The aim of the tank is the clear a route, but likely also to taunt the other side. The spaced additional plates offer visiual cover to their weak points and shaped charges will dissipate to some degree before hitting the tank itself.
Entirely possible that taunting is an option but that shows an almost suicidal confidence in the spaced effect disrupting the Monroe effect. I definitely need to see more footage.
gonna be honest with the direct face to front combat being seen in Ukraine right now, additional applique armor to produce lower FPV drone vulnerability is probably one of the most relevant lines of thought for armor right now. Also consider this, a large flat top surface, likely interferes with the targeting systems for top attack munitions. The sensors related to positional acuity, might not be able to determine dead center of the tank thus the EFP munitions, whose performance massively depend on correct target alignment may be detonating over less vulnerable areas of the tank than the direct roof. Think this is a brilliant deployment from the Russians and an astute recognition to what they are losing units from. Cheers!
Good logical points although the EW package does create a similar profile to the turret on the BTR/BRDM which might make a good profile for non FPV drones. As to how effective it is I think we need to see if more are built. Given the rareness of construction I'm thinking that it's a local idea.
