Subscribed, good video. If you are open to some input keep reading. The pee and poop are nerves, stress, aggravation, changes can cause various levels of stress and the p and p is mild protest, at least she is somewhat cooperative and entering the stall. A few changes in the stall design could make her a bit more at ease. More space from the stanchion to the wall in front and she won't feel like she is in a box trap. Mount the stanchion no more than 8 inches from the floor to the bottom of the neck opening. Lower the food pan to below her knees and she will slow down on eating while reducing the chocking hazard from eating with a cramped throat. A few large rocks in the feed pan will slow her down a bit as well. Always plan milking stalls and housing for what if she falls or goes down, prepare for the worst and hope for the best, cows will test your readiness and patients. Cleaning the milker is a bit of pain with a harsh learning curve. Surge can be easily cleaned with the right brushes and dairy chemicals that are designed to remove the milk and it's parts from the equipment. Pail mikers are much harder and become easier with time and practice. Keep up sharing what you do, inspire others to do things to improve their daily life, learn, make adjustments and share some more.

I could milk 4 cows morning and night as a kid, about 5 min per cow, never used kickers, we sold cream to the creamery so calves and hogs got the milk left over, took about 5 minutes to churn a gallon of to butter,

I was going to say use a bucket for her poops and pees and then I saw you use one. Our cow does the same thing and we always have one right behind her. She was in the habit of waiting right out side the gate and would do her thing before we let her in the stanchion. That was really nice!

We reluctantly got a melasty milker after 3 years handmilking. I'll never go back. But I am grateful I've been through it and can always go back to handmilking if needed. We clean simply with hot water then half a cup of white vinegar in hot water then hot water again. It is simple and the milk is cleaner than hand milking and we empty her out in a much shorter time. It is much safer for everyone involved. We have an outdoor milking stanchion. I agree that your feeding set up is not ideal and she should be lowering her head slightly to eat not having to lift up her head as that is not the natural position for a cow. We feed org alfalfa pellets and pellets and the machine is so quick she doesn't run out. I love your content. Keep sharing.

Yeah I'm still a little on the fence about it, but I do like it more than I did at the beginning for sure. I've gotten a pretty good routine down. Thanks for the encouragement 😊

I see you have the milker container strapped to her back. That went out 10 centuries ago. Buy some extra tubing to go from the teats to the tank and the tank some distance ahead and on the floor. God Bless Joe Scott Muddy Dog Ranch

Then I'd have to clean out long tubes. I'd rather be able to use a brush to clean out the tubes.

@@morethanfarmers your best bet would be to ask your local feed/Mills to get a price, but I don't think they are too pricey here. Compared to some of the other organic products, at least, lol.

Well "Guernsey Boy" I am glad to see that you have decided to try a milking machine. You will be glad you did once you get into it. Nothing wrong with machine milking. I milked by hand for 25 years and then invested in a milking machine very similar to the one in your vid . Now after another 20+ years using a machine .I wouldn't trade it for anything. I liked the way you repurposed the hay feeder and built yourself a stanchion. Ya might try mixing some wet beet pulp with the feed. It makes it go a lot further. I use it every day. I agree with your choice of fly spray. I use it all the time as well. Works good. You will get used to cleaning up the milking equipment. It will become a routine. In regards to your cow peeing and pooping while milking. Cows don't like change. She is in a total different situation with the machine and new stanchion and feeder etc. She may calm down once she gets used to it. It could be that she is away from the others as well. Some cows never get past that. Ya live with it or move the cow on down the road. Another thing I will share with you. When the weather get cold you might want to enclose or at least hang a heat bulb over our machine. The pump oil gets kinda thick in cold weather and it wont run as well. Or at least mine didn't. I enjoyed your vid. I admire your persistents till you get it right. oh & Never say Never.. :)

Love your videos! Hand milking for 6 years is a lot of work! I just got my first cow 2 months ago and my hands and arms still are sore. Lol! Considering getting a surge milker as well for when my cow freshens. Did the surge milker come refurbished or did you have to do some work to it? I know they are vintage milkers and I have no idea where to start when purchasing one. Would love to see a video talking about the process of how you got it, use it, and clean it!
@morethanfarmers
@morethanfarmers Год назад
Thank you 😊 I remember well those sore hands!! So my brother in law gave this one to me, and it was already in full working condition. I just had to clean it up a little. I'm pretty sure he had done some refurb work on it though. I think it's pretty simple. Hamby Dairy Supply carries lots of replacement parts hambydairysupply.com/surge-bucket-milker/cow-milking-parts-supplies/ I may do a video later on about how I clean it. Good luck to ya!
@Strevale

I feel like the milking machine never gets all the milk, it's a pain to clean, and it hurts their teats/udder more. Not worth it imo.
@morethanfarmers

Surprised that u hadn’t learned to milk the front quarts together and the back quarters together as the back will be almost twice the milk as the front
@morethanfarmers
@morethanfarmers Год назад
I started out that way, but it seemed kinda pointless to me. You have to reach around awkwardly, and my cow's front and back gave about the same. I also ended up milking on the "wrong" side of my cow because she kicked more when I milked on the other side. So then it also helped that my right hand (dominant hand) was milking her back teats cuz they were really small. Worked out great.

The pooping and peeing is so annoying! My cow goes through phases if that as well. I was curious how your puppy is doing, and also how your bees are doing? Is your garden getting close to wrapping up for the year, or are you doing a fall garden? I tried planting for a fall garden last month but we had record heat and pretty much everything died. I think I'm out of time now. Hopefully next year...

Cowboy is doing great! He's a lot of fun to have around here. I'll try to get him in a video soon 😊 I need to check on the bees. I found some hive beetles in one and put some traps in there, but haven't looked again real recently. I was actually hoping to check today, but it's raining 😒 I'm working on editing a garden harvest video right now! We don't do much fall gardening. We used to try more, but we've found it much more efficient to just grow plenty of things we can store and start eating as soon as we need to (i.e. potatoes, carrots, etc.) I think as time goes on we might do more. In this stage with 4 young kiddos it's hard to get it all done! That's a bummer.. I think there's some things you could still plant though. Have you ever read The Year-Round Vegetable Gardener by Niki Jabbour? That's Shelli's favorite gardening book, and Niki has planting schedules in there that show what you can plant in the fall. Super helpful! This is it here: amzn.to/3eqIXXR

I'm a few years ahead of you in the kid department, but I remember hanving a handful of little ones was very busy. I also have 4. My oldest is 16 and there are 2 more right behind her, and one straggler who's 7 years younger than the next youngest. I've recently been missing the days when they were little and stayed home all the time. It's a whole different kind of busy now.
