The first Tudor Queen of England helped to end the Wars of the Roses. Her son, Henry VIII took six Queens during his reign and beheaded two of them. Lady Jane Grey and Mary I both had husbands who claimed the title of King while Elizabeth I avoided the whole matrimonial mess. The Tudor Queens consort and male consorts were:
Elizabeth of York
Catherine of Aragon
Anne Boleyn
J
ane Seymour
Anne of Cleves
Catherine Howard
Catherine Parr
Guildford Dudley
Philip of Spain
Watch the whole series now: / lindsayholiday
The lives of the many Kings and handful of Queens Regnant who have held dominion over the kingdom of England, and later the United Kingdom take center stage in history. But the lives of their spouses and mothers are often relegated to the wings. In this series we will learn the stories of the many Queens Consort and the handful of male consorts who have been at the monarchs’ sides. Through love, hate, adultery and sometimes murder these women and men have played vital roles in the history of England.
I make mini documentaries about women's history and royal history:
Queens of the World: • Queen Marie Antoinette...
A History of... • A History of Childbirt...
Royal History: • A History of Royal Inc...
LGBT Royals: • LGBTQ Royals of the World

I think that Anne of Cleves got the best deal out of all this, despite the embarrassment. She got the status of the King's sister, a castle and a pension while keeping her head and not having to sleep with Henry VIII. Edit: I said "Queen's sister", oops.

Elizabeth of York is one of the most underrated consorts in terms of how important she was to her husband's success. She set an example for how Yorkists should move forward. In unifying the two houses, she made it easier for Henry VII to sell the idea that everyone won with him on the throne. I think it would have made her so sad to know that her son killed off so many of her remaining Plantagenet relatives since her marriage was intended to spare as many lives as possible and end the rift.
@areiaaphrodite
@areiaaphrodite 3 года назад
Thank you! I say this all the time. A lot of people think she was a regular in-the-background silent Queen but she wasn't. She was a good mother and a savy woman in her own right.
@cl5470
@cl5470 3 года назад
@@areiaaphrodite It's easy for the hardships of Elizabeth's life to be overlooked with all the important figures of her day. She was born into a scandalous marriage to begin with. Then her father was chased from his throne and forced into Burgundian exile for a year until he was able to retake the throne and Elizabeth and her siblings lived in a dangerous sanctuary during that period, never knowing if today would be the day they were taken prisoner. When her father did return, he had to be more cutthroat on the throne, leading to Edward being forced to execute his own brother which had to be a difficult time in the family. Then Edward unexpectedly died at age 40, before he could secure the futures of any of his children. Within the year, her other paternal uncle would steal the throne and her two brothers would either die or go missing. Many members of her mother's family would be killed trying to maintain control of the "princes in the tower". It had to bee a very traumatizing time for her. Simultaneously, her uncle Richard had her and her remaining sisters declared bastards. But that didn't stop him from considering a marriage to Elizabeth to shore up his claims. He also forced his nieces to join him at court. I can't imagine what that time period was like for Elizabeth. She had to kiss the rear of the man who she likely believed killed her baby brothers. She even had to make herself emotionally available to him because she knew how valuable she was as a marriage prize. In the minds of many people, Elizabeth was the true heir to the throne and Richard knew it. Just as Elizabeth was resigning herself to her fate as Richard's wife, her mother was working behind the scenes to betroth Elizabeth to a distant cousin she had not met before. Yet another relative who was going to use her rightful claim to steal her throne. And then her world was shaken again when Richard was killed and Henry was made king. Luckily she found a sympathetic and kind man in her hew husband, but she must have been terrified. She was still only a teen. It doesn't surprise me that Elizabeth and Henry were able to find common ground and form a bond of love. They had both been through so much and had nearly lost everything. They worked hard to create a lasting peace because their whole lives had been defined by the blood feuds of their ancestors. But poor Elizabeth was not done suffering. Not even close. She and Henry lost multiple children in infancy and they suffered terribly from the losses. Then the lost their beloved eldest son and heir and the pressure was on for Elizabeth to produce another son. Unfortunately she died in the effort. Elizabeth of York lived a life that was 100% duty bound. The throne was her destiny and her fate and she proved to be more than up for the task. It was easy in that time period for men to create dissension and rebellion, but Elizabeth managed to create what no other figure of her time could which was a lasting peace between the members of her family on both sides. I also love the detail that her granddaughter and namesake would serve a similar role in the religious strife years later. Her granddaughter Elizabeth would bring religious tolerance and her own brand of peace and prosperity.

That's what makes her so tragic. Mary knew that Jane being made queen was not her doing, but Northumberland, her father in law, trying to control the throne, so wanted to leave Jane alone. Sadly, Jane couldn't stop other people and nobles rising up in her name, even if she never wanted the throne or power. Her story really hammers home how noblewomen were just seen as tools for their ambitious male relatives. I think Anne Boleyn's father escaped execution even though he was the one who pushed her to interact with the king.

Henry's trick of disguising himself was an echo of his happier days as Catherine's husband, when he and his men would dress up and "invade" Catherine's rooms. To paraphrase Garrett Mattingly in his bio of Catherine, the ladies were properly terrified, but danced and feasted the robbers instead of calling the guards and were properly shocked and thrilled when the six-foot, red-haired leader of the bunch unmasked.
@jeandehuit5385
@jeandehuit5385 3 года назад
Yes, I think there's a lot of misunderstanding surrounding Anne of Cleves. It was not that Henry found her unattractive *per se;* nor that she found Henry unattractive *per se.* I'm not sure if Henry 'properly' loved any of his wives, but I think he loved the *idea* of the big 3 (Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, & Jane Seymour). Henry also wanted, or perhaps expected, to be loved by his wives in return. He tried, in his own stupid, narcissistic way, to get Anne of Cleves to love him. When the costume trick failed utterly, it confirmed for him every doubt he already had about the marriage & prevented him from going through with it any longer. Henry was never enamored with the idea of Anne of Cleves (mainly b/c of her personality; Henry liked well-educated & 'witty' women. Anne wasn't that well-educated & she didn't have a strong personality like Anne Boleyn did, nor the strength to tell him 'no' like Jane Seymour did). He went along with it for diplomatic reasons & hoped things would work out. They didn't. Henry had a 'type,' but he was also a changeable man (for when he moves on from a women he always goes after someone distinctly different than the person he was with just before). He's a hard figure to square away, b/c he fancies himself a thoughtful & complicated man while also remaining a misogynistic, narcissistic, tyrant. He almost always had well-thought out 'reasons' for what he did, but those reasons were often ex-post-facto justifications for the actions his instincts drove him towards anyway.

@jeandehuit5385
@jeandehuit5385 3 года назад
Henry's affairs were of no importance to state affairs (although Henry FitzRoy's sheer existence helped Henry prove he could father a living son). The affairs of his *wives* on the other hand, had the potential to destabilize the succession; any son born by them could be suspected a bastard & overthrown. Not to mention Henry's pride at being cuckolded. Now, admittedly, of his wives, only Catherine Howard probably cheated on him. The 'evidence' brought against Anne Boleyn was of a particularly manufactured nature. Getting her out of the way had more to do with the king's advisors. They knew Henry wanted to marry Jane Seymour, & they knew giving him an 'out' from his current marriage had the potential to bring with it favor with the king. Henry was a narcissist, but also a thoughtful & complicated man. If he wanted to do something, he would earnestly find a way to make himself believe it. His advisors knew this, & tried to manipulate him to their own ends (typically the advancement of the Protestant religion). Most found it impossible to maintain his favor, changeable as he was.

Well, yes it's disgusting that you are literally marrying YOUR EX-FIANCE'S SON but when Mary was betrothed to Charles she was like 6 and Charles was I think 22. This made it a bit less weirder when Mary and Philip married but Mary was still I think 11 years older. Now this is where things get weird. Let's describe the relationship with Mary and Charles. Mary was Charles' ex-fiance, daughter in law, AND 1st cousin

Mary Queen of Scots was only 11 when Edward VI died, so highly unlikely even if they betrothed, she could have gotten pregnant, he was also very sickly. England and Scotland became united around 50 years later though King James VI of Scotland, Mary's son, becoming Elizabeth I's successor.

Not only did she inherit her mother's stunning beauty, she was also very kind, loving and generous with a heart of gold. Very similar to Princess Diana in my opinion. She United The Houses Of York And Lancaster. She also helped bring the country forward out of the dark ages/medieval era into the modern age. A remarkable, kind and beautiful women who did a lot to help others and the people. She was deeply beloved by her family and the people. She deserves a special place and acknowledgement in history.

Actually, Henry VII proposed to the Catholic Kings that he marry Catherine himself, but they politely refused. Later, Henry VII asked Fernando about the possibility of marrying Juana (Catherine's sister, and Fernando's daughter), who had been widowed of Philip the Handsome. He had met Juana briefly, when a shipwreck on the English coast stranded Philip and Juana there, on their way to Spain after the death of Isabel the Catholic. Juana did not want the marriage.
@janefelix3821
@janefelix3821 3 года назад
Actually Ferdinand did not want the marriage as it would serve limited purpose. Since Henry VII had a living son, any son he would have with Juana would come after Harry, and a daughter would come not only after Harry but his two daughters, Margaret and Mary. Second Henry VII was close to 50 which was getting up there at the time so chances are she would not be a consort very long.
