About Simple Little Life:
This channel has sort of turned (inadvertently) into a knife making channel. But the original idea behind what we wanted it to be is this description below:
Videos on our journey to homesteading. With a recent purchase of a little piece of the Alberta prairie, we're looking to sell our nice suburban home in search of a more meaningful life beyond chasing the "American dream" working for some big company and making someone else rich. It's not about the money, it's about getting the most value from the work I do to improving the life of my family.
Some preparedness, DIY, building quality things with your hands, guns, gear, and outdoor exploration.

I would never spend the kind of money that TSPROF is asking for there sharpeners. This sharpener costs $1200.00 in Canada. I can buy 4 Work Sharp® Professional Precision Adjust Knife Sharpeners for the price of the TSPROF sharpeners. I will gladly stick with my Work Sharp® Professional Precision Adjust Knife Sharpener.

You mentioned your liking ceramic stones. I share that. I made 3 ceramics (500/1200/2000) for the K03/EdgePro using stones offered by Idahone. Unfortunately, only one of the stones is an exact fit but they all work. Also, I learned from someone that applying Windex to the ceramic stone greatly reduces the residue on the stone and what is left is easily cleaned off.

So TSPROF K03 or Wicked Edge?
@liliya381
@liliya381 4 года назад
Politely disagree. As you move along the blade edge (blade of any any geometry except for circular) the angle is changing. It is obvious. The smallest angle is at the blade ends, the largest at the blade center. You can easily measure the angle if you can not calculate it. The angle difference for longer rods is not substantial though. No offence please.
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife 4 года назад
I like your disagreement. Very polite, nicely done. I politely counter disagree. Think of the pitch of the roof of a house. The roof gutters representing the edge of the knife. Now run a string from one center point on the roof to various spots on the gutters. Measure the angle perpendicular to the gutter (which is the way you must measure the angle of a bevel of a knife) and the angle is exactly the same no matter where on the roof you measure. The same thing happens with fixed pivot point sharpeners as long as the blade is straight. Does that analogy help out? Again, your manners are excellent and I thank you for that. If all disagreements on the internet were this civil, that would be a beautiful thing. All the best to you. Cheers👍
@DarthKuz
@DarthKuz 4 года назад
@@Simplelittlelife Even if the angle is changing, its just a few degrees. Its not going from 20 to 15 or so. If you look on his knive when hes showing us the edge, the width of the edge is almost completely the same from the ricasso to the tip. If it would change dramaticly then the with of the edge would change.

Simple Little Life the roof analogy is perfect. How people can’t visualize it is beyond me.
@chrisparker3863
@chrisparker3863 4 года назад
@@rnr4204 Because it is false. In his analogy both the string and roof are in the same plane. A better example would be with a flat roof and the string mounted 30ft high on a pole. If you move the string along the edge of the roof. The angle of the string in relation to the roof plane changes as it moves from corner to the middle of the edge and then on to the next corner. Shallowest angle would be when the string is at a corner and the steepest when it on the midpoint.
@rnr4204
@rnr4204 4 года назад
Chris Parker I thought about it and you sir are correct. His analogy would be correct if the roof was cone shaped or what he was sharpening was round. The front part of the blade might be close to the the same due to it being rounded, but the closer to the handle you go the more off it would be. I stand corrected.

You're doing it wrong. (Just kidding!) It's a very expensive sharpening system, otherwise I'd have one. As it is I have the Work Sharp Professional Precision Adjust, along with a few aftermarket addons purchased here and there along with some nice diamond stones. I also have, for my larger knives, some paper wheels (grit and no grit) that I use on a variable-speed (reversed motor) buffer. I do manage to get my knives nice and sharp with what I have, yes, but I do plan to get a TSPROF some day. I think the screws are different sizes since the rear screws are holding a bigger piece of the knife clamp. The front of the clamp is a thinner piece of metal and only requires a smaller screw. If anything they could have used the larger screws for all three.

@travisgeringer7904
@travisgeringer7904 5 лет назад
To prove the angle argument, you could set your camera up on end to either sharpener so the viewing angle shows the triangle between the stone, stand, and blade. By then sharpening a straight blade, the stone would move toward and away from the camera, but keep the same angle with the blade at all times. That would be a good way to depict it for the people that still don't understand...

I did that in a video about 2 years ago 👍

I got my K03 yesterday. When setting it up I came to the conclusion the allen screws on the clamps are different sizes because you want to have both of the allen keys in at the same time. Therefore making it easy to keep the clamps parallel without having to keep moving the allen key. You can turn them at the same time and its way quicker than adjusting the front one, then move the allen key to the other screw, then adjust that one a bit, then go back and check the first one and so on. They use different sized keys so you dont have 2 of the same size. That gives you more options when using these allen wrenches/keys on other things than the TSPROF. Thats Russian thinking 😉 Apologies if this has already been said.

@jerrywormeyhicks7427
@jerrywormeyhicks7427 5 лет назад
@@Simplelittlelife the adjuster for the stop closest to you has the flat piece that stops over the pivot point when it's bumped the spring. If you rotate the rod and put the flat piece on the bottom side when you push the rod in it will sit where you park it, your stone will be facing upwards to add more water or drizzle some detergent on finer stones or will just set there while you're changing stones and wiping off slurry. Regarding the angle: experiment ALWAYS trumps calculation. In this case, the angle gauge on the machine moves when the actual angle to the edge changes -- but you can see (even when the blade curves slightly), that the gauge actually doesn't move; meaning yes, the angle is not changing. It COULD change if the blade curved really radically -- in a very strange edge the blade could curve and come around almost to the point of being right below the pivot, and in that case the sharpening angle would be almost 90 degrees, thereby dulling the edge. But, as long as that gauge doesn't move (and it doesn't in this demonstration) then the angle doesn't change. If it DID change slightly that would only mean that the angle was slightly different on different parts of the blade, and that wouldn't make a noticeable difference. And in fact, if the bevel appears to be the same HEIGHT along the edge, then the angle is substantially the same (as long as blade thickness from the edge remains equal along the length of the blade, which it does in most knives (until you get right at the tip....).

Nice video. The product seems over engineered. If someone absolutely needs this kind of precision then their OCD is a bigger problem than their dull knives. The angle discussion is still valid as other commenters already pointed out; the angle only applies for the distance to the edge you set it for. If this distance changes e.g shortens towards the tip then the angle would increase slightly. Probably not enough to matter but that only proves my first point that this contraption is overengineered. I must be ignorant for believing a stone on the table will do the job just fine..
@njapostol
@njapostol 3 года назад
Stone on the table leaves more room for error. The engineering here is to help people like me who don’t have the patients or inclination to get better at using a stone on a table. That’s what engineering is for, making life easier and solving problems. Nothing wrong with a stone but this product has a place and is designed accordingly.
@RealNikolaj

@@njapostol I dont know. Of course I appreciate the discussion and your point is valid. In my mind we should also not forget to treasure the important tools and how to use them. To understand why this machine is of use then you would need know that knifeedges are made of angles. Now just practice that angle on a straight stone instead is what I'm getting at, is it really that hard? I'm genuinely asking because I have never done it with chefs knives only hobby knives with ok results on cheap old stones.
@Win5Weekly
@Win5Weekly 2 года назад
Time, and consistency...it has nothing to do with OCD. You might be able to get a scary sharp edge on a hand stone every once in a while when you manage to do everything perfect and don't slip up, this however does it every time and in half the time. Time is worth a lot.
5 лет назад

I will start with thanks for a great video. And I am NOT a pro knife sharpener. But I understand the physics of what is happening on the process. 1st I LOVE the way you get frustrated with people not understanding how the angle stays constant on a straight blade. Math is not for everyone. lol 2nd. If you sharpen more from the heal or the knife to the tip and back, instead of into the blade and back out of the blade you will find you get less burr. And probably even a finer edge. Just the physics of the stone on an edge. I have no idea if you really need to start this method with the coarsest stones? Im not that patient so I would probably do the 1st stone like you do as in and out of the blade just to remove more material faster. But as I worked into finer grits I would work across the edge not into it. I hand sharpened a lot of chisels and small knifes by hand. I think my uncle some 45 years ago taught me to go across the blade not into it. Great video. Which I had to coin just to have one. Thanks much. tom

The angle will change on a straight blade. The only time it won’t change is I’d you have a circular blade. Sorry. Just put a long blade and put an iPhone on the rod with the angle measure function. It will become clear to you. It’s simple trigonometry
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife 4 года назад
Not if you measure perpendicular to the blade. Which is obviously how you measure that angle. Nice try but it doesn’t change. Next....

Could you possibly leave a link for the stones you are using I can’t seem to find a nice set for this system. Those look like the perfect length

Are you not loosing more of the stones because you are effectively "cutting" them if you go against the edge, if you came from the body of the knife to the edge you wouldn't be going in to a sharp edge. Might increase the life of them stones

You said that you wished that the Wicked Edge had the rod stops implemented to stop you from scratching the blade or something.. Honestly that confused me because I can't figure out how or why you'd need it.

The whole angle argument is really easy to confirm. Just use the level app on your iphone that shows angle degrees. just keep it parallel to the edge of the blade. The angle of the stone as it touches the edge of the blade will remain on the same plane because not only does the angle of the rod change, but so does the angle of the stone as the rod turns.

That's an over built, way over priced contraption. There a plenty of other sharpening systems that work perfectly well, for a fraction of the price.

Some people like way over built (engineered) and are willing to "overpay". ;-) Personally, I would pay a little more for aesthetics (functionality being equal).
