The Truth About Life Coaching

Life coaches are part of an estimated $2.85 billion global industry of professional coaches. Life coaches have been met with skepticism given it is a profession that does not require licensing or formal training yet resembles therapy. With a greater interest in wellness and attempts to overcome the stigma of therapy, the appeal of becoming a life coach or seeking the assistance of a coach grows year over year.
When you search life coach, Google tries to explain what a life coach is. Scandals haven't helped the profession's reputation. But despite this, the coaching industry is thriving. According to the International Coaching Federation (ICF), it's a $2.85 billion global industry with 71,000 professional coaches worldwide and 23,000 based in North America.
The profession is growing. Between 2015 and 2019, the number of coaches worldwide increased by 33% globally and 33% in North America, based on ICF's "2020 Global Coaching Study Final Report."
"Just briefly stated, coaching is about moving forward, deepening the learning and moving forward. Therapy also super useful is about going back and figuring out the why," explains Julie Colbrese, a master certified coach and board certified coach.
Life coaching is an unregulated industry, requiring no formal education, training or licensing. This allows virtually anyone to call themselves a coach. Alyse Parker holds no credentials or education in the life coach profession, and bases her practice on her life experience. She feels the openness of life coaching has enabled her to conduct 12-week seminars throughout the year and coach over 200 women in the last four years.
"I do believe that the flexibility and the openness for me to create what I what of this, of course within the realm of life coaching, it has been a huge element of why it works so perfectly for me as a person," Parker told CNBC.
Life coaching's increased popularity, may be due to the fact that it is not therapy. Coaches and therapists are often explicit about the differences.
Life coach Danielle Copsy explained, "I've had situations with people where we started working together and it became apparent that it was a therapeutic issue. How that becomes apparent is you just literally cannot move forward."
While it's important to understand the differences when seeking a coach, life coaching may act as a needed step to getting someone the mental health treatment needed. In an interview with CNBC, Psychologist, Amanda M. Spray, Ph.D. said "There is still stigma associated with mental health treatment, for sure. I think we're making a lot of progress. There have been great public awareness campaigns that have made it more acceptable to speak with mental health professionals."

@@equivalentexchangeisalie5726 The statement carries a degree of truth, and it emphasizes the importance of personal motivation and responsibility in the coaching process. While a life coach can provide guidance, support, and strategies for personal and professional development, the client's commitment and motivation are crucial for achieving meaningful results. A life coach is not a substitute for personal responsibility or the client's active engagement in the process. Successful coaching often involves a collaborative effort where the coach and client work together toward defined goals. The coach can offer insights, accountability, and tools, but the client's willingness to implement changes and stay motivated is fundamental to the coaching relationship. However, it's essential to recognize that everyone's needs and preferences vary. Some individuals benefit significantly from the guidance and accountability a life coach provides, while others may find motivation from within or through other means. The effectiveness of life coaching can depend on factors such as the client-coach relationship, the coach's expertise, and the client's commitment to the process.

To all of the naysayers I ask this...do you think a clinical psychologist or therapist is the right person to go to if you want to plan a change in careers? If you want to navigate successful dating if it’s been awhile? If you are looking for someone to help with accountability to go after a goal or dream? If you are recently divorced and looking to create a life that makes you truly happy? None of these things need to dredge up the past or heal traumas. That’s why we have coaches. Yes, a friend would do if they are trained in things like motivation, planning, self reflection and asking the questions that inspire change. Coaches have immense value. Yes there are charlatans, but you’ll find some of those with PhDs as well. How many people do you know that have spent years or decades on a therapists sofa, with no real progress? If a coach isn’t moving you toward your goal expediently you need to find a new coach. Same can’t be said about therapy.

I think the draw to life coaches is that they seem more relatable and down to earth. People tend to be drawn to individuals they can relate to. No, they may not have a degree (all though some colleges offer degrees in life coaching now), but they have that person's ear because they aren't using big fancy words to get to the root of the problem. Therapists intimidate a lot of people. And to be honest, book smarts doesn't equal people smarts. Some therapists seem to care more about their title than the people they are charged with helping. I have seen it with 2 of the therapists I have seen and one of the therapists my son with Aspergers has seen. She was more concerned about my son touching her "therapy dog" than his issues. Smh. Life experiences trump a book smart person most days. These people want to talk to someone that they can relate to. Sorry if that bothers a lot of the therapists, but, I have learned a lot more from people who have experience with my problems than I have with the 3 therapists I have met. I felt like I was talking to a person who cared rather than a person who has memorized case studies and theories. And , honestly, some of the wisest people I know don't have a degree. They have life experience. I don't say all of this to downplay someone who went to school and earned their master's. Not at all. But if the human element is missing from your practice, there will be some who will be turned off. We just went through a rough year with this virus. People want a true connection more than ever.

I have never seen a client through a rigid clinical lens. And neither have any of my colleagues. The flaws that you have described from your experiences seem to call back to a time when therapists were very clinical, cold, and lacking humanity. Most therapists today understand that this is not only impractical but potentially harmful. I don't know enough about life coaching to say if it's good or bad. However the lack of governing boards and universal oversight in the field is troubling to say the least. You say that therapists are only in it for the money and status, which is not totally wrong (trust me I've met a few) but I could say the same for life coaches. Ultimately it boils down to the clients choice and what they respond better to. Have a good day

I thought life coaching was a scam for a long time. Why not read a book or talk with friends to support you ? This us what I was thinking But I discovered that a lot of people do not have that have that support. A lot of people need outside help overcoming some challenges. Sometimes friends can give you the worst advice because they have their own interest in mind or are scared to see you get a head, even parents will do this. I am not a coach but I have 50 years of experience behind me and a lot of younger people are coming to me to be their cheerleader and coach. I see how it helps them and I am happy to do that because growing up I didn't have that. I absolutely don't have everything perfect in my life but at least I can offer encouragement, advice for others when they are looking for it.

One thing I didn't like about working with the 3 life coaches I've worked with is that I needed specific advice for how to do things and they say, "Go find this person and ask them." I felt more like they were the middle man and didn't necessarily have the experience needed. A lot of charletons in this field and a lot of woo woo. I found it much more effective to take that money I invested in life coaching and pay a teacher to teach me to have the specific skills to get ahead in business.

In short, as a coach you aren’t helping people like a therapist or psychiatrist would. A coach is generally helping others overcome life issues that the coach has already experienced. There’s no diagnostics involved. No medication involved. You’re literally giving the other person insight on what you, the coach has already been through. How you’ve dealt with whatever the issue at hand is and the outcome. In return that client pays you for the knowledge and time spent. Which equals value.

You could have no accreditation and be great at guiding people due to life experience, genuine care, understanding etc as you could have full accreditation and be horrible at guiding people as you simply lack the experience, compassion and many other things. The world is not black and white and in reality, every person on this planet has almost something to offer in a coaching scenario... it's just knowing what you have to offer and how much you truly understand/care. You can go the textbook route, but sorry, you will simply be following robotic format in many scenarios! I'm talking from experience and as a therapist or coach, you should never sacrifice who you truly are, just to blend into programs heavily, because ppl have said you must be qualified. You are gonna fall/make mistake and possibly even realise you aren't ready to take on what you think you're ready for but stairing at paper, computers and courses for am amount of years will absolutely never give you what experience will.

Majority of my clients are just looking for someone who has no vested interest in their life, will not judge them, that allows them to talk about their desires in life. By asking them open questions it gives them the ability to open their minds to what is possible or how they can discover their own solutions. I would also be very cautious about seeking out a very young life coach or for instance a very young Financial Planner with no personal experience. At the end of the day, a legitimate life coach has the skills to add value and transform someone’s life above mediocrity. From experience, people who benefit the most from coaching are committed to making a major shift in their life. They refuse to make excuses or settle for mediocrity. People who don’t benefit from coaching don’t trust themselves. Therefore, they don’t trust life coaches and think it’s a scam. This thought process in itself is a limiting belief that often shows up in other areas of someone’s life. If you are looking for a coach, hire someone you get a good feel for, can trust, and can afford. *As hard as it is, try not to assume just because a coach isn’t for you or charges a premium they are a scam. You have to realize every coach isn’t for everyone and everyone isn’t for every coach. There are people with a wide range of reasons for hiring a coach and income.

Like I don't have any life coaches calling me, but I do get scammers. lol If someone (who is mentally sound) wants to find a consultant/life coach, they should be allowed to reach out and be okay to pay up if that person has a skill or quality they want to replicate. People who hire life coaches are usually not struggling with money if they're paying $$$ to talk to someone, which is ultimately what the service is: to talk to someone. Notice how CNBC did not interview anyone that was a victim of some life coach stealing their money? This seems like a non-issue. It's making news out of no news. Like duh, go talk to a therapist if you're depressed or having self-worth issues instead of a life coach. Counsellor must had an official degree in counselling, so it's the safest choice in more serious situations. Life coach and motivators are/can be self-made. Of course everything depends on a person's life experience, other qualifications, skills and abilities. "Soft skills" can be safely achieved with LC and Motivator. Serious life problems should be discussed with specialists of different kinds. After all, if you struggle with finances you'd rather hire someone with good experience and a degree than a 19 year old "coach" from YT.
