However, it is quite common for Japanese people nowadays to deliberately write words in Katakana which are usually not, for emphatic effect, to be cartoonish or any number of tones, eg. ダメ which is supposed to be 駄目, not unlike how we write in ALL CAPS sometimes.

Notice I'm going to have to butcher YOUR language to get this message across in YOUR language: For the most part, Katakana REALLY (!) is more like writing in "quotation marks" (!) to let the reader know you MEAN something specific, such as a loan word, but not always. It's just a contextual hint, which English LACKS when it steals words for its creole. Where children need to have entire spelling bee tournaments, in asking the question "what's the language of origin?" to get it right. When something is in katakana you just take notice it's more suggestive and probably phonetic, it's as simple as that. The TITLE, of Neon Genensis Evangelion, a proper NAME, was in recent years changed to reflect more the modern times of how people kinda realize the English words a bit better, and not pronounce it like Abraham Lincoln would. Meanwhile Americans are probably arguing if spelling Jesus with an I or J is canon. I'm joking, Americans would blindly trust the tradition where there's no room for change or argument.
