When it comes to juvenile probation, you have to deal with the parents and school. With adults in probation, there are fewer people. But the advantage is that with juvenile probation, you have the kids school, church, and afterschool organizations, and they can join in the effort.
Starting college next fall, and decided to take Social Work and Criminal Justice. I’m excited to take steps towards getting into this field, and honestly if it wasn’t for my JPO back in the day I’d be dead in a ditch somewhere by now. Good luck to anyone else on the same path

Only 3.5 years. Luck was on my side, we had a big shake up in our department. Our Supervisor became deputy director, our senior left for A job at DSS and another PO became a Sheriffs Deputy. So I took the exam and here I am lol! Just became Senior last month

I worked at a school where most of the kids were at risk, so I can relate to the frustrations of a job like this. It can be like pulling teeth to deal with the parents, or with judges who are too easygoing. But I had too much trouble with the PO's not doing their jobs. One kid was in our suspension site for three months, he was at least an hour late every day, couldn't stand having a woman say no to him, couldn't stand dealing with a man who wouldn't budge, and on the cusp of crime. Then one day a man comes in and says, "I'm Juan's PO, has he been coming here on time every day?" I was like, "Where the hell have you been for the last three months?!?"
Volunteering before graduation or finding related work after graduation (temporarily) would be helpful. Advocacy jobs are good because they give you experience with adults and troubled youth. I worked as a domestic violence counselor and advocate and this helped give me experience with youth even though my main job was dealing with adults. Hope that helped some.
Volunteer experience would be golden! Perhaps getting a job at a detention center could be an easier entry point to gain experience. What state are you in? I could ask a PO in your area specifically to chime in.
@@YourFavoritePO I am from Texas and currently there’s no detention openings at a detention facility nor juvenile detention centers. So, I am trying to see where I could volunteer or work that can count towards experience.

U need a bachelor's degree in criminal justice or psychology or something similar. No experience required. You have go through an academy for certain agencies. They'll train you once hired.
Okay have you heard of a Juvenile Institutional Officer? If so what is their job description? And what are the requirements? I do research this stuff. But I love hearing from some people straight forward.
O yes, my podcast co-host touched on it. They have to deal with kids in the detention center from what I've heard. It's a hard job but rewarding for helping our youth. I don't believe you need a bachelor's degree for that one

I am really comfortable with being a juvenile probation officer but I developed anxiety and depression from school because it’s so hard because of the pandemic. Will I be fine if I decide to work as a probation officer 4 years from now?
