The difference between the 85/86 is the starter jet. 85 Has a press in starter jet #55 on he bottom of the circuit. The 86 had a larger #70 starter jet located on the side like your aftermarket carb there. You can easily use a micro drill bit set with a .80mm drill bit to drill out the pressed in jet on the 85 carbs and it will start as easily as the 86/87 ;)

the great mustie1 has a video where he removed the rust the same way BUT instead of sitting around shaking it back and forth, he strapped it to the back wheel of his truck, jacked the truck up, then put it in gear and let it spin for like half an hour. The results were nothing short of looking like a brand new gas tank inside.

Great video mrc_builds!! I Loved and miss my 85 Big Red. They really do not make bikes like they use to. In my personal opinion the quality is just not there anymore. I have a 2019 Rubicon 500 DCT Deluxe, and I also have a 1999 Honda TRX300FW, and doing a side by side comparison, you can see how Honda had to skimp on quality of the Rubicon just so they could keep the cost down because of all the technology they put on it, like fuel injection, power steering, DCT transmission. Even the racks on the Rubicon are not the same quality steel as the old 300. I miss the good old days when the trikes were still being manufactured and sold. That's when bikes were bikes!!

A little food for thought with the bowl gasket on the carb. I like to soak the rubber gasket in vinegar for about an hour it seems to reinvigorate the rubber it gives me a bit more confidence in the seal when tightening the screws. Also you can do that with the intake manifold as it gets a bit hard over the years. If you notice that the bike is running rough as if it is having an air leak you will want to replace the intake manifold. They do leak at times and there is not fix to it. You can still get them new from Honda with the part number.

You should try muriatic acid mixed with water, really heats up good and gets the tank back to bare metal. Maybe it looks worse on camera than in person, but man, it looked like there was a lot of rust left in that tank when you coated it. I don't think i could sleep knowing I did that. Is this going to be an issue going forward and should I ask him about it, or is it minimal where as the rest of the tank should be fine now? Just wondering what you think. Hello. I was wondering if you could give me an estimate of the value of a brand new Big Red 3-Wheeler. I am the Executor for my neighbor's Estate who passed away at age 96 in January. My wife and I have been slowly doing an inventory of his belongings and clearing out his home to prepare for an Estate Sale. Dale, was a "collector"....i.e. hoarder.....so it has been an extremely time consuming and labor intensive process. As one would expect, we have been finding lots of brand new, in the box tools, small appliances, firearms and etc. And Dale had many old vehicles which I have been pulling up from their parking place and advertising and selling (plus farm implements). But....the reason for my writing you is that back in his shed we uncovered a brand new Big Red and a hardly used Kawasaki 100 motorcycle. I have been letting them set as there was so much for me to work on...but today, on July 4, I finally got the shed cleared out enough to actually get to the Big Red and the Kawasaki and look them over. I checked the gas tank on the Big Red and it was rusty. That is why I found your RU-vid because I was searching on how to 1) remove the gas tank and 2) how to clean it. So, I think your Tube gave me all the info I need to remove and clean the Big Red Tank and coat it (and the Kawasaki Tank). The story Dale told me was he purchased the 3-wheeler back when they were deeply discounted as 4-wheelers were beginning to be popular. He told me he purchased it and then and simply parked it in the shed and never drove it. The shed was so full of stuff, snowmobiles, equipments, supplies, tires, a boat, vehicles and odds and ends from the previous 120 years (Dale was born on the place as an only child to his parents), that, even though I had been in the shop many times over the last 22 years, I had never seen the Big Red. The story on the Kawaski is that he purchased it to run out and check on his cows but had too much trouble starting it (I think it is a 1976) and simply parked it too. I will be removing and purchasing/installing new batteries in both the 3-Wheeler and Kawasaki. So I don't know exactly how many miles are on the Big Red as it looks to me like it is a digital display. Kawasaki has 232 miles on the OD. So, I thought maybe you could give me an idea of what a Brand New Big Red may be worth as I need to get it sold here in the next month or so....and If you have an idea on the Kawasaki, I could use some help there too....although the Kawasaki was parked out near the entrance to the shed and has some pretty serious rusting through out the metal parts. The Big Red, though, is really clean. Thanks.

@@mrcbuilds thanks for always taking the time replying to us ATC boys. There isn't much information on youtube for these old trikes and your videos on your channel definitely helps us out enormously.

Go to partzilla.com, find the parts your missing, write down the part numbers, if they don't offer it, ebay would be my next place to look, then the FB forums.

One thing to know is the original gas tank is actually bigger than the plastic gas tank

I have a question regarding the process for the vinegar in the tank. Can you put electrodes in the vinegar and put 12 volts to it to help release the rust from inside the tank??
@mrcbuilds
@mrcbuilds 2 года назад
I'm not sure how well viniger conducts electricity. I have seen it done with other liquids, might be worth a try

@@mrcbuilds vinegar is very acidic I am done it many times in an old lunch box with carb parts they are spotless. I use an aluminum bolt attached to 1 wire and then the other wire is copper with a copper bolt attached to it or I use a cobalt rod that is broken. That works best and I throw it in the cooler lunch box and attach the wires to a battery charger. It will also take ALL of the rust off no matter how bad it is. I can assume it would bring the tank to new condition. It really does work. In a gas tank I think I would use vinyl hose to go in the tank so the wires do not touch each other that is important to not cross the wires. Or as the ghostbusters say do not cross the stream it may be dangerous. LOL

mrc_builds do you neutralize the tank after removing vinegar? Or just clean with alcohol and dry?
@mrcbuilds
@mrcbuilds 2 года назад
I have done it a couple different ways, I like pour 1/2 out, add 1/2 box baking soda, swish, rise with warm water, dry with heat gun or compressed air

Awesome thanks!! Just did my tank, you mentioned painting the underside of the cap to prevent rust from starting there as mine has, what paint do you use that works with gasoline?

How long can/should you leave the vinegar in the tank? I’ve been given another tank for my bike but it is definitely got more rust but still seems structurally intact. Will a couple of days ruin the metal?
@mrcbuilds
@mrcbuilds 6 месяцев назад
No sir, i have left it in a couple days no issue. The real key to vinegar is pour half out and then neutralize it with baking soda then rinse with diesel. Careful the baking soda will cause it to foam!.

@@mrcbuildsok will the diesel affect this caswell lining in your opinion. I followed this vid on my last tank. I don’t seem to remember this step but it was a while back.
@mrcbuilds
@mrcbuilds 6 месяцев назад
I would not rinse with diesel, if your using a liner. The diesel rise only if your just cleaning the tank and not lining it.

@@mrcbuilds ok thanks. I intend to stick withe same process as you did in the video. Just with a little longer soak time with the vinegar.

Is there any level of rust that is acceptable? I have a bit of rust in my 84. The petcock filter is orange with I assume is rust.
@mrcbuilds

Its just a matter of time before it makes it in the carb. Run double filters inline until you can seal the tank.
