Plant food provides a balanced blend of nutrients to support overall plant health, while fertilizers target specific nutrient deficiencies in the soil. I feed the soil which in turn feeds the plant. I am trying hard to avoid synthetic fertilizers and making my own compost and weed teas. Hoping in the long run it helps. We have rather poor sandy soil which we mulch as much as we can every year but now we have drought in the upper midwest zone 4. Very frustrating. Im tired of feeding the commercial beast to feed my plants. Heaven knows we have enough weeds we can use. Im growing comfrey for the first time this year. They took off really well.🤞🏻I also found a wild patch of comfrey I just picked from.
A great green manure that is beneficial for beefing up sandy soil and feeding it is Common Buckwheat. I am growing it in patches in my garden beds and cutting it for mulch. I don't let it go to seed as that could be problematic as it is so easy to start from seed but it can adjust the ph of your soil as well as feeding the soil in as little as one season. I am testing it out in garden beds during the growing season as opposed to just a cover crop when a bed is cleared of a crop. I will report on my progress and findings!
Pam, I have a video idea for you if you are interested. It would be lovely to see a compilation video of your garden throughtout the years just to see how it has progressed! I know this would be a time intensive project-just throwing it out there! :)
Great idea! Yes, I have thought about it and maybe that would be a good project for the winter when the garden is covered in snow and I can really focus on it. To do it this time of year would be madness as I am already running around like a crazy woman trying to keep up.
