My favorite of the 3 episodes, is "Ricky asks for a Raise". I never made the connection regarding that jacket. I tend to pay attention to the ladies' fashions, I guess, because I'm one of them. Anyway, interesting, as usual! Welcome back!

I love spotting when a prop gets reused in a series, or if you are very observant, in different series. Somewhere along the way I started spotting the same horses in different westerns.

Hey Rick! Bonanza was the best at this. The actors wore the same clothes in every scene in every episode. They could mix in stock footage shot at any time and it would never get noticed!

There are other instances when they used wardrobe items and accessories out of chronological sequence, such as the animal print clutch Lucy wears to visit her childhood friend when she needs her birthdate verified for her passport. In a later Paris episode, Ethel proudly shows the same exact purse, which she bought from a Parisian vendor.

The Raise episode is 1 of my favorite episodes. I also suspect there are a lot more costumes they reused over the seasons of the show. & maybe in other shows as well.

I never realized the connections. Seeing the jacket I had always had the feeling of seeing an old friend but never knew why. Nothing goes undetected from Rick’s sharp eye.

It’s not a suit. It’s a sports coat. A suit includes coat and pants.

The stories must have been well written, the performances engaging, and enough time between reuses had passed that I didn’t notice the reuse of Fred’s suit. I likelier thought ‘What an awful jacket’. (I did notice that Lucy wears several dresses and pants suits over and over just like most people rewear their clothes.) I must add that Ricky looks really sharp in his normal black and grey business suit.

I didn’t know of all three appearances of the checkered jacket. But it seems so Fred. Otherwise it is more over the top. Very vaudeville to me. Thanks Rick.

NEVER, would have made the connection of the Fred jacket; amazing too it fit three different sized actors; I like the idea of always minimizing business costs and the DesiLu wardrobe staff has to be congratulated. Definitely would like to see move of these hidden gems.

Good catch! They must have done some tailoring though, because William Frawley, Desi Arnez and Philip Ober all have very different builds...

Yes I knew it was the same jacket from the "Ricky asks for a raise" episode because I LOVE those outlandish getups. But although I knew Ricky was sporting a loud coat in the 'contract' episode, I never paid attention close enough to make the connection that it was also the same coat. That's only a sport coat by the way, NOT a suit! Yes, Desilu WAS on a budget and wardrobe was often recycled. Also, Lucy used to wear her own actual clothes on the episodes. She was SUCH a classy dresser. One of the big jokes from the contract episode was that Desi was trying to imitate Bing Crosby. At a time when actors dressed mostly in conservative suits, Bing was known for his 'casual' attire of loud patterned sportscoats and colored shirts (white was the norm then). Which is why one of Ricky's lines was "I'm going to make that Crosby look like a bum!" And I don't know how cool it was that Vivian's husband made a guest appearance. Phil Ober was very abusive towards her and even hit her several times (the no good scumbag coward). Vivian already suffered from depression and Lucy KNEW something had to be done. She convinced Vivian to get into therapy and even paid all of Vivian's therapists bills. Which eventually led Vivian to leave him.

I love your videos! Just a question here about a comment you made in the “Fred’s Checkered Suit” episode. You mentioned that Dore Schary was married to Vivian Vance. When I researched it, I cannot find that either was ever married to the other. Dory was married to the same woman from 1932-1980, and Vivian had 4 husbands. Thanks for super videos!

It wasn't until you mentioned that Fred did indeed wear the jacket that I remembered that he did! But I guessed the wrong episode. I did recall Ricky wearing it and then again seeing it in the Dore Schary episode. But I could only remember "seeing" Fred in the jacket!

Vance, according to Wikipedia was not married to Dore Schary. It is kind of convoluted but the guy playing Scary is Phillip Ober who is married to Vance, I think.

Coincidence that a jacket shows up when Ricky gets a contract and shows up again when the movie (contract) is on hold. And earlier when he looses his job. Kind of like symbolistic jacket like how people are with superstitious items. Good or bad luck.

Interesting video about tracking a suit (actually just a jacket) through the 7 year run of I love Lucy. I dunno, the jacket looks a little different to me in the episode, ‘Don Juan gets shelved’ but if you say it’s the same garment, then it is the same garment. Interesting video

No I didn’t make the connection but I definitely do remember the suit from the Getting a Raise episode one of my all time favorites along the supreme episode where Lucy acts as Rick’s agent and makes him temporarily lose his contract(with Parley Baer executive from the studio).

Rick.. great video as usual!! but, one question.. why do you keep referring to a suit JACKET as merely a "suit"? A suit is an entire ensemble that includes a jacket and a pair or pants.. sometimes 2 pairs of pants.
