I feel a two way light system would work well in these underground mines. A flood/spot to work and a neon light to find the opal.

Maybe use soundwaves in the holes they drill, everything has a natural resonance vibration just like the wine glass when the opera singer breaks it .

I would use this method more often. Lots easier than drilling or blasting.

Jackhammering through gypsum is no party, I'd be leaving the masks on even when not hammering...the air is filled with dust you can't see. Save those lungs so you can enjoy the gains from the opal you find long into your old age.
