My family has been in this are for 30+ years so that has given me a chance to see it transform. Initially places such as Elgin, Taylor and Bastrop were not even considered part of the Austin metro and that was a good and bad thing. Having grown up split between inner city Dallas and inner city Austin I used to hate going to spend time with my family in this area as it felt stuck in time. Taylor, where my grandparents were, was still segrated in the mid 90s and Bastrop wasn't much better. Nowadays when I'm in Elgin, Taylor or Bastrop that small backwoods feel that I despised is absent and I'm not sure that is a good thing. The Hippy-Dippiness that Austin is infamous for has started to creep into these communities that were once a thing unto themselves. I moved back to DFW in 2004 but I go down to Elgin every other month or so to check in on my parents and I had actually started to enjoy the small town vibes as opposed to the hustle and bustle life of the Metroplex however everytime I go that feeling becomes less and less. My parents are in their 70s and on a fixed income yet I fear the affordability they've known for the past 3 or 4 decades will disappear soon

It’s “ship, shop, stroll.” You sip whatever booze you got, shop at the 5-6 stores providing free booze, and stroll (not scroll) up and down the streets with your open container.

Great video. I’m thinking of moving to Texas from NY. Any areas around Austin (like a small city) that have more to do (stores and job opportunities) where the cost of living isn’t super high? Thanks!

Possibly San Marcos, Bastrop, New Braunfels, etc. It all really depends on the lifestyle you are looking.

Elgin, TX has a lower violent crime rate than the national average at 19.7 incidents per 100,000 people, compared to the national average of 22.7 incidents.

There isn't much public transportation in Texas unless your in the big cities.

Who gives a shit. This is Elgin, not Chicago. There’s 15,000 people here, tops. Ride a horse. Walk. Drive a car 4 miles. Most importantly, if you’re worried about gubbmint transportation, stay the hell away from here.

A superb and honest presentor and presentation. I had forgotten to add that the housing developments shown could not be worse. Homes built too close to each other. Lack of anything tying these homes to common "green" areas, and to each other. They are also reminiscent of the much rightly-maligned Levittown developments. The lack of 21st century design elements is astounding. Also, that's a tornado area. Even from the aerial views, the homes appear to be just waiting to fly. But Ufomata is great.
