Not related to their sustainability but trader joes has joined starbucks and spaceX in lealgal action to have the National Labor Relations Board declared unconstitutional which could have adverse effect on workers rights I apologize for the unrelated digression

Trader Joe's was started in Southern California in late 60s and was sold to the Aldi in the late 70s. My mom remembers my grandma shopping at the original store. I think the stores were different back then and weren't selling as much of their braided products.

As a weekly aldi shopper, I hate shopping at trader joes for weekly groceries. A fun splurge for gluten free snacks is nice on occasion but the layout and marketing is SO overwhelming for my autism. It's busy, it's loud, and it feels like it's trying too hard to get you to buy stuff and stay longer. Aldi has changed their isle layout exactly once in my almost 26 years of life and that was so that nearly every store has the same layout. I can literally organize my grocery list so that it is in order of how I will find it in the store. It's minimalist with staples and a couple of fun things sprinkled in, and it has a very easy to read, easy to see marketing style. Trader joes' marketing feels it's insecure about whether or not you'll come back so it needs to bombard you with novel products for you to buy. Aldi is the minimalist that is confident in itself and knows that their consumers will return week after week.

I'm with you! I absolutely loath shopping. Sprouts is my favorite too so I would love to learn more about them. The only thing I dislike is how expensive they are. I find the same products on Vitacost a lot cheaper especially when i get 20% off. But, then I have to have it shipped. I never liked Trader Joes. Been in there maybe twice. Aldi is another that I find a bit odd in terms of layout. I used to shop there when I lived in IL and also in England, UK. We now have them in AZ. I shopped there once lol. At that time, they didn't carry much vegan or organic but maybe that's changed. They are the same in both countries just different products. These are great learning videos. Thanks for taking the time to make them 😊❤

I live in a large city and, compared to traditional grocery stores, it's so easy to get in and out of Trader Joe's with what you need quickly (they don't sell everything, but they do sell all the most basic staples). I usually come out of Trader Joe's with less than $100 of groceries, which is impossible at Krogers or Safeway/Albertsons stores.
@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist

that is very fair! pros and cons to every store!

Love this video style. Thanks for sharing! As a regular TJs shopper, I would say that you eventually habituate to where things are in the store and the chaotic shelving is not a big deal. I personally love the TJ store name brands and the fact that I never have to choose between 18 different brands of the same cookies or flour or toilet paper. I find this less overwhelming than traditional grocery stores because they are smaller and carry less products, which to me, is less of decision fatigue. I can get the basics plus fun vegan options way cheaper than I can get vegan staples at any other local grocery store here in Ohio. And their produce quality seems to be better than most of the huge grocery stores in my area. The plastic waste is super annoying. For a while I did collect, wash, dry and save up all my plastic films to take them to big box stores that had plastic film recycling but it was overwhelming to try to deal with that much specialty recycling. If Trader Joes had their own take back program for their packaging I would feel better about it but reducing the unnecessary plastic is obviously the best solution.
@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist
@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist 17 дней назад
I'm sure it gets better for sure! it's sooo annoying to seek out special recycling programs for thin plastics! Wouldn't that be nice if they had their own? UGH!

As a regular consumer, I looooove Trader Joe's. Every shopping trip feels like a cozy adventure, an opportunity to discover new snacks. As an eco-friendly shopper, it makes me very sad 😢 a lot of their food brands are delicious, but I can't stand throwing out all of that PLASTIC 💔 makes those paper bags look wayyy less cool 👎

Omg amazing video! As someone whose shopped on and off at TJs my entire life, it was so fascinating to see your reaction going there for the first time, especially through a sustainability lens haha!! As a plant-based girly, my typical TJs haul is canned beans, tofu, tempeh, hummus & vegan sauces (they have vegan pesto!), carton of plant-based milk, bananas, and maybe a jar of sauce. I've found that these very very basic vegan staples are about half the price of the same items in other grocery stores in my area, so it's nice to save money in that way. But unfortunately, as you mentioned, the selection is super limited and there's just so much plastic. I usually supplement shopping at TJs with other places, like bulk stores for snacks, farmers markets for produce, etc. So it's pretty inconvenient to shop at multiple places for different items, and that's not realistic for most people. I have noticed that they offer compostable produce bags at my local TJs now, which is nice and something different than other grocery stores in my area. I hadn't thought about the freezers being constantly open and how much more energy they're using - thanks for pointing that out! It would be so interesting to know the data on energy usage for that and how it compares to the average grocery store. Also, it would be interesting to just know what the carbon footprint of all these groceries store are in general! I totally agree with you that they're not reporting enough. Hopefully that changes over time. Overall this video was an incredibly insightful and I learned so much! ♻

I’m reading a lot of misinformation regarding the origin of the name, Aldi split into the two stores because one of the brothers wanted to sell cigarettes the other did not (in Germany c. 1950), so they separated into Aldi North and South. When they came to the United States due to copyright laws two business cannot have the same name so they remained Aldi and changed the name to Trader Joe’s.
@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist
@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist 18 дней назад
curious! I don't think they changed the name to TJ's, TJ's was it's own store before being bought by Aldi. If this is wrong I'd love to see your sources

Interesting hearing you talk about feeling overwhelmed at TJ's! I have the opposite experience; I prefer to shop there vs the bigger stores because the amount of options at regular grocery stores feels overwhelming, whereas at TJ I have fewer decisions to make and it feels like a more calming experience. I'd never even noticed their aisles aren't labeled until you mentioned it. Thank you for sharing your findings, I always appreciate these deep dives!

Here’s the deal with Trader Joe’s, I go there and my grocery bill is significantly less for my staples, (I don’t buy processed packaged stuff just Whole Foods) for example, Trader Joe’s tahini and coconut oil is cheaper than anywhere else. All the veg is cheaper too. Price is a barrier for some folks and being “zero waste”

I rarely shop at Trader Joe's but my Mother in Law adores that store. The only thing I like about the store is the mood lighting.... I wish other stores had that. i only buy specific things at TJ's: their facial moisturizing sunscreen (I'm highly touchy about face products in particular, and sunscreens in general. it's a texture thing) and their creamy non-stir peanut butter. sadly, Ralph's (Kroger) is my main go to grocery store, as the west coast doesn't have Meijer (when i lived in Michigan, Meijer was my go to grocery store).

Cool review! Thx! In my area we don’t have Aldi, just TJ’s. I think there is a website that says which company makes which item in the TJ packaging. There are a few other brands, but those seem to be items they sell in very small quantities. As far as staples, we buy a few kinds of nuts there like dry roasted almonds (not salted), walnut halve, & occasionally Brazil nuts. They sell in the quantity we want. Their produce has improved this past 5 years.
@karinhart489

PS: yes, please review Sprouts. Although not in my neighborhood, the ones here are so much easier to get in & get out of that TJ’s, Kroger equivalent, & Whole Foods. Much better pricing, and my BIL likes to buy fish from them, and he has suggested them as a nuts alternative to TJ’s. When I pulled up a USA map of store locations they were spread out along several routes I wanted to take, so I was surprised how many locations they had.

Regarding the question about how something containing less than 20ppm is labeled gluten free, that is the amount that has been statistically proven to not cause an immune reaction in someone with celiac disease. Not sure about people with wheat allergies but that may also be the accepted threshold. Personally as someone with celiac I like TJ’s GF options but there are also a decent amount of their products that are naturally gluten free but don’t have the gf label. I wish they would go ahead and label them as such so I could know for sure I have those safe options.
@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist

I'd love to see a Costco video. Only only reason why I think Costco could work is the 'buying in bulk' factor. I heard in an eco blog awhile ago it's better to buy in bulk. Unsure if it's true across the board but it would be awesome if she knew of someone with a Costco card and tailed along for her video.
