If you ever wanted to know about swimming in Great Salt Lake, watch this video and learn the truth! We attempted to swim at Antelope Island State Park in Utah, having heard that floating in the high salinity water of Great Salt Lake is a unique experience. After a half mile walk on blistering hot, salty sand, in 105 degree weather, we reached the shoreline. The water was absolutely putrid and there were trillions and trillions of biting sand flies literally in a cloud like layer along the shore as far as the eye could see. The smell was insanely horrible, possibly the worst smell you can imagine. We never set foot in the water, it was simply to disgusting! Antelope Island State Park was cool in that you could see wild American Bison grazing in the grassy plains. If you have the desire to swim in Great Salt Lake, beware of the sand flies and the disgusting stench!
