There is so much misinformation about fertility. One common misconception is that passing 35 years old is walking off a fertility cliff and people often quote the statistic that 1 out of 3 women over the age of 35 will not be able to be pregnant within a year.
The statistics quoted:
(1) David B Dunson study:
- 82% of women 35-49 got pregnant within 1 year
- 86% of women 27-34 got pregnant within 1 year
(2) Boston University Study:
- 78% of women 35-40 got pregnant within 1 year
- 84% of women 20 to 34 got pregnant within 1 year
(3) North Carolina School of Medicine study:
80% of white women with 'normal weight' got pregnant within 6 months.
(4) Rates of genetic issues
1 in 100 for women 35 years old
2 in 100 for women 40 years old
13 in 100 for women 45 years old
(5) Down syndrome rates:
1 in 500 at 20 years old
1 in 400 at 30 years old
1 in 65 at 40 years old
(6) Blood pressure issues
2% rate at 30 years old
4% rate at 40 years old
Summary:
This data tells us 2 clear things:
1) Fertility decreases with age and complications increase
2) The VAST majority of women at any stage in their 30s will be able to get pregnant on their own
Simple guide, have your last child before you turn 40. After 40 you are rolling dice which may turn out okay or may have consequences.
And finally, as with all numbers, keep in mind that these stats only reflect the 100s or 1000s of women in the study. They may not represent all women trying to conceive. Each couple is unique.
