As far as I know - and granted it ain't much - but African wild animals are usually the most aggressive ones, when compared to similar species/subspecies from other continents. Take (for instance) elephants from India and Africa as a comparison. The Indian ones can be approached and - in general - they are quite shy and retire when they see a truck full of men. On some occasions you can even get "in contact" if you have a good guide, with experience and someone who can "read" the animal's behaviour. African ones do not give a damn! If you get too close they'll simply charge you (especially if they have a young one in the herd, they need to protect). They'll even chase after you, and (being also surprisingly fast) if you don't get the hell away quick enough they'll turn your vehicle (with you inside!) into it's most basic components. With "Nile crocs" (i.e: African crocodiles) it's the same thing. They are even more aggressive than Australian "salties" (or so i've read at least).

I used to live on the Zambezi river back in the late 70s, one day we were out fishing below the Vic Falls and hooked into a Tiger of about 5Kg, my mate handled the fish as I pulled it out of the water but as he took the hook out it started flapping like crazy and managed to shoot out of his hands and over his shoulder, as it slid down his back it's tooth/teeth got into his flesh and opened him up like a tripe tomato ,we had to cut the trip short and get back to civilization sharpish to get him stitched up.

I have come to the conclusion that this guy, Jeremy Wade, and the others who roam the earth hunting big fish, should take it easy, explore the area, have some fun, and not even drop a line in until the last day of the trip. It is the only time they catch one anyway. I'm sure they catch them the first hour sometimes, but it doesn't help the story much. I want to see what happens to him for not bringing that village chief the first fish he demanded. Messing with the voodoo can be more dangerous than the biggest Tiger fish.

What an awesome documentary. It went far beyond the Goliath, but I was enthralled by Andy’s quest. Who knows if the shaman helped, but he did catch one after she performed her ritual. I think Andy would agree that the only way to catch one is what happened with the wire line wrapping around the jaw, and the hook serving to keep the line taut. I was hoping he’d catch one of the giant ones, but at least he did catch one and we got to see those teeth! I was worried, though, if he hooked a mammoth, if the canoe was sturdy enough to land it. Mainly, he did a terrific job deducing where their habitat would likely be. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing. That humongous raft looked like a small, floating village at first, but then I saw the two or so structures were rudimentary and looked like places to just get out of the sun. I’m so glad by sheer luck of the draw that I wasn’t born in such a place as the Congo, torn by civil wars, warring factions and corrupt government after corrupt government keeping the people impoverished. A 5.82 average birth rate per female - worldwide average is just 2.4. Bless those people.

LMAO!! So True sir!! Im pretty convinced..that this guy never fished in his life !! He didnt do anything correctly! Iff??? Those fish? had an entire mouth made of aluminum!!? What would you do? I personally would use like a 5 inch shad and hook it with a single hook..like a weedless Bass rig.. and then after the fish hit it? wate about 5 to 10 seconds.before raring into it! In other words...Let him swallow the bait. The throats gonna be way softer......dont you agree?

Amazing stuff just curious he’s the expert I am by no means anywhere near an expert on fishing nor have I ever been to Africa but when you have the fish on the line and you ruined it in as it gets closer to the boat why not just put a net underneath and scoop it up
@duanesamuelson2256
@duanesamuelson2256 2 года назад
Reeled not ruined...(damn autocorrect anyway lol). However for your question: netting the fish is possible but it depends on the size of the catch, what spines (and teeth) might become entangled in the net, and what terrain you are fishing from (boats can be terrain in this case).

Did the Tribal Chief get his fish?
@rpurdy4821
@rpurdy4821 2 года назад
That's exactly what I was thinking. Andy here, promised the chief a tiger fish. After days of failure, he finally lands a good one, then let's it go with no guarantee he will get another one before he runs out of time for his trip. He should have made sure the chief got that first successful fish. It's not a good idea to disrespect tribal chiefs.
@danieltoth3900
@danieltoth3900 2 года назад
@@rpurdy4821 If you recall that was a different part of the river, extremely wide with insanely fast currents when he was fishing off the little island. At the beginning of the next few days, the narrator would start with "Andy decided to go upriver a ways". We did see a variety of different boats/guides. During his weeks of fishing he might have worked his way through many different tribes and all with a new tribal chief. Guarantee you that first day Andy lands a golliath tigerfish, that evening the chief and his family are filling their tummys with tiger fish. But weeks later and possibly 72 miles and 4 territories away when Andy didn't want to kill the object of his lifelong quest anyways....the chief ain't getting $hit!
