The truth about the M2 MacBook Air and is it enough for a professional in an office environment or a student? I know that I've pushed this new M2 with video editing, however is this the best use case for this new device from Apple?
Is the slower SSD (NAND) noticeable on the base model? Is there enough unified memory (RAM) to get the things done that you need done? In this review of a real world use case I want to share these thoughts to help you make that buying decision.

well articulated, love this video. on a side note, i find it so ironic that not so long ago, everyone and their mother was lauding apple with the release of the m1 mba, and today seemingly everyone is crucifying them for the m2 mba. what a difference an additional $200 makes. tho that being said, nerfing the ssd on the base model and not saying a thing about it was absolutely unforgiveable and distasteful, and apple should be held accountable.

Yeah the M1 still deserves to be in the line up. Day-to-day I don’t notice any “real” performance differences. Not unless I’m benchmarking, but that’s just not where the actual value is (with synthetic benchmarks). It’ll be interesting to see how Apple may continue to walk this back, and if they end up making changes in the current M1 NAND, then that will certainly be a kick in the teeth. Appreciate your time and comment on this.

@thedavidj1996, I am also planning to buy M2 15 inch base model 256 SSD but worrying about slow SSD issue. My use will be basic task just like browsing safari, watching you tube, zoom/skype meeting and MS office work etc. Not for any heavy usage like coding or photo editing. I would like to know whether you have found any lag or thermal throttling while transferring or downloading or uploading docs, photos or video with base model. Does one NAND chip affect the performance in base M2 Air model? Kevin suggested me to upgrade RAM instead of SSD but since you are using the same machine, I would like to know your suggestion. Thanks.

Looking forward to a look a that new review+insight on the MacBook Pro M2 14 inch. Interesting that you noted a pref for Google when you mention a Teams meeting and being in healthcare. Seems that M365 and Microsoft are more prevalent in healthcare. Want I intend to do, just what works for me, is to use Windows365 with my M365 for those workloads and running the Apple / Google apps more locally. We'll see how it goes. LOVE THE SHIRT!!!! How much I like this guy! I don't have a modern Apple computer (just a late 2012 mac mini), but ever since the M1 configurations were announced it annoys the hell out of me how many youtubers (not you) claimed 8GB to be enough for everything or close to that. Increased speed doesn't change capacity and requirements, it doesn't change physics. No matter how good the architecture is. The new Air continues with this, it's a great tool as long as you realize the limitations and don't fall to marketing and/or certain youtubers. Thanks for another great video.

Well said. It is not the issue of whether or not it is "enough". Apple has to be bashed for making a newer gen machine performing slower than the previous gen while charging more and keeping silent about it, and they should be continuously bashed until they are held accountable and stop this evil practice.

Crikey, that is well OTT; "evil practice", really? You need to get out more, there is nothing evil about this. It is Apple doing what they want to do as they are the OEM. You are the consumer, and if you do not like it, then do not buy it! There are far worse stuff going on in the world than a slower SSD especially when no one is forcing it on you! Get over it. @ChrisMitchells_FlyingCameras
@@KevinRossRN for the video editing I do it works perfectly fine. I mostly do personal projects (family stuff with my 3 little girls) on Final Cut that were recorded on my Sony a7siii or a7iv and not that many plugins or luts, just basic 422, 10 bit 4K. I love the 16 inch Max but the M2 is just so easy to use.
@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN Год назад
The M2 is definitely ultraportable. I really love that aspect. And that’s awesome you’re able to edit that 10-bit footage. When I was originally testing the A7siii on the M1 MBA I was pretty floored at how well it performed. For the rough cut of the timeline the M2 definitely works beautifully. I can usually add a LUT and some plug-ins, but then when I do more grading and another LUT added this is when I start to see it’s reluctance 🤣 But if the rumors are true for a 15 inch MBA…oh boy. It’s going to be even tougher. Appreciate you sharing this perspective.

@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN Год назад
Since Apple has really started building these without any option to upgrade it really comes down to having the longevity that you purchase from the beginning. Not to mention that if something breaks, which I’ve had many Mac devices and all but one was nearly perfect as far as how it held up. So it’s definitely an investment from the beginning since the memory and the SSD are non upgradeable, although I still edit on external SSDs anyway. I think the 14 Pro, if you can find it on a deal, which if you’re in the U.S. then they are always on special. But it’s a great machine for the price (on sale that is). These M1 Macs can certainly handle 4K footage as long as the camera codec you’re working with isn’t too complicated. iPhone footage is definitely easy, and even more so with the M2. Do you have a budget in mind?
@mr_red13
@mr_red13 Год назад
@@KevinRossRN ahh I see what you mean. And my budget is under $1400. I was considering a MacBook or a Mac Mini, although I’d have to find an external display (I have a Logitech Keys for Mac keyboard and an MX Master 2S mouse already). @KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN Год назад
The Mac mini has been an incredible investment. I still use it. Hands down the best bang for the buck. Just upgrade the memory. If you went with the MacBook Air whether M1 or M2, either of these should fill the need…but same for the memory. I use the M2 every day, but I don’t really edit on it although for your use you’d be fine. Same with the M1. If you don’t really care about portability then the Mac mini is really hard to beat.

@KevinRossRN, I want to replace my aging intel based MBA 2017 and have shortlisted MBA M2 13 or 15 inch. My use will be official work basic task like web browsing, emails, facebook/zoom meeting, you tube watching, MS office (word, excel, powerpoint), pdf file creation and normal file transfer thru emails etc. I wont need it for coding or photo editing etc but just for normal basic use mentioned above. My question is whether the base model 8/256 GB is enough for me or do I need to upgrade RAM or SSD for MBA M2 due to slow SSD issue. Will appreciate your feedback.
@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 4 месяца назад
I still use this machine daily for those very tasks. I will say that I don’t restart my machine very often, which isn’t really needed in my opinion. However, that being said, I do find myself pushing the limits of the memory with all of those tasks throughout the day. The swap is efficient and I don’t even notice it, but I do have a 1TB SSD in it. One of the reasons I upgraded the internal storage was because I knew I didn’t want to be tethered to an external SSD…and thus far I haven’t ever needed one. The machine will be a massive leap from your 2017 machine. You’ll love it. The question is though, aside from a slower SSD (I don’t think it’s that big of an issue), will you appreciate more space? And as far as the memory, I think you’ll be fine, but again, if this is a machine you’ll keep around for a while, then I also believe the memory is a worthwhile upgrade. In my opinion and use case that is.
@shreyaswalawalkar8066
@shreyaswalawalkar8066 4 месяца назад
@KevinRossRN, thanks for your response. So you are suggesting me to upgrade the RAM instead of SSD. The slower SSD wont be an issue in my case for basic use. Then will upgrade the RAM to 16GB instead of 8GB and keep the SSD at 256GB. Is it ok? But then there wont be any lag while transferring files (word, excel, jpeg, pdf, png) or videos due to one NAND chip in 256 SSD. Btw Have you noticed any heating issue with M2 Air 15 inch? Will appreciate your feedback.
@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 4 месяца назад
@shreyaswalawalkar8066 I would advise adding more memory because you can always add an external SSD if you need to. However, if this is going to be your daily machine, I would consider more storage. I know it doesn’t seem right that Apple should provide more as a base, but honestly, if you can find it in your budget, I’d recommend building the machine that will provide you years of frustration free experiences. I know there are tests out there that show the 8GBs is efficient, but again, I use this thing every day and I do not want the hassle of restarting it or having to close down programs. As far as the 15 inch I’m actually rocking the 13.6 these days, so I don’t have any input on the 15 at this time, although I’ll likely be picking one up here in the near future.

@KevinRossRN, I purchased new MacBook Air M2 base model 8/256 version from Apple Authorised Seller yesterday. Since 16/512 or 16/256 was not available at the store so I had no choice to purchase the base model M2. Well just want to know whether it is common issue to have a battery at 0% when I unbox the device and opened up the lid. Generally when we open the lid then the apple logo immediately pop up but in my case the logo didn’t display when the lid was open. But when I plugged in with magsafe then the logo appears in 3-4 seconds. I charged it upto 10% in the store itself. During my previous purchase, I didn’t experience such issue with MacBook. I checked battery capacity which is 100% at its origin capacity. No issues found in diagnostic too. The device was manufactured in September 2023. But still I dont understand the reason for not popping up the Apple logo instantly once the lid open. So just want to confirm whether it is common issue or battery drain or faulty device. I charged my MacBook at home upto 100% but the doubt is still remain in my mind. Should I check with Apple Service Centre? Your input will be appreciated in this matter. Thanks..

@shreyaswalawalkar8066 you’re the second person that’s shared this in the last couple of weeks or so. I’ve never had this issue from an Apple store directly, but it’s possible in an authorized dealer store if the machine has been sitting for awhile. See if you can run it through a cycle or two charged up and use it, then let it drain to check and see if the battery’s condition is as it should be. In the other case where someone shared a similar situation they were saying the battery drained way too fast, especially in sleep mode.

Bought the MBA M2 8/16/512 for $1499 at the educator price and sold the $150 gift card it came with for $100. So all in at $1399. Sounds like a no brainer to me and blows my 2013 MBP away obviously. But no I wouldn't upgrade if I already had the M1.

Well, I have the 14 Max, so it stomps that battery. But the M1 pro would be a bit more of challenge. Day to day the M2 will beat it out because if you’re doing the same things (not heavy workload), then the M1 Pros fans aren’t kicking on and it’s primarily using the efficiency cores.

I have the Mac mini and love that as well. However I think you just answered your own question. If portability is going to be a goal, even if it’s in the future, I would assume it’s in the not so distant future. Therefore the power and portability of the 14 inch will serve you well. You’re not going to find a display as good as the one that’s built into the iMac (not on a budget that is), however there are options out there for an external display that won’t break the bank and serve you quite well.

I’d say that the M2 will give you “more” than $70 worth of features over the M1. Also, the SSD being slower will still be plenty fast for editing. The programs can only read/write so fast, especially on the MBA where the GPU is going to be limited.

Well, I’ve heard all of the complaints against the base model M2 air and well…I decided to go with it in large measure because upgrading it is ghastly expensive! On the other hand, I am coming from an 2020 Intel MacBook Pro base model and I must say the M2 Air base is by itself an amazing upgrade from that. The M2 DOES NOT heat up performing similar tasks like the Intel machine would. I am a happy customer but then my baseline is not the M1 machine (which I could very easily have purchased too, but I preferred the M2). The objections to the base M2 haven’t meant squat to me and my usage. I am a very happy customer. Everybody enjoy their machines!

Students should focus on studies, books, clubs, and friends. Getting a M1 is amazing for uni students. Plus, there's $ to be spent on HUBS, maybe a bag, and of course, APPS. In 12 months, the M2 will be $1000 (there's history of Apple doing this after the big change). Good luck, students. Focus on passing and getting laid. Don't let the tech stuff bother ya.

Yes, the base is fine and the speed although lower than the M1 base, is really moot for most buyers. It will maybe irritate the 5-10% techies that buy the Air for purposes it is not really targeted at, but for those buying the Air M2 the base will be enough. I checked my disk speed during a normal day Office stuff) and it rarely gets above 1Mb/s, usually kb/s speeds, so even 1.4Gb/s is pretty much wasted on me. I do not have a work flow where I am running any pro apps and then skipping through tabs constantly every second or so; does anyone really do that (Max Tech)? So, my M2 has had zero slowdowns, though I do monitor RAM due to some websites having bad memory leaks. e.g. RU-vid can in a day have RAM cache topping 1.5GB! So I do purge RAM cache to keep it all running smoothly, and stopping that swap, as that will degrade storage cells over time. But for those that insist on running pro apps on a fanless Mac whilst multitasking, then you probably better get 16GB of RAM as you will clearly need it. Do not upgrade the storage instead, as that is totally illogical, unless you need more storage, then get the extra RAM as well. Good video by the way.

Thanks for your time on hanging out with us here. I think the tough “pill” to swallow is the use of average consumer, or the 5-10%. Creators on the platform often get pushback with those terms as it seems we’re insinuating that the average consumer is less than, or doesn’t count. I agree that most aren’t going to even realize these limitations that we (on the platform) create by pushing the machine beyond what it was originally intended. I’ve often found myself in an Apple store because we do corporate buying, and even though most of that happens online, I still pop over to pick up devices and when doing so, I just observe visually and overhear many of the customers in there talking about getting a device that fits the need of “most.” With no question about RAM or SSD, although some will ask about bumping the internal storage as they have little interest in keeping up with an external solution. I also believe there’s this idea that because of the price, it should do so much more for that bump in price. This is just Apple recouping some of those R&D dollars and essentially understanding (as they often do) that there’s a target market, even in this economy. Anyway, a bit of rambling on my part. Again, thanks for your time.

@@KevinRossRN An average consumer is a function of statistics, not meant as demeaning to those falling within that group. It is a way for OEMs to decide what a certain demographic needs, aided by research and customer feedback. The techie community are known as the outliers, and Apple cannot dictate to the smaller group just because they are the loudest. As for the price, this is almost unfair in these times to take a swipe at any supplier, as the world is in an extraordinary economic perfect storm. Apple is no doubt aware of this, hence the M1 Air remaining as the value option. Again consumers decide and Apple has been more than fair here. Thanks for your thoughts and although I feel that this SSD "issue" has been blown out of all proportion, that techie community was always going to go OTT, so was to be expected!

Nail on the head my friend. Agree that this is the metric that Apple is measuring against. And the M1, as tired as everyone may be when it comes to hearing about it, is still very relevant.

Enough vs Better are two different things. I mean, by your logic, iPhone 8 is “enough” for most people for normal use. But if you are spending premium on the latest iPhone, you’d expect it to be “better”. When a new Apple product is released, people expect it to be “better” than what it replaced, especially if it costs 20% more. M2 MBA failed that compared to M1 MBA. Hence the reason people are upset. Had Apple shipped with 2 x 128GB SSDs installed, I suspect we wouldn’t have any of this issue. But they didn’t and that’s greedy.
@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN Год назад
Appreciate you weighing in here. As far as the SSD, since this is the biggest elephant in the room, I think even if it was on par with the M1, there would still be a concern that this a more of a packaging upgrade rather than raw performance. Which is why I stated that the M1 is going to do everything day-to-day that the M2 will do, and indicating that you don’t need me to help justify the price difference because you just want the M2. But on that note of better, this is also where I think consumers will be confused in that M2 must be better than M1. M1 is “old” tech and the M2 being new must be a leap forward, although that is if you take years of the Intel tick tock model in that these performance gains are going to be incremental, at least until 3nm is being offered. But going back to the packaging. Aside from some camera improvements and the packaging, that iPhone 8 (let’s say iPhone SE2 for a better comparison since it’s in the same packaging as the 8)…this device, what’s under that non 120Hz display glass is on par with the day-to-day performance (not synthetic benchmarks) as the 13 Pro. But we may be splitting hairs at this point. The “enough” part was really about stating that for those that were looking for a creative pro machine replacement would likely be disappointed. Time is everything, and for a creative professional you just traded time for packaging, however for a student or corporate/office professional the M1 is going to continue to fly for quite some time, but the M2 as bad as the headlines are is still also very capable for that work. It’s just a matter as to whether the bump in price is justified because this is historically Apple’s pipeline to use hardware that was a cycle or two behind when they were using Intel.
