Just watched the show again with my mom. I warned her this episode would cause tears. We were both a crying mess by the end 😂

in the original, Luffy actually didn't know anything about what was going on there as he didn't hear nami's backstory. He just knew she needed to be freed

When Luffy say "I don't" he really does not know what's happening. He learned Nami's past, but he doesn't know what's happening in the present.

23:05 Overall I think the changes to Nami’s story work, but it does make this less clear. Why doesn’t Nami ask for help? Because she watched the two strongest people in the village get butchered in front of her and knows no one else stands a chance. Because she’s a 10-year-old kidnap victim whose whole village are hostages to her good behaviour. Because the marines are being paid off and there’s no other law enforcement. Because if she tried to run away he would hunt her across the East Blue and murder her sister for it. Remember what the ‘scar guy’ says 10:00 people who try Arlong die. She probably watched some of them die. Nami is trying to drive off her friends before they get themselves killed. Like so many before.

Luffy's "Of course I will" scene, even though the way it's done is kind of cheesy, I like the way they do it in the Live Action. The first time he says it, he's saying it to Nami, the second time to himself, and the third time to the world.

Nami may not have wanted help, but she clearly _needed_ help. So Luffy made sure he was nearby for when she realised it too.

Fun fact: more than a thousand chapters/episodes in and Nami is still one of the only ones Luffy lent his treasured hat to.

Of course Nami wouldn't ask Luffy for help before, She already watched Arlong beat his ass at Baratie. Not only that, but even the marines are working with him, she sees Arlong as unbeatable.

Nami's trauma of asking for help is more clear in the anime because of certain events they changed in the Live Action. When Bellemere was about to be shot, Genzo was there and Nami screamed for HELP for her mother then Genzo along with the whole village tried to save them, fought the arlong pirates but got brutally defeated then Bellemere was shot dead. Nami and Nojiko were instructed to leave the island too before the Arlong finds out about Bellemere. and she said while crying "Why do we have to leave? Is it because we're poor that I can't be Bellemere's kid anymore."

Glad y'all are loving this still. Such a fun show. I really am pleased with how good of a job they did translating the 'feel' of the show. They obviously had to cut stuff but they did a good job of choosing which things to keep, imo. Hope y'all are doing well after the long stream this weekend. Hopefully, you got some good rest in after signing off. You guys are an adorable, fun couple.

I know they did Sanji well because of the cute little smiles/smirks Bridget gives when he says his little quips about appreciating women

I know most people get got by either the Hat push, or "Of course I will", but I instantly start crying by the "You did" and "I don't". It's just a great showcase of Luffy's character, he doesn't NEED permission, or to know the situation, he just needs a reason.

The line where Nami says you don't have any idea about what is going on here makes a lot more sense in the anime because Luffy in this instance and in most instances where backstories are shown he usually isn't there or just straight up doesn't care. I don't believe he knows the back story of a single person on his crew.

So the reason Nami is actually surprised is that Arlong actually is generally trustworthy in this way: that whole “we don’t lie about money in this crew”. He’s actually very consistent with honoring deals paid for. It’s why he lets Nezumi get the money instead of getting it to keep for himself. He’s technically just not letting her go since she didn’t give him the money. Cause being honest about money exchanged doesn’t stop him from being a bastard in every other way. The other part that’s not clear is how GOOD Nami’s maps are. She’s got a preternatural sense of what geography means, notably predicting tides and ocean currents, and when they change. Arlongs pirates with their obvious advantages in being able to breathe underwater became damn near unbeatable in on-water combat anyplace she’d been able to fully plot out since they always controlled the battlefield.

The first time Sanji called Zoro "Mosshead" I grinned so hard

LUFFY IS A PIRATE it doesn't matter if it's Garp coming after him the marines will be after him regardless. At least Garp wants to capture him and not kill him.

I just want to point out that Garp is not the only Marine out there, so his worries make sense as even if he doesn't try to capture Luffy, sm1 else will, esp if Luffy is trying to become Pirate King. Garp's a Vice-Admiral who refused promotions, which means that there are ppl above him in ranks. So just bc he captured Roger doesn't mean he's the only Marine threat a pirate would have. And pirates have generally been shown to be evil within the show, so of course he wouldn't want his grandkid to be one (the only good ones have been Luffy's and Shank's crew, with Zeff and Mihawk being more gray area--the former did attack to loot a civilian vessel and the latter destroyed an entire crew just bc they woke him up).

It's not just you guys, but it's so annoying when reactors constantly ask "why" and call characters dumb instead of trying to see things from their perspective. Nami literally watched her mom get murdered by Arlong and Luffy was 1 second from getting his head torn off last ep. If she cares about her sister and her crew, of COURSE she wants them as far away from Arlong as possible.

The anime explains what happens to the mom better as they have more time. Nami's mom is the strongest in the village as she is an ex-marine. Arlong used her as an example for the rest of the village. Pay up or else.

Arlong specifically points out that killing Bellemere is an example to everyone else in the original: He may not get HER tribute anymore, but now everyone has seen how willing he is to follow through on killing anyone who doesn't pay. He's ruling through fear, and needs everyone to remain scared of him.

"Can I get a flashback in the flashback?". As an anime fan, be careful what you wish for.

There are 50 people living in the village. 50*100k=5,000,000. If you forgive everyone who cannot pay, others may also stop paying. In fact, it is more profitable to kill 5 people, but the remaining 45 will regularly bring in 4.5 million each time because of fear.

You can't keep being a double agent if anyone from the village knows your plan cuz anyone from the village can easily turn their back on you on anyday they learned you are earning money and snitch on you, Nami knew early on that arlong is shrewd. It was the best move she can think of to isolate herself and hope that she would be quick enough to save up enough before arlong totally dries up coco village. it may not be the best approach but its her best plan. And the more people who knows means more chance for F-ups and Slip ups. Sometimes when a person is so set on a plan for so long that they are blinded by it and almost loose everything even their heart just to attain a goal. So yeah, your frustration is warranted because that is the feeling of the people in coco village and Strawhat crew except for luffy. However missing the point of view of Nami or at least her side of the truth. which is what luffy is trying to be patient in understanding. Nami did not have the perfect plan but i bet we wont be able to even think of such plan if we were placed in such circumstance, we'll probably think of something even more worse and hasten our death.

I don't think you guys got that if Nami showed any affection towards the villagers, or especially her sister, Arlong would use that as even more of a pressure point to torture Nami then he already was. The situation surrounding the village and Nami is a bit different then in the manga and anime, but the consistent part is that Nami didn't want the village to know she was doing what she was doing because she was afraid they'd stop her, since it's basically a fools errand having a kid try and collect 100 million Berri.

Maybe they should've had Luffy say, "WELL, ACKTUALLY!" when Nami says that he doesn't know anything about what's happening. Might appease the critics!

They changed it quite a lot from the original how the events unfolded, but they reached, kinda the same end goal and was still amazing ❤️

I actually like the fact that Luffy knows more about the backstories of the characters in this. In the anime, he often comes off as not really caring and just wanting to go on adventures (obviously he is a good person, but the anime and manga often make it seem like he isn't really concerned with what the other characters went through). But in the live-action series, he's often there to hear the characters' backstories, or at least to get a cliff notes version, which enables him to better empathize with the crew and supporting cast. And obviously, Oda was fine with these changes. If he wasn't, it wouldn't have happened.

Arlong didn't kill anyone as far as we know, when he got to Koko village. So business wise, it made sense to kill the one person that didn't pay up. It was enough to put everyone else in line for more than a decade.

Zoro and Sanji dont like eachother because of their opposing beliefs about how women should be treated Zoro thinks they should be treated equally and Sanji believes they should be treated better They have respect for eachother as crewmates and faith in eachothers capabilities, but because of the women thing they just dont get along

Funfact in the anime luffy legit doesn't know Nami's Backstory. He doesn't care about your past, all he cares is the present you. That's why he said "he doesn't know"

It's been quite a while since I read the East Blue Saga, but if I remember correctly, the reason Genzo had a pinwheel on his hat was because Belle-mere (or someone) told him he had a scary face so it put that on there so he wouldn't scare Nami and Nojiko when they were little. Or something like that. Another fun reaction. This is my favorite episode to see people react to (well, this and Sanji's flashback). The emotional flashbacks of Nami's childhood and the murder of Belle-mere, then the moment when Nami is absolutely broken and finally let's Luffy in (the visuals of the "Help me" scene are directly and perfectly copied from the manga). Such a great reaction. I had fun watching, and can't wait for the season finale. And if you guys decide to go on and watch through the anime because you can't wait for more One Piece, I'll happily watch those reactions as well. I already subscribed, so hopefully I'll get the notifications when you upload.

Nezumi is a human, he just wears a rat costume in the same way Garp wears a bulldog costume sometimes. It seems to be part of the marine ceremonial uniform to dress up as animals. But aside from dressing up, expect a lot of human characters in the future that look... ...off-human. In the manga this was already kind of the case with Axe-Hand Morgan, but he won't be the only one. I guess you kind of already see that with Buggy, he's human but has a very inhuman nose.

That scene when Bellmere pointed a gun to Arlong when he enters to her house was so badass in the anime🔥

I think for Arlong its not about the money, its whether the humans in the areas he controls continue to be useful in some way. If not, then they don't deserve to live

I think the best thing about the original is that Luffy didnt want to know Nami's backstory. He didnt care and trusted her fully. And when he saw her cry, that is the only reason he needs to fight arlong.

Bellemere said the truth because Arlong and his gang would have eventually seen the two girls and murder them for "lying". She actually did save her children.

Nezumi means "rat" in Japanese. A little on the nose, but at least they didn't translate his name to Officer Rat. Probably slightly less silly this way. Still a rat for taking bribes though. Not sure why Nami couldn't pull her staff out and beat down those Marines. She took down more than that many in the first episode. I think Arlong hates Marines more than any other humans, blaming them for slavery, so when he figured out Nami's mom was a former Marine, he probably wanted to kill her. Letting a former Marine live in the village they were going to use as their hideout was probably too risky. Even if she paid, I imagine he was going to kill her sooner or later.

Being so protective of his straw hat the whole series up to this episode already, calling it his treasure. Then putting it on her head was such a huge emotional wave when i first watched it in the anime. Loved the reaction!

Why would Arlong kills someone who doesn't pay 1 time? because money is not the purpose, control, power & revenge is. If he doesn't kill someone when they can't pay, than rest of the village people get lenient too in getting the money. Right now they try their hardest to survive but if there are conditions they won't pay, and he let them live for money than rest don't try hardest. With that people are suffering more than if he would've killed them and he is earning cash too

I understand there is a lot cut for the Live Action but like you said a lot of things about this doesn't make sense which is funny since for a lot of people in Manga and Anime Cocayshi Village is their favorite arc of the East Blue and I think it is my least favorite of the Live Action due to the inconsistency and just missing/changed information.

Something I’ve noticed while watching everybody’s reactions to this show is that the people who haven’t seen the anime don’t seem to really understand the situation Nami is trapped in and the absolute desperation and hopelessness that she feels. This isn’t a criticism about you guys-I’ve been loving your reactions btw! It’s just something I’ve taken note of happening a lot, and it makes me think that it’s an issue with the show rather than the viewers.

Nami stole the money from bad pirates since she was a child up to the present..in the anime it was shown a few times but I guess they don't have enough time to include in the live action.

The "I dont" actually made sense in the anime cause Luffy LITERALLY doesnt know anything about the village. He saw Nami hurt herself and decided to step in. Also, 100 million berries doesnt sounds THAT much. 1000 berries equal to 1 dollars so its around 100,000 dollars (still a lot but ya know)

You guys need to watch the Original Anime. The live Action it great but the Original Anime has more depth and it’s such an epic story. I’d love to see you guys check out the Original Anime One Piece. Even if you can’t react to the anime you should still check it out on your own time. It’s that good.

In the anime Arlong executed Bellemare in front of others. It was definitely a show of force, and a warning to the rest of the villagers. In this version it seems like he did it for no reason.
