The Tudor Royal: Why Does Nobody Want This Watch?

A Discussion around the Tudor Royal. Tudor's most recent modern flop that has left many people underwhelmed. Why does nobody want it? From a sturdy build construction to an affordable price point - the finger could point at its design. In an effort to keep up with the current trend of creating an integrated sports watch, Tudor looked to the Rolex Oysterquartz as inspiration and might have overdone it in a few places.

As a 25 y/o living in London and who's favourite brand is Tudor I own both a Royal Date Day Silver dial and BB ceramic, which at my age I am extremely grateful for. I have owned it for a year and I can absolutely say it is a watch for the price that is unchallengable. I completely agree that the watch seems old fashioned in pack shots but on the wrist it's a modern watch undeniably. I can't define why but the feeling of wearing it with a short sleeve outfit is incredible, it feels so special on the wrist. It's just such a cool watch so much so my girlfriend went and bought the ladies size with MOP dial with no influence. I wear to work with a suit and and on the weekend, it covers me on so many occasions. Until you live with it you can't fathom the magic this watch possesses. My final comment is that this is reasonablly well selling watch but it appeals to people who aren't necessarily watch enthusiasts which is why they don't get Internet buzz and I know that they are huge sellers in the asain Market.

Ironically, this watch was originally an east asian market exclusive, however, due to its exceptional popularity Tudor has decided to roll out this collection to more and more retailers in the west. Its definitely a watch better judged in-person. I remember thinking it was hideous at first. Then I saw one irl and tried it on, and I was positively shocked. Its georgous. In-hand all the details just work. I loved it so much I ordered one for myself!

I think it’s an amazing watch and was so close to choosing the 38mm blue for my wedding. Also I’m suprised it’s not popular as it was one of the waiting list watches. I actually have no idea why this wouldn’t be popular especially as a first luxury watch. Maybe it will have it’s time to shine one day.

Been looking at the Tudor Royal 38mm after dismissing it for an older Prince Date or OP Date as the idea of getting a luxury integrated bracelet Tudor for less money than either of those go for used really appeals. Really looks fantastic in the flesh or even videos and the product photos do not do it favours at all.

Keep in mind that if the Royal feels like a sales flop in the West, that’s might be due to the fact that it wasn’t primarily designed for this market. It was designed primarily for the East Asian market. I feel like the Royal would be the perfect platform from which Tudor could launch a high accuracy, mechanically-based quartz movement, akin to the Rolex Oysterquartz. Alternatively, with two hands and a solar movement, it would be a fantastic competitor to a ladies’ Omega Constellation.

Bought one myself a month ago - and I wouldn't say "nobody wants this watch." The version I bought - day/date black dial, no diamonds - was rarely in stock on Jomashop and currently is not in stock. I periodically checked Jomashop for half a year before I found it in stock and bought it, for a great price of around $2500.

I adore the 38mm in blue around 2 years ago. I bought it as my wedding watch. I tend to wear it a few days a month. The watch in 38mm has a lot versatility. It looks great in a suit and you can wear it with jeans and T-shirt. It gets the odd compliment because it’s “rare” in the wild. I adore the size, and the size got me into a Zenith Chronosport original 38mm. I use to wear divers at 41-44m. It’s also about 38mm and 60-70s design for me. All by accident. Excellent videos as always dude.

I love my 41mm with the silver dial. It was the perfect watch on my vacation in the Bahamas. For me I wear this watch for business meetings under the cuff, parties, Church, and sometimes to work. It makes a statement in a big way, but the more you look at it and then wear it, other watches start to feel boring. I also like the Day-Date by Rolex and am partial to dressier styles though.

I have the 2 tone 41mm with black dial. It really blossoms as you wear it. I dig the aesthetic but your points are certainly valid. I just immediately thought it was way cool. The links in the bracelet are gold capped though, correct? I have a 1926 and I know the rose gold is not all solid. I believe the bezel is solid rose gold, but I think the bracelet is capped, if I recall correctly. I was really close to grabbing the Royal instead of the 1926, but I just found the 1926 to be a bit more classic. I may end up turning around and buying the Royal too. I love how similar it is to the Rolex Oysterquartz, and I think that someday in the distant future, this will be a highly desirable timepiece.

I recently was in conversation with the manager of a very large AD here in the UK - to my surprise, they told me that the Royal is by far one of the most popular models in the Tudor catalogue with “normal” customers (i.e. non-watch nerds).
@ID-Guy
@ID-Guy Год назад
Fascinating. Us nerds really are in a bubble and don't take regular buyers into account 😆 It's the affordability aspect that I'm sure many love too. Maybe Tudor will continue to expand the line? Crazy how we instantly think Black Bay is THE watch 🥃
@dominicrusho
@dominicrusho Год назад
@@ID-Guy Indeed - I think it’s likely a combination of price and the fact that you’ll find a healthy section of Royals in the window of pretty much every AD across the land. Most sane people have no time for waiting lists!

I think the Roman numerals are the most common notable and hence clashing elements in the design after the bezel... In my opinion a Tudor Royal version with markers instead of roman numerals or numbers could be a very attractive design. As an American in East Asia, I see Tudor advertised around the city (Shanghai and Hong Kong) often. I came across the Royal recently. I think the integrated style, 70s influence, day/date, and roman numerals are a bit old timey but its precisely what drew me to it. And like you said, on the gray market, I've seen white/silver dials at the $1000 mark. I think this can become my new daily driver.

@@ID-Guy Its really down to the cultural nuances. In Asia, we aren't as "progressive", and there's a stronger value mindset. So things like yellow gold are extremely popular compared to steel/RG/WG, the low entry price into luxury brands also do extremely well. Additionally we typically do not shy away from unique or loud designs because in most countries where people can afford these watches, robberies rates are quite low relative to eu/us. I actually love this watch in the 38mm variant, which, btw is an excellent and under-offered size in the category of "affordable" integrated bracelet sport watches. I've been saying all along that the value here is off the charts and that Tudor's nod to the Oysterquartz is actually a good thing. Who else, if not Tudor has the right to make that claim anyway? Yes, it's a bit of a mess with the engine turned bezel (but again, who if not Tudor - Rolex isn't even offering it these days) and the Roman numerals - but here is where, if they do lean in, they have options. Tudor should blow open the dial offerings much like Rolex has done with the Datejust over the decades: concentric, anyone? How about circularly arrayed Arabic numerals? As some have said - its the roman numerals for me that date the design in an undeseriable way and make it too busy. The alpine eagle used a more modern typography. Agree that the quality of the watch is fantastic for the price

ive owned the 41mm black dial for a year and i can confidently say ive loved wearing it. its sporty and its blingy. its bezel actually reflects light quite a lot, a smooth bezel option (which a lot of ppl THINK would look better on this model) would make this model less tasteful. One of my favourite aspect of this watch is that it's almost a Frankie, just offered officially by Tudor. There's quite a bit of fun spotting similar elements of the Royal from vintage Rolex and vintage Tudor (and maybe from other Genta designs). It also matches my lifestyle. I'm a grad student in STEM doing chemical lab works. I NEED date&day windows for my lab works. For me, an elegant tank of a watch.

I wish they could make the Day/Date work on the 38mm version. The 41mm is kind of large due to the case shape.

For me, in my mid 40's, and with a conservative dress style, calling something "old-fashioned" or a "grand dad watch" isn't a negative. I look for classic, timeless styling, and when I see this watch it's everything I need. The roman numerals are something I'm looking for in a watch, so that's not a negative. A lot of newer watches seem like the skinny-jeans style of suits... they look silly and will be outdated rather quickly. I've bought suits 12 years ago that still look fantastic now because I bought classic fits that will take a very long time to go out of style. And anyway, isn't it true that "everything old is new again"?

As a western consumer of this piece, it is truly an underrater entry luxury watch. The integrated bracelet is feeling a little out dated as its used by many other brands in various ways but Tudor does it so well with this piece and how it sits on the wrist. It is a very period feel watch rater then a new style sports watch where if your looking for a new piece its a nice compromise to the Rolex day-date or just- date wait list in a much more affordable fashion . That sort of elegance for the is price point is done beautifully. Its a piece you can wear everyday and makes its presence known. The silver dial is my personal favorite with this line because of how well is plays to the mix of polished and stainless finishes. Its a watch with so much character and usability for all occasions.

Tudor revamping models and going with in-house movements has usually caused a surge of interest. Maybe this is the next line for treatment. I don't like the bezel and the cut-offs of some of the roman numerals. Contrast the dial with the white and blue datejust roman dials (the numerals are either there or not which looks much tidier) which I find very pleasing. With some tweaking The Royal could be a winner
@frank327

Because of the case size, this wears larger. They really should have offered the date complication in 38, or even 36 (the Oysterquartz is 36, and does not look like a small watch on a man), especially as the trend is going smaller, and 41 with this case shape looks too large for all but the biggest wrists imo. Really hoping this is something they rectify in future iterations, as they'll have my money if they do (brown dial two tone, I'm thinking). Also, as others have commented, a quartz variant might present an interesting prospect, tying in with the design history. They're so close with this watch, a couple of tweaks and it could be a massive hit.

I like the Tudor Royal - it has a tons of character. I think it would look better without the Roman numerals and with slightly ticker polished links in the bracelet. The bezel is OK, but engine-turned in a style closer to what one might find on vintage datejusts would compliment it better, in my opinion.

I'm UK based and you rarely see these on the wrist. I've had mine for two years and absolutely love it. It was gift from my wife when we married. A Royal day date, gold dial and 18ct gold bezel and link inserts. Fit and finish is superb. My other watch watch is an Omega speedmaster moonwatch full mission spec, hesalite glass etc. Nobody comments on that watch but everybody notices the Tudor Royal. If Tudor discontinued the Royal, that's when you'd start to see an appreciation for it. Personally, I love wearing a watch that you don't often see on the wrists of others 👍

I really like the royal and I’m considering getting one. The value is frankly ridiculous and personally I think it looks lovely, however there’s just something about it which makes it not special and I can’t put my finger on it. I don’t know if it’s the fact that every other brand has a watch that looks almost identical, if the dial is just a bit empty, or if it’s because the watch doesn’t really know what it wants to be. I think if they released a version of the 38mm with the day complication and maybe added just something else to the dial above the 6, even if it was just the word royal, then it would be by far the best watch for £2000 pound.
