Hi Rick! I think you missed a really good scene where Ricky catches the toast from behind the newspaper just like Lucy does. It is in the episode "Be a Pal" and the way Ricky catches it is pretty impressive. He was so natural there!

Rick, your timing of this video about Lucy’s Toast came at a great time for me, as I just ran both the “Lucy Plays Cupid” and “The Young Fans” a few days ago and each time wondered how many takes that toast stunt took! And I’m in complete agreement with you: both of these episodes rank among my least favorites (no reflection of the respective guest cast). For a long time, I didn’t even realize why, but then it finally dawned on me-no Fred and no Ethel! Thanks for this insightful video!

Wonderful video! I love the toast catching scenes too! I think there's another instance when Ricky catches the toast perfectly as he's reading the newspaper. In the episode, "Be a Pal", Lucy tries to get Ricky's attention with the toaster and Ricky catches the toast! :D

Thanks for the video on Lucy's toast catching. I have always enjoyed those episodes where the toast is flying and she catches it. I always wondered, too, how the toaster was geared up to do that. Hats off to the prop department. There is another episode that features Lucy's toast catching abilities. It is from Season 2 from "Lucy Hires a Maid" episode, with the great Verna Felton playing the maid. During breakfast Ricky is telling Lucy that she needs to ask the prospective maid several questions before hiring and the toast flies out and Lucy catches it. Ricky then says to ask the maid "If she's got a catcher's mitt". Thanks, Rick, for another entertaining video.

Dear Rick Nineg: Lucy's toast is one of the many fond memories I have of the "I love Lucy " show. The most memorable one for me was when Ethel and Fred Mertz participated in disguising themselves as patriants at the night club. When they learned the Ricky Ricardo is not performing there, they cancel their reservations. Which Lucy has successfully saved her husband's job. Gale Gordon did a marvelous job as the club's owner. As a precursor of being the next man to co-star in "The Lucy Show".

Lucy's toast! Lucy was very talented in most everything she did and catching the toast while staying in character was really something. Catching the toast in the derby must have taken quite a bit of rehearsing but the last one where she caught it after it flew over the paper was amazing.

Remember, Lucy was a protégé of Buster Keaton's when they were both at MGM and Keaton was a master of comic moves like "Lucy's Toast!" He might even have advised the show's prop dept. as to how to rig the toaster so that the toast shoots high--and, more importantly, straight--enough to facilitate the catch. In gags like this one, the props are always key! Also, are we sure that Lucy's "toast"* was, in fact, toasted bread and not a more trajectory-friendly material? Pros like these leave nothing to chance, trust me! * That's TWO mentions of "Lucy's Toast"! (Now three!)

I totally remember all of these. I am a HUGE fan of the show. The first 2 I think they were trying to see if people liked the show without Fred and Ethel I don't know why. 😕 But "Lucy's Toast" is always a great scene. I never realized that Lucy's Toast-catching abilities were in so many episodes. Considering that the episodes were shot in front of a live studio audience, I'm betting she & Ricky practiced a bit beforehand! In those days, you had to be a multi-talented performer to succeed, and Lucille Ball certainly was talented. Dramatic acting, singing, dancing, even playing circus horns like a trained seal XD
