The Final Fantasy Vii Versus Strategy Guide is something I noticed that nobody on youtube has reviewed, and for a long time I wondered why this strategy guide was so expensive. So in this video I will be comparing the Official strategy guide to the versus strategy guide. I hope this video answers the question of whether or not you want to add this item to your collection.

[spoilers] The one thing I remember VS guide screwed up majorly was thinking the momento items from killing the optional weapon superbosses was nothing. They can be traded for master materia from Kalm Traveler though.

I still have both of these guides that I bought in 97. Versus is hands down the better one. Sadly I hung the poster and it lasted about ten years before it was trashed :(

A few important things to add. In the Versus guide, as you go through each area it shows a mini-bestiary on the side of the page so you can use it as you go through instead of having to use a bestiary index at the back. Also, the mini-bestiaries include items you can steal, enemy skills, etc. It would even list stealable items in purple if they weren't available yet like if you can steal the weapon now that your character can't buy for another town or two, it has that in bright purple so it jumps out at you. And speaking of enemy skills, there is a comprehensive list of all the enemy skills and where to get them in the versus book right at the very back so it's easy to reference. The official guide wasn't helpful at all when it came to enemy skills.

I owned this when i was 17. It is hands down the holy grail of not only ff7 guides, but ALL guides in the history of gaming. It is also sedimental value at the highest quality. If you ever get the chance to buy it new, damn the cost and buy it!

I love the versus guide. It also had a nice detailed map for the snow area, unlike the one for Brady Games. Special note, The Verses guide apparently used some Japanese FF7 copies. They explained the "Text 0" hounds you find in Coreal Prison. Sorry for my bad English.

considering that has been about 20 years since it was published it was basically out of print maybe it should be public domain now. I think it would be a good idea if somebody went and did some scans of this turned into a PDF for everyone to download free.

Just put 2 up on ebay.. both sold overnight. $80 , $90.. neither contained the poster. Proof that it is worth $100 to some , especially collector's.

And now so many years later, the Brady Strategy guide is pretty much at least a 100 dollars, where you are lucky if you even see for sale the Ultimate guide.

I got this versus guide with FF7 the day/night it came out . i was a little skeptical feeling about it not being official but it was super helpful basically everything you wanted to know

Versus! That's what I had growing up. I'm playing the game again on my phone and found a pdf of the official strategy guide but realized that I wasn't learning any enemy skills like I did before. Just downloaded the Versus and now I can get back to basics. I realized something was wrong when the official guide didn't tell me I could kill Gi with 1 X-Potion. Thx for the review.

I own both those guides. I love the versus one but it does lack 1 or 2 minor item finds. It was only some potion or such but still you want it all from a guide right?

I'm surprised there's no mention that the official guide was chock full of story spoilers. Also, the Versus Guide has two inaccuracies that I think are worth mentioning. First is Chocobuckle, an enemy skill attack. The guide said that it does damage equal to number of escapes multiplied by character's level. In the American version, it's just the number of escapes, but not multiplied at all. Meaning, you must escape 9999 times to use it at full power. My brother listened to the strategy guide for a quick shortcut to power, and was so severely disappointed that he quit playing the game, RPGs altogether, and just about any game with lots of grinding. Second, if I remember right, the Versus Guide said that after beating Emerald Weapon and Ruby Weapon, you receive two items from them: an emerald and a ruby, both of which have no use at all. Those are not what the items are really called in the game, and you could trade them for a trio of Master Materia and a gold chocobo. It is a tremendous shame that the guide overlooked such rewarding information.

This is actually only HALF true. There were actually two different printings. One that says "50+ Secrets you won't find in the official guide" and one that does not. The one that does NOT have the 50+ on it is the one with the inaccuracies. But the 50+ secrets printing actually fixes these inaccuracies. When the initial printing ran it was based on the Japanese version of the game (as unauthorized strategy guides meant they were not given permission by Squaresoft to create it, therefore Square could not give them information) or an early North American beta. The point is that being "unauthorized" meant they weren't playing the final version of the game to get the information. Of course, Versus Books had just started out back then and didn't anticipate how many people would actually buy a strategy guide for Final Fantasy VII. And it became an incredibly popular guide. So they had another printing with more accurate info. This included updating the Ruby and Emerald Weapons, Chocobuckle and actually mentioning the All 7 Fever. I only came across this information because I was remarking about the inaccuracies at one point and a friend of mine said his guide actually gave him the correct info. So we got both of our guides together and compared (I now have both printings for myself). So yeah, if you want the one with the best information you need to actually find the much more rare "50+ Secrets" printing, which, in and of itself, is the collector's edition version of the guide. The paper is heavier, the cover is better (the original printing falls apart ridiculously easy while the more updated "50+ Secrets" edition does not). So yeah. But it's actually relatively easy to find them for a lower price. If you go to Amazon it's going to be a rip off at roughly $80 to $100 bucks. But on ebay I was able to get the more rare collector's edition for just $30 and it was in really good shape.

great review! I had both as a child. Sadly I don't have either one. The official strategy guide was just like any other prima strategy guide. The glue failed in the spine and the pages fell out. I have a favor to ask since you have the strategy guide. Can you look and see if you can find one of the screenshots where they show Clouds name as Smooth? I believe it's in the section that talks about lucky 7's.

I had the official guide growing up and it definitely helped, but I would have been so much happier with the Versus one. I definitely spent more time drawing based of the artwork than i did using the guide! The Versus one wasn't available in the stores near me back then. I had one and let it go a few years ago, sadly. I'll definitely rebuy it if I can find one for a decent price

I found stuff missing from Brady's guide when i was a teen in like 99 or 2000, Red XIII's Behemoth Horn in Shinra HQ disc 2. I thought i was The Ultimate Gamer🤣😎✌

My sister borrowed her Versus guide to a friend and when she got it back all the materia info in the back pages got cut off. Im trying to find a new Versus guide and yes, the price is ridiculous

I have the Versus guide and the reason it's so much better is that it's laid out much better. In fact, because of this book strategy guides are now laid out this way. It gives you all the information when you need it instead of just a chart that you have to sift through. Just look at how much thinner the book is compared to the Official guide. Unofficial guides are almost always better.

I have the Brady games strategy guide. It says the only way to get to the sleeping man is to have the high wind or a gold/ blue chocobo. Going to the sleeping man is how you get mythril, which is how you get Aeri's final limit break. The problem is, she dies by the time you get the high wind. Just found that out. Should have looked on the interment and not followed the guide lol

I recently paid £150 for the Versus Guide + Poster. Well worth it since everyone has gone nuts for stuff like this since the Remake Launch and copies are hard to find. The Official Guide is easy to get on Ebay however

Versus guides were the shit. I had the Resident Evil 2/3 and Baldur's Gate guides as well. They had a ton of hand drawn art and a lot of jokes and way more detail than official guides.

my brady games guide had a switched print between Jessie's reactor picture and the 2nd reactor picture. It frustrated the hell out of me for a day when I was younger because I was too stupid to realize Jessie was standing right there.

Useful comparison! Personally I love owning a physical guide of FF games for several reasons, not least to be able to pick one up and enjoy the artwork of the games again. When I replay them I pick the guides up to review some aspects that I dont have memorized as well. I found there to be a distinct difference in quality between the publishers of the guides however. I own mutiple guides from both 'Brady games' and 'Piggyback' and must say that the former are pretty big disappointments. Piggyback are superior in presentation, included artwork, comprehension, detail, secret side-quests, monster register and more.

Holy shit I've always hated the official strategy guide for not explain certain things. Have probably finished the game three times using the guide, read it in bed, read on the toilet it was my bible as a kid and to see this new better strategy guide made me slap myself in the face for having to miss it, and that poster is so amazing!

I have both, but the Versus guide was always cooler to me. The Versus guide also doesn't spoil the final boss, which would have ruined the epicness of the battle.

I have the versus one. It was well used, and is threatening to fall apart. I got it close to release time, and the info was just laid out so much more logically and conveniently than official... I had to steam it back from a friend who had the official guide.

Now that ff7 is out on consoles again, thought I'd give e eryone a couple tips and save you some money. 1. The versus guide is now free online, just Google and you'll find it. 2. Scribd has a 30 day free trial where you can download magazines, books, and documents. In those documents, the official Brady strategy guides are there in pdf for to be downloaded. (all of them) just make sure you cancel the membership after so you don't get charged at the end of the trial.

Technically you can get unlimited sets...I had a set for each character. Also a lot of the information that was "missing" from the bradygames was there. Even most of the stuff for Ruby Weapon, it only leaves out the W-summon bit.

Versus hands down. Brady Games version not as thorough and was more about fancy looking pages than content. Plus I liked the materia combos in the Versus guide. You will miss things if you try to beat the game using the Brady version.

@Kreenakooree You aren't completely wrong, but you are very confused. You have the fourth HUGE MATERIA which is Bahamut Zero. Both guides covered that, there is no fourth master... you get masters from the huge and that's where you had problems with the terminology.

In the Final Fantasy VIII strategy guide doesn't even cover the final battle with Ultamecia, it just says "Good Luck!" That is so infuriating, i can't even tell you.

I have the official one, and I say it is good but not very structured well, but it had a lot of detail. As for the versus guide, I only have the metal gear solid one and it is very impressive and funny with the author going into deep detail, humor and even facts on the technology in the game, I say versus is worth it IF it was written by the guy who did the MGS guide.

Official Guide all the way! I might be a girl BUT: Mastered the knights of the round Materia, Lv 4 limit break and ultimate weapons for all (inc. aerith before she died) plus the different outcomes of the "dates" at the gold saucer... oh yeah - stable full of gold chocobos..... should i continue? FFVII has many fond memories for me - in fact, I'd say it was a landmark in my life. back to the point: Official guide all the way!!!!! I can't believe I'm a grown up now and still talking FFVII.

For the Great Glacier I use this guy's map on GameFAQs. It's WAY better than both maps in each guide. www.gamefaqs.com/ps/197341-final-fantasy-vii/faqs/58524 The Versus guide definitely shits on the Official though. Even I know far more than the Official which is basically useless.

DO NOT buy the official guide. If you dont want to pay (the overpriced, I admit) $100 for a guide, I suggest to go on gamefaqs. All the walkghrout in there is better then the official one
