Want to know the truth?? Here you go: Subaru WRX, its zippy, fun to drive, mods are expensive, eats gas like a V8, best AWD, head gaskets can go out if you mod it too much, overall, best car I've ever owned
Head gasket is a NA problem. New fa20 wrx is actually pretty good on gas compared to the EJ series. Subaru is great if you maintain them and live in a climate with snow. If you’re looking for big power go to a different brand
I’m currently on my second WRX. They’re definitely fun, reliable cars that will get you through just about anything winter in the northern states will throw at you (with some proper snow tires). Just don’t flog them and they’ll be fine. I traded in my modded, tuned 2005 with 140K (to get my 2018) and it never gave me any problems outside of routine maintenance.
Got a 2015 WRX with 93,000 miles and no problems! Except that time when a rat made a nest on the middle of the engine and a shitty oil filter (wasn’t to spec and noticed quickly) it has been a dream! Dunno why many people find Subaru’s shitty🤷🏼♂️ I think it’s because of the teenagers who have no idea what they are doing. I on the other hand chose too keep mine stock, as I have another project car I carefully work on.
I don't disagree. While this wasn't a ton of money, it was a considerable amount once all was said and done. I base the price of things on how many Acura Legends I could have bought, on the upgrade alone, I could have a garage of about 10 Legends.
My review of my 2011 STi: Handles like a dream, incredibly fun to drive daily even if slowly, gas mileage isn't great, but its better than my old wagon, I usually get around 24 highway, 17 city. You can mod these things to hell and back but don't expect to go over 350 crank or so without doing a full engine rebuild. Interior is pretty spartan, but it's comfortable enough. For a sports car, the ride quality is fantastic, with bumps not being too jarring while still having near no body roll. Get this car while you're still young, its the best cheap fun you'll have besides maybe a BRZ
Sold my '02 WRX that I bought new a couple months ago. The car had 208K miles, no issues for the first ten years after that some $$ but for me it was the price of keeping a car 17 years. No mods and adult driven, well some "spirited driving". Replaced with a '05 with 78K miles.
Yup, the 3 gear in those car are just hella fun! Can you say booooooost? Nothing like getting up to 140km in a few heart beats. Do I miss the car? the inner child does but my wallet and drivers license doesn't. Thanks for bringing back some fun times.
Ha you said it bud, 1st through 3rd are absolute anarchy. I hear you on the wallet part but this was my first new car and I would be damned to watch it just go away from me for next to nothing. Don't let that inner child die bro!
I had an ‘06 STI. Bought it for $20,000. All I put on it was a Flowmaster cat-back, and K&N intake. I had to do pads twice, rotors once. Drove it aggressively. Had 33,000mi when I bought it- ended up with 107xxxmi when I sold it. I sold it for $17,000. Best vehicle I’ve owned so far. That includes BMW M, Lexus ISF, Ford F-150, Ford Excursion 7.3 powerstroke.
A non vaped in WRX increases blue book value by 15%, another 5% if there are no Monster stickers or Cobb stickers from that shifter knob they bought that one time.....
I owned the first STI The 2004 model. One of the funnest cars ever and easy to Mod. The real weakness of the EJ25 engine is the cast pistons that start to develop cracks under even mild pre-detonation. After doing some basic stage 1 and 2 mods and driving it pretty hard for about 75k miles. I had a stage 4 engine dropped in with forged internals, a moderate size turbo and tuned on E85. When they pulled apart my old motor, they said it had cracked pistons but it still ran good. That car is solid and a blast…I’m sad I eventually got rid of it.
Fact: Subaru WRX and STI still in production of new models in 2020, whilst the evo died years ago and Mitsubishi might even revive it as an all electric SUV 🤢
@@username8644 and I have a 98 accord with 330k on it. So I know they're reliable. Also own a 2019 type r. And nobody truly knows the reliability of the Type R engine yet. You have to remember it's not the 1990s anymore. It's 2020.
I haven't liked the WRX's since the 22B STi... BUT, I still damn LOVE that boxer engine note... You can tell a WRX a mile away, by just that boxer rhythm and the big fat pistons with not much stroke... Lovely motors.
a wrx hatch i see as a unicorn kudos on the music nice to hear something other than rap on a system. while i don't really care for space wasting subs it was tastefully done.
The hatch looked very rally to me, that's why I had to go with it. I was worried about the sub taking up too much space but a 10 provides so much sound and with banana clips on the back and simple Velcro, it comes out in seconds and can still be loaded like a hatch. Glad you liked it bud
I guess a Subie can be a decent ride - if you upgraded every aspect of the car like this guy did. He still has to live with the crappy interior with all that hard, cheap plastic and doors as solid as a go kart!
This is old but I own a 2008 wrx sedan mods are minimal it goes AEM cold air intake, turbo cat back full exhaust by invidia, BC type R Coilovers, white line suspension sway bars front and back + adjustable end links + rear control arms And finally a tuned ECU running a 93 octane tune by Cobb that supports my intake and exhaust as well engine is stock. I have 128k as of now zero issues I drove it responsibly..if driven right I’ve managed to get 33 MPG if I’m spirited I average 17 MPG MAYBE 20
Altek you got it! Haha, I was into them for a while and only a few gave me issues. My 2013 BRZ engine failure is what ultimately made me give up, but I still had an Impreza winter beater after that 😂 Fun cars, and especially a WRX with 350whp! Now that the engine is built, you can maintain it properly - which is the main problem with used ones. So you’re on the right track for fun 🔥
Back in 2014, I was debating whether to get a 2013 with the old 2.5 liter engine, or wait for the new 2014 model with the new 2.0 FA engine. I figured the extra displacement would be nice, as my 2005 WRX, with a 2.0 engine, was weak and had critical turbo lag. I'm SO glad I waited for the new FA engine. It's hella powerful, gives boost at just 2K, and way more reliable than the flaky FJ 2.5 engines. I do miss the rumble, but I'll take power and reliability of the FA engine any day. I recommend staying away from the STi or any other model with the 2.5 engine, and get the stock WRX with the 2.0 instead. Aside from reliability, it's actually way better and more fun to drive than the bigger engine, too.
It's said that Subaru is still recovering from the tsunami. Their performance engines started to suffer a lot after the flood and they couldn't standardize the 2011-2014 models.
I have a 12" JL Audio subwoofer in a very similar box. I installed it in 2006. I live in the Phoenix Metroplex. It gets really hot here, and even though the car is always in covered parking or my garage I was broken hearted one day in 2012 when I started the car and there was no subwoofer sound. That evening I removed the metal grill (gotta have one) and the "rubbery-foam" ring that fills the gap between the speaker cone and the speaker metal chassis was crumbling! It's like finding your pet has been hit by a car. Luckily JL sells replacements. I had to very carefully scrape off all of the old ring, then glue in the new ring. I've had to do this again since 2012. JL Audio says that the heat here in AZ is just too much. I put a thermometer into the trunk and even though it as in covered parking in July it was 154 degrees in the trunk.
Bought a 2020 outback and the battery died and car broke down. Common problem for new Outback’s, crappy batteries. Would not take a charge. Replaced the battery so we could drive the car ASAP. Subaru would not compensate for the battery, despite a 3 year warranty. I guess they prefer you to drop your plans for the day, call a tow truck, wait for them to repair it, then drive back home later that night.
Get a fitted box for the trunk. Looks like something a high school kid would do. Impressive build list though. I’m originally from Poughkeepsie, just across the river.
This is very interesting, and nicely done Alex but it seems to me that an important lesson is one that Scotty talks about all the time. Car companies have no problem selling cars that are very poorly and hastily engineered and not based on extensive real world testing. An engine that self contaminates? Whatever happened to running a prototype engine for months on a test stand, perhaps until failure, and looking at every part under a microscope? My suspicion is that testing is mostly "virtual" these days. Are you listening Boeing?
Glad you liked the video. I completely agree with you. Much like tech these days, it seems we're all the beta testers that tell engineers what's wrong instead of them engineering and testing something right the first time. Sometimes I think it's a simple as them saving a bit on the bottom line by changing a part out with a slightly cheaper one and just hoping the car lasts long enough so it's not the manufacturers problem once it does break. Either way, I always have my trusty 30 year old cars on hand if this lets me down.
All that money and he plays a tune that simply blasts out sound. If you wanna test it, play a darn well recorded acoustic sound where notes and clarity matter. I remember the old days when people would say "check out this awesome sound system" followed by putting on a migraine inducing group like Foghat. ;)
I had a ‘16 wrx with the FA20DIT engine mated to a 6 sp mt. Cobb ap, J pipe, cat back, custom tune. The thing was a beast!!! Haven’t heard to many bad things about that engine or trans, just weak clutch and watch out if you go E85.
I had a white one just like that. I named her Ice Princess. I love having her but I guess me and her never meant to be. She keeps breaking up on me. 2 clutch replacement and an engine in one year. I tried. I tried taken care of her. She so unpredictable. But the joy she brings. Ughhhhh. I'm crying 😭
How did you find this DDH tune shop and how did you know they knew what they were doing? I need to find something in the greater Seattle area. Engine says they are experts, but are they? There are always some scary reviews Ana very unhappy customers! How do I know I would not similar experience?
The people walking their dogs down the sidewalk behind Scotty whip their heads around when Scotty yells something about Chrysler and starts waving his arms
I've owned Legacy for about 2 years now, 1998 production model, but 2002 facelift. Never been head gasket serviced, and no major engine repairs, just a simple oil and oil filter change. And a coolant too. 260k km and same head gaskets Now it's the question to all Subaru owners, did your head gaskets blow?
I think the head gasket thing was a problem with older Imprezas, but it did give Subaru a bad rep, as you can see and rightfully so. I don't think any turbo models had that issue. Then again my issue want much better than a bad head gasket as we can see.
