The Truth About Sheriff Pat Garrett

On the night of July 14th, 1881, Sheriff Pat Garrett killed Billy the Kid. In doing so, he helped create a legend and ensured that his legacy would forever be intertwined with that of the notorious outlaw. And let’s be honest - it isn’t that great of a legacy. Many consider Garrett a coward, at best, a no-good backstabbing Old West Judas who betrayed his friend for a handful of silver. Moreover, Pat is also labeled as a rank liar and an egomaniac. A glory seeker would turn on his mother if that meant earning a little dough and building up his reputation. And, over 26 years after he gunned down The Kid, Pat himself would be shot and killed under similar circumstances. A murder that to this day remains unsolved. Who killed Pat Garrett? How accurate is the narrative surrounding the former Sheriff of Lincoln County? Is all the hate deserved? And who was Garrett anyway? What was his life like before he met the Kid? And what became of Pat in the decades following that fateful night at Fort Sumner? This is a compilation of a previous series released on Garrett. Enjoy! #history #wildwest #western

My father, a former lawman in the late 1940"s, was a business man in the 1960's. He was based in Texas, but frequently was in New Mexico, where he was introduced to Jarvis Garrett. Garrett gave my father an autographed copy of his father's book. Upon my father's death in 1982, I came into possession of this book. It was an interesting read to say the least. And being a lawman for decades myself, I must admit it was a source of inspiration to me. My family were all peace officers since 1882, and ended with my own retirement in 2002. And every one of us were involved in shootings with armed fellons during our careers. Being of a family of lawmen, I was a great admirer of the lawmen of the west. Of those I held highest was Bass Reeves. He was uncompromising a great peace officer, and among my childhood heroes.

Bass Reeves seems to have always get his man from what I have read over the years. If I had to pick some one to go after a real bad man it would be Reeves or Jack Coffee Hays.

For some reason his pistol sold for $6,030,313. For some reason it sold for way more than other lawmen and outlaws. As far as running into Wyatt November 27, 1879 in the Butter Bar in Jerome, Arizona Territory. I’m still amazed that Garrett didn’t get a picture of Billy this was done a lot back then. There’s a picture out there is a picture of Billy and another fellow dancing and Pat playing fiddle and a picture of Billy playing cards with 3 other guys

Good episode. Quick thing: Briscoe was not a partner. It was only Glenn, Garrett, and Duke starting the partnership. The three men encountered Briscoe at Frank Conrad's store at Fort Griffin. They also encountered a man named Nick Ross (alias Nick Buck) and a cook named Grundy Burns. The Garrett-Glenn party began in the Double Mountain country, approximately 100 miles north of present day Abilene.

I always get a few laughs hearing you, e.g., that you wouldn't be eating food prepared by a cook named Grunge and referring to Biily the Kid as BTK😂. It took a lot of courage to live in those times, especially trekking through Indian territory where the Commanches roamed free. I wonder what the average life expectancy was at that time. Thanks for all the research you put into your videos. By the way, I don't think Pat Garrett was a coward. Billy was a wily and cautious desperado who had eluded authorities time and time again so why wouldn't Garrett take whatever opportunity presented itself to do what he had to do? It was hard enough to track Billy down with little cooperation in "Billy territory," and how would it look if he allowed Billy to win again after he just recently escaped from the grips of jailers Olinger and Bell. No, it came down to either him or Billy, and just like it stated in Lee Wallace's Wanted Poster, 'Dead or Alive' so no one should blame or accuse Garrett of being a coward considering the circumstances. It was a job.

I don't even know about Pat Garrett multiple people said that he ran away screaming like a woman as did his deputies. This was after the supposed shooting of the kid and because he believed he only wounded him or perhaps didn't even hit him at all he was running screaming. Selena Maxwell came outside told Pat Garrett once again he had shot the wrong man and finally they got him calmed down to come back and look at the body. He told multiple friends that he thought for sure that that was Billy the kid but it was a half-breed Mexican with a beard. Zelina Maxwell said her her father and the coroner's jury along with Pat Garrett and his deputies all knew that it was not Billy the kid. She said the coroner's jury were all friends of Billy the kid and they told her later they said it was Billy the kid to both give him a chance to escape and to get the law off his back as they were great friends of his. Selena said she told the very unbreak Pat Garrett and deputies that it was Billy the kid for the same reason. She said I'm telling you because we all knew it was not Billy the kid we allowed our friend to escape and it worked. She claims also that he stopped off at the ranch multiple times after his supposed death. She said the deputies at first told Pat Garrett he had shot the wrong man as this man had a beard and Billy the kid was known to not be able to grow one in fact he could barely grow a mustache. Show Pat Garrett and his deputies also claimed it was Billy the kid but for a different reason to save Pat Garrett from The hangman's noose. And is everyone says it doesn't matter how far the camera was Pat Garrett would have made sure to stick Billy the kid on ice and get a picture of him as this would likely put him in the governor's mansion. He could feel the forward to take a picture as any other lawman would do because it was well known at least around that town that that in fact was not Billy the kid. This is the also the reason that Pat Garrett told the grave diggers under no circumstances are they to open the coffin. He did not have to bully the coroner's jury into saying it was Billy the kid as some people claim they were only quite willing to say it was Billy the kid to allow him the chance to escape. Same thing with zelina Maxwell. Years later even her father seemed to confirm the story when asked by a man if it was really Billy the kid Pete Maxwell is reported to have said not unless Billy magically grew a beard overnight and I turned Mexican. He is reported to have said that Pat Garrett said it was Billy the kid for two reasons first he was tired of chasing Billy the kid he wanted the reward for Billy the kid and he did not want to face a coroner after shooting a wrong man that was in fact unwanted. Back then even lonely and we're not above the ball unlocked today and they can put their own head in the noose for shooting an innocent man. Selena was the first person in the building and at first she was crying until she saw the man. Then she smiled as she formulated a plan right then to get Billy the kid both free of the law and presumed dead. The coroner's jury were also Mexican and they said it was Billy the kid for the same reason although not one of them believed it. The pinkertons who done the same thing for Butch Cassidy and Sundance kid they went to Bolivia heard about the supposed gunfight knew that there was no way that was Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid and kept them on their wanted posters. They believe the same thing happened to Billy the kid and so they had a warrant for him as well and they kept him on the warrant. At first there is actually a paper on this the governor refused to pay the award because he said there was no evidence that Billy the kid was dead and in fact there was more evidence to suggest he was alive. After a while he did receive the reward in addition to about 10 times more money so you actually became wealthy for shooting an innocent man.to me it's it's amazing that people are so quick to claim Billy the kid back then and even today for the shooting of sheriff Brady when there was six other men with him also firing and no one knows who's bullet took down brady. It is more likely that Billy would have been shooting at Billy Matthews who survived the gunfight as he Billy was known to hate the man. Billy the kid's bullet or one of six other men took the life of sheriff Brady and his deputy. But I believe firmly and I'll never believe otherwise and no I'm not necessarily talking about brushy bill that Billy the kid survived and outfox them all. It will never be proven however the people that claim he is dead can't prove that he did die in 1881 either. If you had to win around Texas New Mexico or Arizona at that time you wouldn't have found a single man that actually believed that Pat Garrett had shot Billy the kid because even back then they were saying oh he would have definitely put him on ice and took a photograph. They make all sorts of lies about brushy Bill and he may be lying but he did speak Spanish fluently as did Billy the kid as he spoke to a woman in New Mexico in 1949 quite fluently. Also he was ambidextrous as Billy the kid was said to be and he could escape Cubs which only one in 100 million men are estimated to be able to do. There was hardly 100 million people in the entire world at that time so it's odd that you can see two different men in New Mexico that can escape Cuffs that's beyond astronomical. And there is much more evidence suggesting that Billy the kid survived a lot more than there is suggesting he was killed as even the governor at the time believed that Billy the kid escaped but he had Pat Garrett denying it for a very good reason due to his own safety and his desire to get the money I mean he was greedy wasn't he. He used the money to open a hotel as well as buy a home. Pretty good restitution for shooting a man that probably in all probability was not Billy the kid. Another side note Billy the kid's horse was gone and it was never seen again. The half-breeds horse was also in the corral and it was never ever claimed again. That's not an opinion that's a fact.

Like Ted Nugent says in his song "The Great White Buffalo", the Indians needed food and some skins for a roof, they only took what they needed, millions of buffalo were their proof, and then came the white dog with his thick and empty head, he couldn't see past his billfold, he wanted all the buffalo dead. No more words could have been more true, what big big shame! Luckily someone came in and saved the last small small herd, i believe those were the plains buffalo too, there was two different type of buffalo, the plains and the woodland buffalo, and one's horns were turned up while the others horns were turned down, or something like that. And the plains buffalo was the ones that numbered in the millions.

@WildWestExtravaganza - Not what I meant Josh. A lot of us like You for You. The rolling Rs are great. Because it's not every time. It's just when you feel it. I've actually been driving down the road and done both the Rolling R and the Ye Hay which is in the intro song.....Out Loud. With a big smile. I for one think you have a talent for this. I want to see you succeed.

The catholic diocese of ny has Billy’s baptismal record

That has yet to be proven. We can make a guess but there’s still no actual proof that he was born in NYC. His mother was living Indianapolis in the late 1860s but Billy’s name doesn’t first appear in known documents until his mother’s marriage to Antrim

I don't understand why you resort to such vulgarity on your programs. Did it ever occur to you there might be children listening to your channel?

@WildWestExtravaganza 10 дней назад
Ronald, it has crossed my mind that children could listen. After all, this is the Internet, and anyone can have access to it. I've always hoped that parents and grandparents do a little better at monitoring what their children are consuming. This channel's focus is Old West history, and Old West history is comprised of a series of violent atrocities and merciless killings. Vigilante justice, mob rule, assassinations, etc. Pat Garrett lived a violent life, and he died violently. The man was shot in the back while taking a leak. Why would anyone think this would be an appropriate topic for a child to listen to? Real-life Old West history is not hee-haw. Real life is not a black-and-white AMC Western where the good guys always win. It's scary and dark and violent. This channel is not meant for children to consume and I can't imagine anyone thinking it would be.

When you start using terms like "BFF" I tune out. I just stop the video. What are you going to tell me next that neither Billy not Garrett used Twitter? Stop it.

Billy was a murderer. Putting down a murderer is not snitching. Grow up.

It's a bit more complicated than that. There wasn't actual rule of law. Some of the judges and many of the law enforcement officers were also murderers and it was kill or be killed - or try to run away and wonder if you would be hunted down, if ever found without friends who would literally have your back. Almost all the participants were guilty to a certain extent, but you have to immerse yourself in both the moral and physical context of the reality of the situation. It really was a war, an organized crime war, and the corruption goes all the way up to the top.
