This is so interesting! I was planting bare-root 2 roses that were the same variety. I used one of those “ tones” in one hole, ran out and put nothing in the other. Guess which actually grew better…..the one without!!! Thank you❤❤

I will say, the idea of adding powdered mycorrhizae to roots before planting didn’t start out as marketing hype. Emerging research, back in my college days, was showing solid results with using it for planting tiny saplings in forestry applications. Growth and survival rates were dramatically improved. Unfortunately, as you have said, the quality of what you obtain commercially is inconsistent, at best. That’s where the biggest problem lies. It’s unfortunate, because adding living mycorrhizae can, in theory, give a solid boost to tiny plants before they are exposed to more Ideal garden conditions where such relationships are formed in the soil. Stronger seedlings are a worth trying for, but maybe not worth wasting money for in this case. Its always good to be raising questions and keeping a skeptical mind with what current trends and standard practices. Thanks for the video!

Yes, but even soil testing can be limited. We have been working with some agronomists on another project and they were relating how the soil needs can be dramatically different even a mere 10 feet apart. That is a lot of testing. But I agree, testing can be a fantastic starting point.

I have used pine needles as a mulch for years. It does not acidify the soil (as was once thought) and it's free if you live in a forested area.

Me too and you are so correct. I get a little miffed when I see others recommending adding pine needles to acidify the soil or to change the color of hydrangeas. It is such a myth. I live in a forest of evergreens and I have plenty. They also take longer to break down and last.

If you have fungus gnat issues try crumbling Mosquito Dunks(also sold in Bits) on affected soil and work in as much as possible. I also add a dunk to my watering can, it breaks apart and comes out in the water, the larvae eat it, and die. Yellow sticky traps work wonders for adults!

Please read the package directions for application with fungus gnats/larvae. They generally live in the top portion of the soil so when prepared as directed it is used as a drench. It does work very well for me.
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 7 месяцев назад
I have found that the gnats also enter through the bottom of the pot so I doubt mine are only in the top portion and the larvae, which do the major damage are throughout the soil but the mosquito bits drench does work@@Bandaid17

@@FlowerPatchFarmhouselol, those air root pruning pots gives them even more places to hide. It was out of control last year and I tried everything. I think it might have ‘controlled’ a tiny bit but there were too many places to hide with over 20 flats about to go outside-it was a jungle. Need to catch them as soon as possible. I had aphids also and never had those.

I watch all the other popular gardening youtubers and they push all the "tones" - every time they dig a hole, then they add more later and again and again. I can't afford that! My plants do just fine. I do have good soil though so I guess I shouldn't speak for other gardeners with not so good soil.
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 8 месяцев назад
Well you have put in the effort to build your soil so you should be proud of that and you would be doing your plants a disservice if you added anything else. Most soils aren't as bad as folks think. If weeds are growing they have enough to start with.

Thanks, this video is highly important and eye-opening for many gardeners. Hi from Germany and I am a graduated biologist, professional gardener who studied agriculture as well. There is an excellent channel 'Gardening in Canada' made by a lady who is a graduated soil scientist. She says that generally mycorrhiza work best on perennial plants. As I have reviewed some research about mycorrhiza and tomatoes they can really improve the tomato quality in natural soil. Research from Germany and The Netherlands. But there is very different types of mycorrhiza with different performance on different plants and in different soils. Mycorrhiza don't associate with every kind of plants and they need exchange with an active living root system for their survival. Of course you are right with everything you say. They are not known to do harm but generally it is a waste of money. Personally I have contact with a lady who has a company producing them and would get them directly from her.

Plants grown in sterile soils and growth media often perform poorly without the addition of spores or hyphae of mycorrhizal fungi to colonise the plant roots and aid in the uptake of soil mineral nutrients. _The absence of mycorrhizal fungi can also slow plant growth in early succession or on degraded landscapes._ The introduction of alien mycorrhizal plants to nutrient-deficient ecosystems puts indigenous non-mycorrhizal plants at a competitive disadvantage.

Ironically, no big box store sold the starter so I stopped using it and have seen no detriments. I will spend my money elsewhere. It's always biology. If you introduce a pure-bred poodle into a brood of wolf hounds, how long to you think the poodle genetics would last...not long. Introducing non-indigenous biology into an existing micro-biome results in the same outcome: the indigenous will always win. The only thing non-indigenous biology adds to the existing biome is Food. The indigenous will eat them up. It's always Biology.

Lol, there are a few vids that constantly promote this stuff and other ‘merch’. There is no need. The other crazy thing is nematodes. There is no way to tell if they are alive. I don’t have a microscope or maybe-it’s just not necessary. If it was necessary our ancestors would have starved and we wouldn’t be here.😅 In botany class we discussed the fungus connection and it can go for miles connecting trees. We also fed fungus and studied it under microscope. It’s just not necessary for gardens and any perennials will create their own connections. Thank you for being truthful as I believe there is a lot of bad advice out there only for the video creators gain.

What are your thoughts on using a torch burner for weeds and grasses? I've been wanting to try... obviously only while we're wet and cool here. Fire country is real 😮
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 8 месяцев назад
I LOVE mine, it is slow and tedious but I find it relaxing. I find it especially helpful in my pathways with pavers, some of those weeds come up from underneath and are a pain to try and dig out. I have to repeat the process with the burner to completely be rid of those but it isn't hard. And as I age, not having to get down on my hands and knees is a boon. Of course, new things reseed themselves in the paths but if I catch them when very little it is quicker.
