Today we will learn the truth about the basher RC! Will it survive being upgraded to 8s or will it succumb to bashing on 6s? Is this a good budget alternative to Traxxas XRT or Arrma 8s?

The original Lasernut should’ve had this drivetrain, and this one should have DBXL internals…..facts!
@DoRC
@DoRC Месяц назад
That would be better though of course that would make the price higher on both of them so I can understand why they did what they did. The problem is that the majority of people in the hobby expect a certain level of durability no matter what they're buying especially when they're spending that kind of money and I don't think this is going to reach that level for many people.
@AsurasWrath164
@AsurasWrath164 Месяц назад
@eddytoy9496 totally agree! The tenacity db was the last truck that was really good. Since then they are on a downward spiral: the hammer rey, lasernut, baja rey, now this. They are all way too heavy for their drivetrain and electronics. Either they're too stupid to understand(which I refuse to believe) or are forced by HH to keep the cost down in expense of durability which is a shame as their vehicles look all so good. Would love to have a baja rey 2.0 but as durability is an issue and parts availability in Europe is absolutely terrible, it instantly kills my urge to add one to the fleet. Very sad what HH pulls off in Europe.

As far as bashers go absolutely. Of course this is designed to be a scale rig but I think at least these days everybody's going to expect a certain amount of bashability from anything they buy and I don't think this is going to meet that expectation for a lot of people
@edwinlomonaco6754

@DoRC It's a bit perplexing. I'd imagine the engineers who are responsible for product planning etc had to have known this thing isn't going to hold up well. I'm an Automotive Technician by trade. So I understand sometimes manufacturers release a new model and have an issue with a component in their car. And often the car manufacturer doesn't make the part. So you can't really blame them. And people generally don't understand that. But in cases like this it really looks like they really didn't make any efforts. Just sort of ripped parts off of different cars and made a new one.

Losi makes the most delicate RCs I've ever owned. A relatively light slide into a curb with my DBXL E caused $225 in damage. If that isn't bad enough, I ordered the replacement parts in May, and I still don't have them as of today, July 21st. My Losi SBR 2.0 wasn't delicate, but it's handling was terrible. It flipped onto its lid if you looked at it funny. My Lasernut has been ok, but that's only because I've learned my lesson from the others and baby the hell out of it. The only Losi's that I really love are my Mini B and my Mini T. Not that they're durable or anything-theyre not! My groms are 50x more durable. ALL OF THEM!-but they're so light that jumps aren't too bad. They're a lot of fun, though. I'll take them over my other Losi's. I'm not joking. I mean it.
@RCRoads
@RCRoads Месяц назад
Great idea covering the receiver with a glove finger. I guess you could use a balloon as well. I also like the idea of having a fan to complete the drying process. The Super Lasernut sure looks nice as it's gliding over the terrain. It doesn't perform that well off jumps and probably will break on big jumps. I have ran my 1/10 scale U4 into trees and curbs and it seems to take it quite well. It manages to get over the weeds better than my other 1/10 scale trucks with it's big tires. I own two 1/10 scale Lasernuts that were too cheep to pass up. I figured if one breaks I'll drive the other one. I probably wont dump any parts into either and when they die they will be shelf queens. For now I'm enjoying the heck out of them.

The Super Baja Rey 2.0 is also not a basher. I love mine and it's a monster but it's not made to be driven like a Kraton or Xmaxx. It's in this same category of scale replica as this buggy and the UDR. it's a big heavy rig and when it takes a big heavy tumble stuff will break. Out of the box you have to add a rear chassis brace to the cage to keep it from flexing to much. After that it's good for It's intended use. You can go hard on natural terrain pretty much without issue within reason but if you start hitting ramps or go to a skate park, it won't last long. I love mine but if you want to bash it hard you're much better off with a Mojave. You can treat both the 4s and 6s Mojave however you want and they'll smile and ask for more.

@NUeB_RCFPV Месяц назад
@@boduke9428 I'm not interested in bashing, but the Lasernut seems to be really too weak for it's price. I want to go fast "trophy style", no big jumps, no skate park etc, More like scale driving - I'll put FPV gear *into* the car (that for it needs to be big) to get that feeling as if was actually driving a real car. Do you have any suggestions which brace to take / is a 3D printed good enough?
@boduke9428
@boduke9428 Месяц назад
@@NUeB_RCFPV There are lots of videos on the issue. I use an aluminum set from Scorched RC. You can get metal, carbon fiber, or plastic. I tried carbon fiber but changed to aluminum after seeing a video somewhere where they compared the different types and aluminum really stiffened things up more. I don't think printed would work unless it was from a very resilient material. The spare tires are pretty heavy and cause a lot of force and flex in the cage below them. It's body breaking amounts. That's why I say put them on straight out of the box. After that it's a great truck. Every break I've had on mine was 100% my fault. For your purpose it will be great.

The internals are definitely reminiscent of Arrma, And as this is such a large vehicle, it really should have the "EXB" treatment, like the aluminum chassis braces, and the aluminum tube between the shock towers like the Mojave 6s
@DoRC
@DoRC Месяц назад
They could have done that but unfortunately I don't think it would help. There are some fundamental issues with this platform at this scale that are going to be pretty hard to overcome. The hinge pin size and the design of the arms really aren't up to handling the forces from a nearly 20 lb vehicle with batteries. They just were never designed for that.

@DoRC
@DoRC Месяц назад
@V8chump I'm not sure there is minor as they seem to be. Things like how the arms attached to the chassis are kind of a fundamental problem. The hinge pins aren't big enough and the holes in the arms where they go through aren't strong enough. To make the hinge pins bigger means removing more material from the arms and to add material to the arms you need room where they attach to the chassis to fit that extra material. I'm not saying it's impossible but I think you'd be looking at a serious redesign in order to actually make this thing strong enough to handle the forces that it's nearly 20 lb are going to be putting on it.

They show it banging off of rocks and jumping etc. they use the word extreme multiple times in the description of the car. I definitely didn't expect it to be a super durable basher I just expected it to be a reasonably capable one and I think most people are going to expect that. Anytime you do something like washing a car with a hose it's going to potentially reduce the life of bearings and whatnot but at least in my personal experience I've never really had much trouble with it. The majority of the bearings in the car are at least shielded by something else such as the wheels etc and as long as you don't sit there and directly spray a bearing for 5 minutes It's probably going to be okay. I've been washing cars that exact same way for probably 10 years now and I've never really had any obvious issues from it other than a couple of times when I sprayed down electronics that weren't actually waterproof. That being said living where I do I probably wouldn't be in this hobby if I couldn't wash off my cars so I'd rather have to replace a few bearings here and there then have to clean a car without a hose

Well I have the original 1/9th Scale LaserNut and generally two expected upgrades right off the bat were the ExoTek Top Brace made of Aluminum and Carbon Fiber along with Aluminum chassis braces or else you would bend that chassis as well. So it seems on par there, but all the little fixes you had to do just to get it to run correctly at all...? Thats pretty shitty quality building from Losi/Horizon. My Super Baja Rey 2.0 seems to be indestructible, and I jump the thing like a Kraton and the only damage seems to be in the body and plastic cage snapping and cracking in places. I think if Losi wants to sell this thing for $800, then it needs an aluminum top place and chassis braces at the very least, plus implement the small fixes you did such as O-Rings in the drive cups and washers/bigger screw heads to stop links from popping off. At that point it might be worth it, because remember - this isn't a bashing vehicle. It isn't meant to compete with Kratons or Maxxes, its meant to be a Rock Racer or LIGHT basher. I have NEVER broken anything on my 1/9th scale original LaserNut because I fixed the issues before even driving it with the ExoTek top plate and rebuilding of all 3 diffs with custom shimming. But, I also dont drive it like a Kraton, I drive it as it was intended to be driven.
@DoRC
@DoRC Месяц назад
The chassis reinforcement would be good but that's not going to fix the main problem with this which is that things like the arms and how they attach just aren't strong enough for that kind of weight. And I definitely understand this isn't a hardcore basher but I certainly wasn't hardcore bashing either. I think what I was doing was pretty representative of what they were showing in the video and certainly less than "extreme" which is how they describe it on the website. Ultimately for those that love the way it looks and don't mind it's lack of durability it could be a cool car but I think a lot of people will be disappointed in it just like they were with the original
@wallacengineering8096
@wallacengineering8096 Месяц назад
@@DoRC Ya Im sure this will be a repeat of the original. And ur right, the arms do seem weak and were weak on my 1/9 OG as well. I soaked the entire truck in Muck-Off MO-94 and let it dry for 3 days before driving. It really helps with plastics. MO-94 is basically a modified PTFE coating designed specifically for UTVs and Mountain Bikes and other Off-Road vehicles. As it soaks into plastics and then dries, it softens them up slightly, reducing the chance of a break due to plastics becoming brittle over time. Unlike WD-40, MO-94 also dries to the touch after about 24 hours and doesn't attract dirt or mud. Its almost like a super-slippery clear coat of paint. I now coat every single RC I buy for at least 48 hours before driving it and it makes a noticeable difference in durability on all of them.

Great review, honestly. Thank you very much. Everyone knows that Horizon, especially Losi, have been ripping off their customers for years. The models are scale, look good and they pay a lot in license fees. But technically everything is inferior to the cheapest from China. 1:10 technology is stretched to 1/6, can't hold up. You really have to wonder if anyone there has any professional pride and dignity. Constantly new models, never available, especially in Europe. And after a very short time the models are sold out and there are no more parts. You really shouldn't support the company, Traxxas and Tamiya are examples of how it can be done differently. I think you mean Losi, instead of Horizon altogether. Arrma, Axial, and even Losi make some great and durable rigs that are usually among the lowest priced in category. I can't speak to Europe efforts but once a model is out a few minutes parts are easy to get. Either way, scale stuff is more fragile than regular RC rigs. For that reason. That same crash would total the real vehicle the scale one is based on. It's the same with every manufacturer. Aside from this Super Lasernut the most fragile RC truck I know of is the Traxxas UDR. It'll also usually break every run until you get a ton of money in aftermarket parts. They're both scale accurate looking and driving rigs. 1:1 vehicles aren't made to to bashed and that part doesn't scale. I'm not defending this rig but you can't put every vehicle under the horizon umbrella because of this one. Maybe it's different in the U.S. but Traxxas is the greedy one here. They cost to much and with only a couple exceptions everything they sell is on decades old platforms. Everything is based on a Slash, Maxx, or TRX chassis. They won't spend R&D money for actual new vehicles and are still pushing out brushed electronics and plastic geared servos in premium priced rigs.

I did the chassis bracing for the steering and shock towers just to reinforce stuff because I was gonna be abusing it. If every gear in it stripped today it wouldn't owe me anything. It's got hours and miles of pulling 5 times it's intended weight around on the stock drive train and hasn't flinched once. Most of that has even been using 4s batteries when it's only recommended for 3s. I just have more and bigger 4s to use to weight it down more for better traction. I was afraid of this. Scale accuracy to me means scale durability. That real Lasernut this is based on breaks a lot during competition also. Every vehicle i know that's really scale accurate is among the most fragile. It's not brand dependent on durability, it's scale dependent. The most fragile Traxxas is the UDR. Guess what the 2 have in common? My SBR 2.0 is a great driving truck but it can't bash like either of my 3 Mojave's. They are less scale realistic but much more RC realistic and more durable for it. Losi dropped the ball here and i can't defend them. At this price with so many re used components there's no reason this shouldn't withstand normal scale bashing better than this. I much prefer comically un scale characteristics and more durability on my rigs. It might work well on low speed crawler type rigs but that's about all scale realism is good for.
@DoRC
@DoRC Месяц назад
Yeah maybe though most of the stuff that's problematic is under all the scale looks. I think the big problem here is what platform they chose to put it on and the scale they chose to make it. If they had stuck with the truggy size and made it that scale it probably would have been fine. Of course then they would have been competing against their own 1/10 scale laser nuts which is probably why they didn't do it

@DoRC
@DoRC Месяц назад
This is based on the losi 8ight xe 2.0 race platform. They recently released RTR versions of the race kit that come with electronics but also have some lower specification things like towers ABCD blocks chassis etc. This is a stretched version of that same exact platform

Off topic, but blew my xrt/xmaxx rear diff. Does having super think filled diffs like 1m + where its harder to turn them, in turn make it harder on the gears? or not really. I just bought vivatons and shims this time so I really wanna make it reliable.
@DoRC
@DoRC Месяц назад
In my experience having thick differential fluid does not make the differentials more likely to break. Technically I suppose it could because it has the potential to transmit more energy through the gears into the housing but in practice it's not something I've experienced

I have 3 losi vehicles, 2 of them (Hammer Rey and Mini-T Brushless) are overpriced, half-baked, and under-tuned in various ways, especially steering. Losi is my least favorite of the Horizon brands, but all my Arrma vehicles handle great right out of the box

Anyone else thinking of the team associated MT8? Bigger, heavier… weaker
@DoRC
@DoRC Месяц назад
For sure though most of the problem of the MT-8 was a material selection issue. The materials they were using were just way too brittle. The exact same parts off of the Kaiju are much more durable.
@V8chump

Wow. Idk how much parts are but I bet it’s not very cheap compared to something like the xmaxx which is far far more durable
@DoRC
@DoRC Месяц назад
Well to be fair this is more of a scale vehicle so it does get some consideration for that but I still don't think it meets the minimum requirements for durability these days. As far as parts go it's actually not that bad because it's based on The budget version of a 1/8 scale buggy so the prices aren't too crazy.

too hard? no man, you're not being hard enough! at 800 (900eur here in Europe!!) this thing is a borderline scam! a real joke but i think i can see the logic.. they had the Lasernut license (which i well and truly hope they lose after this bad joke!), and their thought process was "hey, what's the laziest way we can make a Lasernut car by reusing parts we already make? here's an idea! let's take a smaller scale buggy chassis, put longer truggy a arms, bigger tires and call it a day! look at it! it looks just like the lasernut!" at this point, i'd rather give my money to Trax"i'm gonna sue my mother so she can't compete with me"xas than Horizon [other than Arrma], who seems to be stuck in the 90ies with their designs, while everyone has moved on to greater, better stuff (just look at the micro, 1/24th crawler scene they pretty much created: while everyone is running circles around their ancient designs, they're releasing 'refreshes' with new colors and shocks, not fixing a single thing people were complaining about) yes, i'm supremely pissed they ruined this great car (mostly because i have a very, very soft spot for Ultra 4 which was nearly never well represented in this hobby for some unfathomable reason. just superficial aesthetics) i'd almost buy this used (and likely broken, lol) as a shelf queen, but i don't have shelves the size of the USS Enterprise
@DoRC

Yeah I think it almost would have been better if they had just made it 1/8 scale. It would have probably been pretty decent on that chassis at that size.

@@DoRC they already made the 1/8 scale, just in typical Losi fashion, they called it 1/10th [because, in typical Losi fashion, they used a 1/10th chassis] :) seriously, take the SuperLasernut measurements, multiply by 6 and divide by 8 and you're nearly spot on with the previous Lasernut i guess the most shocking part of the SuperLasernut is that for once Losi got the scale right :D
