Rudy Gobert has played like the defensive player of the year this season and has led the Minnesota Timberwolves to the number one seed in the West so far over the Denver Nuggets, Phoenix Suns, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Lakers, and others. He, Anthony Edwards, KAT, and others are on the rise and dominating the Western Conference after many said trading for him was "the worst trade of all time". Let's talk about it.

I'm so happy that Rudy is finally getting noticed for his incredible impact on D so far this season. It took him awhile to settle in here, but it feels great to see him play at a level I've always known he was capable of. The wolves did overpay for him, but that by no means makes him a bad player. His offense is limited but very efficient, and his impact on the defensive end is driving this team so far this year

Gobert is not only a great defender, and a great overall player, but he's incredibly consistent. Even on a not so great night, he seems to come through with something like a 4/5 from the field, 9 rebounds and a block or two. He got quite a bit of crap last year for dropping bullet passes from D'Lo, but it sounds like their approach as of late has been to work on their touch passing, and that D'Lo was a bit hard headed about passing, and thought of it as Rudy's fault that he couldn't catch passes, which is a statement of what level of maturity he has. He's been great this year, he defends the perimeter too, he doesn't get enough credit for that, but when he's really on, he's out on the perimeter causing problems, getting into guys' faces.

Recency bias is a crazy problem in sports fandom and media, and it’s especially one when talking about major trades. This is the worst trade in NBA history? Really? This doesn’t hold a candle to the Cavaliers trading their 1982 first round pick that went on to be first overall and was used by the Lakers to select James Worthy.

I am glad to see both Donovan last year and this year Rudy showing just how good that they were in Utah. Gobert for many years was the reason the Utah Jazz had a good defense. When Gobert has help on the defensive side the team will be a top 5 defense. I had the pleasure of watching this guy grow from a no name G leaguer to a 3 time DOPY. He does it the way the youtubers are pointing out. I do think that Rudy needed last years back step to understand where and how to impact the defense for the TWolves.

This is a good trade. The Wolves were not going anywhere before the trade. Gobert is a great defensive player . It allows Towns to play power forward. That's what he is. Getting Alexander- walker was big also. Anther great defender. The draft picks they gave up are late first round picks. Giving up DLO was an improvement. He didn't play defense and he didn't try hard all the time. Vanderbilt was easily replaceable. Beasley wasn't going to re-sign here anyways. The Wolves have a team that now plays very good defense. They all play hard now. Towns , Edwards, Conley and Gobert are the leaders. They push each other. Like they should. And, they all want to be here. That's why Towns, McDaniels and Reid all signed new contracts. By the way . They have a very good coach

Jazz fan. I’m not mad at the haul we got for Gobert, but I always thought it would have been worth while to trade Mitchell and get some good 3 and D wings (at least one borderline all star like Mikel bridges at the time). Gobert tries 100% of the time. Mitchell gives up on defense. Gobert has the mentality of a winner and I always knew it was not Rudy’s fault for the jazz failing

It’s crazy how last year everyone viewed Mitchell’s situation on the Cavs as the way better one compared to Goberts and therefor he must’ve been the most important player on the Jazz during that time and now it’s almost like that’s completely flipped where Goberts in a much better situation this year as the 1 seed and Mitchell on the Cavs is not bad but I don’t think as hyped as people first expected

Compare the trade based on the teams right now and the Wolves won the trade. Beverley, Vando, and Beasley aren’t with the Jazz anymore. Bolmaro is a non factor. Kessler regressed from his rookie season. Jazz lost Donovan Mitchell. The first round picks they received will be late picks that probably won’t even pan out. It’s about winning now and the Wolves are doing that. LET’S GO WOLVES! 🐜🐺🐺🐺🐺

It looks like Gobert took a page from Brook Lopez' defensive improvement from last season. Lopez was suddenly not just a drop coverage guy, getting out to shooters and recovering, playing a unique brand of hedging. Gobert has made a similar improvement, as that biggest weakness that was exposed in Utah seems to have vanished. Lopez got some DPOY noise last season, despite his glaring weakness on the boards. Gobert doesn't have that same weakness. The DPOY race is Gobert's to lose, with Davis not too far behind.

Beside the sheer stats, which are pretty good, Rudy brings a lot more for the team especially on defense but also on offense. IMO he is one of the most valuable player without the ball in his hand. Which is great to build a team around especially when you have players like KAT and Ant that like to have the ball. It makes way more sense to build a team around Gobert than to pile ball eaters like the Clippers do.

i think they are a good to great team and maybe the best wolves team of all time, but if they are contenders i dont know, the west is hard and winning against healthy nuggets is tough for everyone, but if gobert can limit jokic even in the playoffs they maybe have a chance. but its not only the nuggets, okc is very good this year, even though really young, so they might struggle in the playoffs. the clippers look fantastic as of late, its hard to predict, if the wolves are really contenders. but i will be fun to find out :)

Playing a Utah people always sleep on them, now playing in Minnesota. People always sleep on them but fuck what the other people say. Rudy is nice. Three time defensive player the year about four. It’s funny people act like defense is not a part of basketball or something and it doesn’t contribute toward winning by the people that played basketball they know what it is. Rudy brings an attitude about defense. He makes other people want to play defense. People know that Rudy defensive wizard. Mitchell Robinson, Clint Caphela please take notes. Y’all got the same potential but Rudy wants it more that’s why his teams are always in the playoffs low-key with that being said I wish they would’ve been able to keep Pat Beverly, but in hindsight, the Rudy trade was a great success. He is the biggest reason they’re in this position right now.

Unfortunately for them if they don't win a title I think the trade is a loss, because Walker Kessler is gonna be a very solid/good interior defender for the length of career, after already finishing in the upper echelon of blocks per game last season as a rookie, and they gave up so many other draft picks, while also having Rudy making a ton of money. Kess and those picks coulda very easily been a better way for long term success along side Edwards in the future. If they don't win a title with Rudy, they're likely gonna be pretty rough on the tail end of this thing because of the lack of picks. If they didn't give up so much and/or his contract wasn't so expensive this wouldn't be the case, but all things considered I think it's pretty much title or bust for this trade to be considered a win for them

A bird in the hand is worth two in a bush... The wolves might not win a championship with Rudy. But do not underestimate the importance for guys like Ant or J-Mac to be every year in the playoffs and may be to access to the (conference) finals, especially in a franchise where it happened one time in 20 years. They may not win the chip, but at least they tried instead of eternal rebuild on promising (and often deceiving) first round picks.

For everyone else, those first-round picks represent the league's future stars and journeymen, all available on team-friendly contracts.
