In the 4th episode of The Football Files, we’re taking a look back at one of the most horrendous football related crimes ever committed. The murder of Andrés Escobar’s was about a young man, losing his life for an honest mistake. But it was also, and probably more so, about football getting stained with illegal money and a nation’s tumultuous war on drugs.

I think Andres Escobar martyred himself. He knew the whole cartel things behind his country's football. While his foot injury was going worse. Thus the own goal. It shocked Colombia which result in Colombia lost its chance on World Cup and finally his own death, but it also made the cartel couldn't capitalize on Colombian's victory if it's ever happened and finally rallied people against the cartels even more.

I remember a Nigerian national team player recounting one event where a single brave soldier with gun cocked, stopped the other country's home crowd from storming their dressing room and killing them for winning, and how the then Nigerian president (Obasanjo?) further saved their lives by sending a military aircraft to fly the team out of that other African country, in the middle of the night, as it would have been very dangerous for them to try leaving the host country by daybreak, the following day. Thank you for making this in the way you did. I was born in Bogota, Colombia and adopted and came to the states as an infant. I know for a fact that to this day many people do not like or support "nacional" because the team was made with blood money. There are always a lot of arguments online when certain teams play. In addition the Nacional futbol shirt is a prideful thing for Colombians to wear because of the colors and what it represents to us. Nevertheless many Colombians and many south american countries loathe nacional. What happened with Andres is unforgivable, disgusting, and embarrassing.

I knew in those years around 1994 Columbia was a very good powered team. They had a golden generation VALDERRAMA, RINCON, ASPRILLA etc. Watching this video I just learned that Columbia before the 94 world cup was on a 26 game winning streak. I am not surprised. Unfortunately in soccer any team can lose at anytime. I remember when Escobar was shot it was very big news and sent chills down the spine of the soccer world. There is a more specific theory linking Andres' death to gambling. The theory suggests that there was a bet between Colombian gangsters located in Medellin and Cali as to how well Colombia would do. The people in Cali felt that coach Maturana favoured Medellin based players over Cali based players and that consequently the team would do poorly. The people in Medellin felt that the team would do well. Andres was not executed just because his own goal cost the people in Medellin but because it was believed that he had been bribed to throw the game.
@rebeccaforbis2704
@rebeccaforbis2704 Год назад
This happened during a very dark time in Colombia. I will never believe Andres Escobar had any intention other than to play his very best in the World Cup. If you watch the own goal he is trying to block a shot that was on target to another player that almost certainly would have scored. The Goalkeeper would probably not make the save. If he had been paid off, a sliding attempt to tackle or block was unnessary. Just let it go. While Andres is laying on the ground after the goal, you can see how upset he was. He wanted a World Cup win to unite people and make them feel proud. The men that shot him were never brought to justice but paid someone else to take the blame. Andres Escobar should stand as a beacon of hope in times of great adversity and lack of protection by the law. The people of Colombia had him as an example of honor, courage and strenght, to be proud of being Colombian. Descalation and forgivness, education and helping people reenter society built a new Country. There may still be troubled areas, but they are so few compared to the 80's and 90's. What I pray will be the last talks with FARC are taking place. Only in forgiveness can these people be brought back into society. Colombians have made that leap of faith. We should support them and do whatever they request of us to see their dreams come true. Rest in Peace Andres Escobar. You are the spark of hope that helped your country move toward a better tomorrow. AND It is easy to make malicious statements about someone that is dead. Especially as years turn all of those involved in a cold blooded murder into urban legends. Whatever the "reason" for shooting Andrés Escobar in the back, it cannot ever be justified or excused.

I scored an own goal once. I was way far ahead, right wing defender near midfield, and flipped the ball back to our goalie, nice and slow. Header, I believe, my back to the otherwise completely empty zone. Zero risk for virtually any goalie, but ours was so over-active he ran halfway to midfield as soon as he saw the ball coming remotely near his direction, and by that point he had no chance to interrupt an ordinary slow cruise that bounced behind him and slowly trickled into the goal. Some people were mad at first, but I had to say, WTF were you doing nowhere remotely near the goal? And surprisingly I never got any grief for it.

That’s how little those Narco monsters value life and how big their ego and pride! 😢

I do remember both events as well, though I didn't know the exact details of it (which I think remain non certain yet).
