traits just an emotional Irishman who was a phenomenal player. He was quite self concious about the scars which was a glassing incident he told me.I did not press him on it.We visited Dingwalls a few times where I was well out of my comfort zone but survived it unscathed.I left Gary as he began his blues journey to work on the Emerson,Lake & Powell project.I had been close friends with Greg Lake since the mid 1960's and was ready for a new challenge.

I'll tell you something about Gary. A friend of mine had the good fortune to meet Gary back stage, Gary said lets go for a coffee, and he talked for ages about things and his playing. Not many celebraties would do that. When I first heard Gary play it went deep inside me, and to this day I still study his playing which has helped me over the years to focus on the guitar. I saw him play with Skid Row in 1970, the whole band were mind stopping. We have all got that little devil on our shoulder, but I know Gary was true to his heart. He was a very strong character I feel and could take any situation, no coincidence that he was from Belfast. I love him for his music which was a true gift.

Our offices were situated above the showroom and employees used to Moan like f*** when bands/ artist used to come and play very loud. Except that is when Gary came. I met Eric Bell in a bar on the Ormeau road Belfast many years ago, I didn't know who he was. A local blues band was playing and they called him up to do a song and when he started to play the hairs on the back of my neck stood up! Absolutely incredible! I spoke to him at the bar and asked if he would do another song. He never once mentioned that he played with Thin Lizzy I found out later. For me he is the original and by far the most Expressive and best player the band ever had.

@@anthonymitchell8893 It depends who you are, and what type of people you hang around with. Serious crime is usually covered up to protect the tourist industry. This is unfortunately what happens when someone who does not live in the UK writes a story -you never receive plastic glasses in a pub , and they were introduced in clubs because they were cheaper not because people were glassing each other -pubs were no more violent in the 70s than now , i worked in pubs here and ive seen hundreds of gigs here in standing only venues and never seen an incident with a glass -this whole thing is nothing to do with music or guitars -the rubbish about razor blades is exactly that , pity you cannot show some respect to someone who is dead now and could wipe the floor with many featured on this site..

I have looked at the photos and what appears to me, is that Gary was slashed , from left to right, by a very gagged object and by the number of wounds, this appears to be a broken bottle. That being said, who did it ... why was it done is truly not important about the man. Gary Moore should be an ICON in the legends of guitarists. Hell, I was privileged to see him twice in the early 80's. One time as a second act to Def Leppard and the headliner Krokus and he was amazing!!! Years later, I was to see him again in a small club/theater in my home town and Gary ... simply "Smoked It" ... one of the best performances that I have ever seen !!! From an interview with Donna Holton: News of the World - 1985: Donna Holton walked out on Gary Holton 7:16 in 1981 - their two year marriage shattered by his violence, drug taking and other women. But she said: "He wasn't a bad man. All Gary really needed was someone to smother him with love." Donna, torn apart by grief after Gary's shock death, knows she will have to face his other girlfriends at the funeral. She said bravely: "I'll be the strong one there. Other girls will be crying at the graveside - but not me. I won't wear black because I know Gary wouldn't want that. He would want me to be Donna - the Donna he really loved and always came home to." They met in a London nightclub in 1979 when Gary was an up-and-coming actor. Gary was revelling in his Cockney Charmer image - the act that was to make him a household name a few years later as Wayne in Auf Wiedersehen Pet. Donna said: "He came over to me and ordered me to buy him a double brandy and said he wanted to get rid of the girls who were hanging round him. I bought him the drink and then threw it all over him. I thought he was showing off and I wanted to teach him a lesson. He stood there with brandy dripping off him and gave me that gorgeous smile that I'll always remember him for." Gary moved into Donna's home that night and a few months later they were married. "Gary asked me to marry him that first night, but I didn't take him seriously at first. He'd been out with rich girls and beautiful models and I was a nobody. He came one Tuesday evening and said "What are you doing Thursday?" He put a ring on the table with some marriage application forms and said:" We're getting married on Thursday so make sure you're there." For the first ten months of their marriage Donna fought to get Gary off drugs. Sometimes he fought back physically. "Gary could be an absolute pig. He beat me up several times but it was always when he was either stoned or drunk. I was very frightened of him when he was like that, but I knew he wouldn't do it when he was sober. Once when he was hitting me I threatened to leave him. He knew I meant it and he broke down begging me to stay, I suppose other women would've left. I knew in the back of my mind that if I could stay with him I could make him better." "I didn't mind the girlfriends, Gary didn't know what he really wanted. Half of him wanted a family - half of him wanted fame and fortune. I did get pregnant by Gary but I lost the baby. That really cut Gary up because he longed to be a Dad." Donna added: "The only girl I do feel bitter about is Sue Harrison, the Mother of his Son Red. She sold the story of his drug-taking to the newspapers just before he died." Donna said every few months Gary would return to her - just turn up on the doorstep with a carrier bag. "All he'd say was "Hi Baby, can I come back?" and I'd always take him back. It sounds though I was weak, in fact I was being strong for Gary - and me." Donna last saw Gary three months ago when he was living a bizarre three-in-a-bed life with his lover Jahnet McIllwan and her boyfriend Brian Odgers. He was using a lot of heroin and was very depressed. "Gary told me he wanted to give our marriage another go and he wanted me to help him get off drugs and get back to a normal life. Looking back, Gary was afraid for his life. He knew how much he abused his body with drugs and drink and he knew he couldn't go on like that forever. If only I'd been able to see how desperate he was I might have been able to save him."

@@coloneltrumpman Sorry, no disrespect to Gary Moore really. I was just asked many times about what happened to the girl later. So I found this information and wanted to share it with you guys. I think it's really intresting and you might be interested. Plus Gary Holton is a very interesting person. He was also a rock musician and actor. He led a rock n roll life style and tragically died from an overdose in 1985.

Yes I found this very confusing, the video is supposed to be about Gary Moore & takes off in a totally different direction when Gary Holton is mentioned??? The way it's written, I first thought she was talking about Gary Moore but all the talk of drug taking didn't fit. I think that interview should be removed from here so as not to cause any further confusion, it certainly adds nothing to the subject.

@@bluesdoc737: I agree too. It could give the wrong impression that Gary MOORE was a wife-beater, which he wasn't. It makes me angry that Holton beat Donna up, and being stoned/drunk is zero excuse. Holton was himself once punched by John Bonham, and he certainly didn't enjoy that experience - nor did he fight back.

Another good man who had his heart ruined by a woman who wanted multiple men at the same time. There is reason why the best blues players can touch people's heart and it's because you have to have a broken heart to play the blues the right way and a lot of people have their heart broken or are sad in their lives.

In the 80s, as a passenger in my gf's Toyota Tercel, she hit someone who ran a red light which sent me through the windshield and I ended up on someone's front yard. It took a doctor a couple of hours to pick all of the glass shards out of my face and arms. The only remaining scar I have is a small one on the bridge of my nose. So yeah, Gary certainly could have gotten those scars from going through the windshield.

I don’t get the comment(s) in the video that said, if Gary had got those scars in a car accident, it would have taken many, many months to have recovered. So, if someone glassed / slashed his face, it wouldn’t have been any different? I really don’t get that. I know Gary could be impatient, and could show his temper from time to time (as he did at a South Coast U.k . concert I saw him at. At the end of the day, Gary was a human being, and an extremely talented one at that, his guitar playing is probably some of the very best I will ever hear in my life time. R.I.P. Gary.

All guys know this so if that's what happened then the other guy was instigating a fight. Maybe the mature thing to do is just leave with your girlfriend and go some place else, but I don't think it makes a difference if Gary was defending her honor or his own self respect. The plastic beer glasses thing is a licensing restriction that usually only gets applied to venues or events with an expectation of big or rowdy crowds (festivals, sports events, certain bars during sports events if they’re showing them on screens), or on pubs/bars with a history of violence.

I've known 2 pubs use plastic glasses for drinks due to violence in South Yorkshire - The Grapes at Dalton & my old local The Towpath at Swinton, both notably rough so served drinks in plastic from the 80s to mid 90s because of the risk of glassing. The Towpath was revamped completely in 95 as The Canal Bar, it's image altered & it changed back to selling drinks in glassware. The tables & seating were also bolted down so you couldn't overturn them or use a chair as a weapon. Swinton itself at a certain point, although being small, had a wide reputation in South Yorkshire for being rough on a weekend, notably The Towpath & The Ship Inn. Both a big part of my youth & now sadly long gone, but only The Towpath used plastic despite The Ship being just as dodgy. There was a blood stain on the wall near the DJ box once which was there ages until they redecorated 😅

The Little Un, up the road in Moorthorpe, another amazing venue in its day that was dodgy, if you upset the wrong people. I do think he overplays how dangerous it was though, and like you said, mostly the venues still used glasses, albeit some briefly switched to plastic and others did for other reasons.

@matt-fh6hb nice one!😅 Yeah got some great memories of those pubs, The Ship in particular, especially round the mid 90s. The Towpath reverted back to using glassware when it had a 'revamp' & changed its name to the Canal Bar, which was lit up at night. Few years later the 'C' stopped working, thus advertising the venue as the 'anal bar'😅

Oh, boy. I love, love, love Gary… But, this was tough to hear… As far as the last scenario goes: 1. If a girl dresses a certain way in public, it’s because she wants to be noticed and approached by a certain caliber of man. If she’s already dating/married to someone, she’s looking to replace him. A woman who is happy with her relationship will not dress or act a certain way in public that will invite the attention of other men, because she doesn’t want it. 2. Never, *ever* get mad at the other guy for trying. Maybe he is indeed a dirtbag, but he ultimately owes you nothing. It’s up to your girlfriend/wife to reject his advances. If she’s reciprocal towards his advances, the relationship is as good as over. Maybe she won’t leave you for him, specifically. But, she’s clearly entertaining the idea of other men. Walk up to them, say to her “hey, you two have a great night”; look at the other guy and calmly say “hey bud, she’s your problem now; good luck”. Walk. I don’t care how much she starts screaming and crying and pulling on you - walk. Say nothing, and walk hard. You’ll be saving yourself a whole lot of girl drama in the future, and potentially your face.

I think you overplayed the violence in Britain a fair bit there. Most pubs in Britain still use traditional glasses, made of glass. Plastic glasses are usually used at festivals and outdoor events. Ironically I have been both glassed and bottled, but by a psychotic ex, not because of trouble in pubs. Like Gary, I also tell colourful tales of where I got scars, usually through embarrassment that I allowed myself to be dominated by a woman for so long like I did. I always assumed Gary was similar, and that he was a victim of domestic violence and his it/downplayed it through shame.
