One raccoon will destroy everything. As a matter of fact, a rat will get carnivorous and do tremendous damage. My suggestion is some lids. If you live in an ultra urban area with absolutely no raccoons well then all is well. But I dont know anywhere a raccoon troop doesnt roll through.
@GregsTurtleHaven

There are zip-tied lids; we took them off before filming

Dang I could have slept better last night. I was worried all night that last night could have been their last night. All is well, lids save lives.

Ha! I’m too intimidated by brackish water to even think about DBT’s. If I were I ask for another protected species on my permit it would probably be spotteds

Gregs Turtle Haven. I keep mine in freshwater ponds outside and the only difference that I can see is I have always kept them in a mud bottom. Even when they were in stock tubs. I notice the females spend a lot of time laying in the mud and I haven't had any skin or shell issues. (Knock on wood) my DbTs are also a few generations fresh water from the breeders I got them from.

I like the mud bottom idea. The wild ones I saw were in really thick mud

Gregs Turtle Haven that's what I noticed from doing some research on them in the wild. So far it's worked pretty well but I also have really good volcanic soil here, and I mixed it with peet moss 1:3 ratio.

I have some captive bred captive hatched produced by the director of the Bronx zoo now that I taken on trade for some of the albino babies I hatched recently. I will be keeping three maybe four to assure that I have both sexes as they are still fairly young. The other 3 or 4, I will be selling but they are amazing turtles. I never had them before until now and must admit, they are awesome!

Pretty cool set up! I'd love to have a set up like this one day, especially if it means helping save some endangered species. Sadly here in Illinois I'd need a greenhouse I think for best results haha xD

It amazes me say with the diamond back terripans or box turtles on how the laws changed on these amazing and some requiring licenses and limits of ownership on some species which raised their prices for the most part just like the c.b. alligator snapping turtles. I always loved the box turtles myself even when they were common and no laws were here at all. It is a total shame but these animals must be protected respectfully.

@@GregsTurtleHaven ... I had a baby Alligator snapper wild caught as a pet before all the laws changed from a prime turtle hatchling area in South Florida. It was one of my favorite all time turtles. But now that I have decades of experience with different species, they are not one I could manage as a full sized adult. I know a area in Tampa where they are all over the place, most there are 1 foot to two foot long there and they are in a area that had a lot of common snappers as well so it's snapping turtles Haven there. I released 3 alligator snappers 5 common into the private lake also that I live on this past year but I never go looking for them myself as periodically they show up in my driveway or nearby so I could only assume that they came out of this lake as it is. It is big enough to keep them and it most of the lake at least on my side of the lake, it goes down to about 7 to 10 feet so the water is perfect for them. What I do not like is periodically I find numbers of other species killed by the snappers as it's obvious. But that is nature. There is around 50 turtles that I feed daily here that know who I am by face including one of the Alligator snappers that I released here. I see him about three times a week coming up to me. The other snappers I have not seen since their release in my private lake. It's nice to have both captive and wild turtles here that I can enjoy even protected species all in one place indeed.

I've never have had issues with my dbt's in fresh water!?! I believe it's because their parents were raise in fresh water, I think if they have at times been exposed to brackish water in their lifespan is why it might affect them more! Either way if their health did change I would go to brackish because it's all about the importance to their health and Care!!! I always told my wife don't ever make me choose between you or my pets, pets win every time 😁

Enuff Said you probably have great filtration as well? I’ve seen that plays a big role with terrapins as well.
@enuffsaid7310
@enuffsaid7310 4 года назад
@@swamplifereptiles2133 I do have a great filtration system on all my tanks, I always put a larger system on my tanks then required. And at the same time I don't ever over crowd them, for me personally I like all of my breeds of turtles to have an abundant amount of habit space! For example my two dbt are adults and they have a 1500 gallon tank. My snapping turtle is about a size of a car steering wheel atm and he has a custom tub with 2800 gallons of water and a basking land area of 4ft by 8ft with uv and a heat lamp. Mind you their all indoor turtles bc our winters are very harsh in the Northern Midwest!
@swamplifereptiles2133
@swamplifereptiles2133 4 года назад
Enuff Said the filtration is key, I’m currently working on filtration improvements for my tubs to hopefully help with the skin fungus issues.

@@swamplifereptiles2133 I definitely wish you good luck with that! I'm just starting to expand my hobby to fish as well. but I'm starting slow because I don't have enough knowledge or experience! I'm also going to hit up RU-vid friends that are very educated and experienced with raising fish!
