Have you heard of Montessori themed shelves? What are Montessori themed shelves and do you even need themed shelves for your Montessori playroom? The answer, as always, depends on your child and your Montessori at home journey. Are you a Montessori school or a Montessori homeschool or simply a Montessori home? As with many aspects of Montessori shared on social media, themed shelves are an interesting addition that has been blown way out of proportion in how it can or should be incorporated in the Montessori home. We will take a look at what Montessori themed shelves are, how themed shelves are actually used in the Montessori class, the ways in which they CAN be helpful in a Montessori home, and how to approach themes in a Montessori home space without overwhelming our child's activities with one singular theme.

Library books are my favorite for exploring a theme/special interest. Otherwise it gets expensive and all lil nicknacks fills the house with clutter. Love the idea of pairing books with activities you already have!

Absolutely! There are some activities that are easy to make to accommodate a special interest to make a book come to life, but it's usually just not very realistic to have enough space for the stuff you'd need for constant themed shelves.

@@melody_shmelody and yet another reason having just some of the themes in a class makes so much more sense than the home! Those items are acquired over the years and then reside in storage right in the class. Not in a carved out shelf in the closet under the stairs 😅

I love that you remind us that the Montessori method was designed for the classroom. I think it’s easy to forget that and get carried away with replicating it at home- worrying about doing it just right- when, really, our homes don’t have to have everything a Montessori classroom has in order to be Montessori. :) I always appreciate this perspective. In all the buzz of fun-looking activities and aesthetically pleasing shelves, I sometimes forget what’s most important: to follow my child 😅

Definitely understand that feeling. Stella has been very much so leading the way the past few months with exactly what she wants and it has been very little shelf work. So I'm thinking my next video will address even more if the learning opportunities our kids can have even without shelf work!

This was great! I definitely just fall under the Montessori home and don’t worry about being my son’s school. And I love adding books to activities! I feel like kids really enjoy reading about a subject and then doing an activity on that same subject!
