These animals fuel our nightmares and star as the great villians in our movies and folklores, but what is truth, and what is fantasy?
I was invited to give a guest lecture at Utah Valley University to address these questions. How much fear is appropriate? The animals addressed in this lecture are the most feared and reviled in North America. Without a doubt they are potentially dangerous. But the truth is, our social fear is far more dangeous.

Decades ago, when dumps were still allowed, Mom and Dad would take us kids up to go watch the bears. Through the years, we continued going to watch bears. Older and with my own car, we were sitting up there watching, and one of the local drunks thought he'd take on a bear. He was NOT with us. Thankfully we were able to talk that MOMO into getting back into his car, and not trying something SO stupid......And my old bear ranch owning buddy told me once..."No matter how you treat a bear, he's going to do it back, just a tad rougher...cause he's going to show you HE IS THE BOSS"....This is an awesome talk! Only someone with a brain can pull this off. Thank you for being that brain!! I love wolves. Stunning animal. I live in the Copper Country of Michigan, which, if you put your left hand up, your thumb is our peninsula. Way north is Isle Royale...there's wolf and moose there...it's always making news. It's truly amazing. I have seen wolves running down the road...that's as close as I've got...but they are so stunning and so important!

I actually encountered a wild pygmy rattlesnake hiking today iy was right on t edge of the trail, took a pic from a safe distance and walked on

Moose, lion, bear, and wolves. Moose are dumb and attack ford trucks and swing sets. I have more faith I can scary away a bear than a moose. I have scared black bears off my bait pile. Only worried about wolves after I am processing game. A bear hunter had his bear ripped apart by wolves in 30 minutes. Not far from his tree stand. This happened in U.P. 2022 not too far from me. Truthfully after dark processing game and rifle or bow out of reach is scary. It's why I like headlamps and carry both spray and revolver. Old bears can be overly aggressive when under weight. I have heard 2 stories of bears saving humans from lion attacks. One grizzly asked a guy for help freeing cub from net in river. I would hate to have to shot a bear for defense and not to get to keep the bear. I like wolves. I think it was cruel to reintroduce wolves to Isle Royal. After what happened to last wolves. More like a tourist attraction than in name of science. Starvation, disease, and inbreeding or death defying 15 mile swim or chances on falling through ice is gonna be fate of new wolves.
