People are missing the point of this video. It isn't really about race, but poverty. All the wealthy kids of color in my high school got into big prestigious universities. Most of the other kids of color didn't go to college or went to community college. Most of them were poor. Im Hispanic and grew up from a poor immigrant family and i was one of the 10 kids of color from my high school class that went straight into a university. That is 10 out of about 250 kids of color, excluding the wealthy ones. This happens, because most of the people of color dont come from wealthy families, so people assume its about race when its actually about income.

I can't think of any Ivy League institution that doesn't offer to meet all your demonstrated financial need if they accept you. Unless you're parents are making more than 250k+ a year, you shouldn't be paying 50k per year at an Ivy.
@heyheyaoa

@@HughJazz13 Those from families with a lot of money, or median income of 100k-150k, etc dont get as much help. Either that or you dont have any struggles with poverty, haven't grown up with a troubled household, illness, divorced parents. This is why a lot of people lie on their college transcript so that they dont end up 200k in debt by the time they graduate

It also depends on your extracurricular activities, SAT/ACT scores, background/family/income, teacher's recommendations, and essays. I know a friend who had a perfect GPA and ACT/SAT scores, but he didn't get into the Ivy Leagues cause he wasn't really active/social.

I wonder the same for myself.. Only 3 people from my class were allowed into the game art course, and 4 applied. Three guys and me, the only girl. Their grades were 7, 8, 9 and I got an 8 as well. The guy with a 9 DID NOT make it into the art class but I did. Gender also plays a huge role. We graduated as a group of 27 guys and 3 girls.

US education system explained in one video.
@RobinOrzo
@RobinOrzo 8 лет назад
To a degree I do think it is a cycle that is hard to break- wealth breeds wealth, poverty breeds poverty. It's hard to break these cycles sometimes. If your parents earned masters degrees and went to an Ivy league school chances are you will follow suit because of having the advantaged to afford good education, your parents will probably lay the ground work for wanting you to succeed, pay for SAT prep and things of that nature as mentioned. When you grow up in poverty your priorities may be different from a very young age. Its sad.
@BRBallin1
@BRBallin1 8 лет назад
+RobinOrzo Every family had a generation that was self-made at some point. The generations that followed took advantage of that generation's legacy by continuing it. A bunch of black entertainers today are self-made and grew up in poverty. Now their next-generations will have a huge advantage over the others. So if a family is living in poverty, the younger generation has to take the initiative to succeed without family financial support.
@ohdaUtube

on the flip side Asians are systematically disadvantaged cause they compete with other Asians instead of the general pool.. we're all American kids, we should ask compete as American kids. I agree with affirmative action for reasons you've mentioned but it should be spread out instead of singling one race out
@RobinOrzo
@RobinOrzo 8 лет назад
+BRBallin1 it's absolutely not impossible just harder. I personally grew up in poverty and my priorities in high school were different then a lot of my friends. They didn't have to worry about getting a job to not only pay small things like their cell phone bill, but to help support their household. I didn't grow up with discipline on my education, or a push to go to college like others may have gotten.Those are some of the realities of growing up poor. I did still go to college, it was just a totally different struggle then many my age. It isn't impossible, it just makes it a lot harder.
@BRBallin1
@BRBallin1 8 лет назад
RobinOrzo Totally agree. Also the older generations who ended up being self made have a huge advantage over current generations where their expenses weren't nearly as high as ours are. They didn't have to pay for a lot of things that we pay for because they didn't have them back then.

@BRBallin1
@BRBallin1 8 лет назад
Cons about community college: (1) Inconsistent curriculum (2) Lack of familiarity with the university you transfer to during your 3rd year. (3) Will lose 2 years of time that could've helped you build friendships at university. (4) Cannot do most of your major's coursework until you transfer, so you're stuck with a bunch of math and GE classes for the first 2 years rather than building your knowledge to succeed in your field. It's a great option for summer classes, but a lackluster college experience for the first 2 years. You will save a lot of money and also have a higher chance at going to your first choice since the GPA standards for transfer students is lower than HS students.

Besides colleges and universities, there is only one other industry I can think of that turns away a significant percentage of their potential paying customers. This is night clubs, and it is for the same reason. In both cases, they feel that the experience at a university, or at a night club, depends on what other people you are going interact with while attending, so they only want to admit the right people.

It's the same story in the UK. Different universities have different standards, and Russell group unis (similar to Ivy League) can be pretty ridiculous since you're also buying the right to have their name on your CV. But Cambridge and Oxford? Forget about it. The process is so intense -- involving top grades, essays, their own exams, interviews, and the little detail that you can only apply for Cambridge OR Oxford -- even world-renown humanitarian activist and Nobel Peace prize winner Malala Yousafzai wouldn't have gotten into Oxford by name recognition alone. She suffered through the admissions process like everyone else, and was lucky enough to succeed.

I'm Asian and graduated from a high school with about 30% Asians and got into an Ivy League school (I did take a non traditional route to college though and grew up going up schools from both the inner city and the suburbs so who knows what was important).

I will tell you how it is done in EU. You wanna go to university... you list for exam, you take the exam and X amount of people are passed in. Depending on the course it will be 90-120 people. Now there is no interview process, no racial profiling, no photo. Just the exam, if you do good one exam you have a fair shot of getting in.

I would say it depends on income. If you're low income and you get into a top tier school, it could very well be cheaper to actually attend the 4 year university than the community college. Obviously it doesn't apply for those that aren't low income but can't afford college either, or are not getting to top tier schools, but I just wanted to put that out there.

+Mylou Joores Well this might be true for some european countries like Germany where there aren't huge tuition fees, but when you look at England for example, going to University is still pretty fucking expensive and even with student loans or scholarships a lot of students can't afford it... (of course it isn't as severe as in the US but still...) And when you take a look at France the highschool (collège) you went to pretty much determines to which University you will be allowed to go, so it is very hard to get to the top schools (for example the École Nationale d’Administration) when you live in certain areas. Just wanted to put that out there 😌

Ivies *Pros:* The obvious - good financial aid and support. Ivies want/need you to graduate. If you have high academic goals, these are the best schools to reach them. Better than most state/other schools by far with faculty and resources. *Cons:* A lot of students seem miserable and depressed. These problems are likely worse for poor and minority students. It's not as though those traits disappear on campuses. Note - There are basically two strategies for approaching Ivies. One involves networking with the right peers for career/business insight and opportunities. Your ability to do this is largely predetermined by socioeconomic status. The other involves excelling academically above all else - getting to know the right professors and making the right grades. It's probably best to avoid Ivies if you "just want a job somewhere" that isn't Wall Street, consulting, or academia. N.B. - College is awkwardly placed on the edge of adulthood. If you're behind on the maturation curve, spend a lot of time observing before you engage in certain activities. You may have regrettable experiences if you go too far too fast. College will have a huge impact on the rest of your life. It will change you. Proceed with caution.

Harvard and Yale is really discriminatory. I had a friend that i ran with on the track and cross country team. He was black, had a 4.6 gpa. Took lots of AP classes. Was with lots of other clubs, i think the debate team and my mind is going blank rn. He applied to yale and harvard and was REJECTED. Then he applied to stanford and got in with a full scholarship for free. There was another simlar person who was white at my school. He took more AP classes then you thought was possible. He would teach himself, go to far lengths to take AP test by himself and he appiled to thoses schools and got recjected. That paticular person wasent out going, he was just studious and smart but he got rejected. He had no clubs or anything but he got rejected. He even got recognized by the SAT or ACT thing, i cant remeber for having an insanely high score.

+mewtwomotherfuka A 4.6 weighted GPA is low for Harvard and Yale. I had a 4.7 (3.97 unweighted) and I only took one AP (my point being that with the extra points he got from taking many more AP courses than I did, his GPA should've been higher). It sounds like he was getting a lot of B's in his courses to end up with that weighted GPA. He would've needed straight A's, and Harvard and Yale probably took kids that had them. And anyway, even if he had gotten more A's, he might've been turned away. Harvard and Yale have many more extremely qualified applicants than they can accept. I hate the game, though. He sounds awesome. I had a lot of great friends who didn't get into the colleges of their choice and I felt just as bitter about it. Something's gotta change in college admissions, because barely any of the schools really get to know the kids they accept and reject.
@mewtwomotherfuka
@mewtwomotherfuka 8 лет назад
Vicky M Do you know how gpas work? its called grade point average. Meaning out of 4 years, and 2 semesters EACH year. and 7 classes each semester. Thats 56 possible classes. and out of 56 classes from 4 years he averaged a 4.6. Yes you can account in 1 or two study halls that makes the 56 classes less but sometimes AP classes cuts peoples lunch in half so i doubt he had any free periods. Taking 1 ap class will not get u a 4 year grade point average of 4.7
@mewtwomotherfuka
@mewtwomotherfuka 8 лет назад
Vicky M That being said, sometimes honor classes are weighted, so unless Half of your classes were honor classes, then I an see how the 4.7 came into play. And the scale my school uses is an A from a weighted class equals a 5. B=4 C=3 D=1 F=0. So if he got lots of B's his gpa would be closer to a 4

+MistahF for and undergrad degree in anything worth having ie STEM. all you need is an accredited program because accredited programs are all required to teach the same stuff. The real world doesn't care where you went because after your first job they just look at your work. You've just been brainwashed to think that there actually is a best of the best by the very people who are lining up to take your money. These schools get to be picky because there are so many sheep lining up to go there. Those schools are desirable because of their reputation, and their reputation was built on the quality of their students, so it is in their best interest to choose students who will succeed. Study after study has shown that income and parental involvement determine (more than any other factor) the success of a student. Don't hate the player, you can hate the game, but it benefits you more to play it than complain about it. #truthsux

It amazes me how she seems so shocked by all of this. Like, all this information has been a secret all this time and she's the first person who's stepping out and tell the truth. We've known it this whole time, it's nothing new.

It's all a numbers game. The fact that they are now shredding files goes to show that the school is *not* transparent, and they have something to hide.

Applying to universities is so stressful... that's why I went to a community college first then transferred! Best decision ever - money wise & education wise

A community college is a low tuition(very low tuition compared to university) 2 year plan collge which allows you to get an associates degree.

In the U.S., community colleges are like a second high school - it's a 2 year plan w/ an associates degree. It's a cheaper tuition! Everyone can apply and get accepted. Universities are a 4 year plan w/ a bachelor's degree, and have grad school (masters) etc. They can be very expensive. Also, you have the option of transferring from a community college to a university. :)

Quality education is a right, not a luxury, and should not be treated or priced as one. There are so many changes we need to make in the education system, starting with elementary and public education, to award students the same opportunities, regardless of their identity or background.

Cassie cuppeycake Well, although it is next to impossible to get into an Ivy league school if you are from a poor family, there are tons of others very good institutions with far lesser requirements where poorer kids can graduate from by working hard in highschool (colleges with average sat scores of 1150-1300). Thus, while it is certainly hard, it definetly isn't impossible for anyone who works hard and gets a college education...

I never cared about which college I went to but my high school counselors were all into getting us into 4-year universities. I got accepted to a few even though I BS'd the applications - I knew I couldn't afford them anyway since I'm an AB540 student and my counselors never talked about community college as an option. I realized later they forced me to apply to these 4 year universities because it'd look good on their list of achievements... they didn't care and I knew they didn't but they put so much stress on me instead of letting me just apply to community college. To this day I still hate that I went there.
