Twerp incident summary excerpt from the imagination in aviation panel at ‪@EAA‬ Airventure 2018. The panel featured Dick Vangrunsven of Vans Aircraft, Peter Sripol of ‪@PeterSripol‬ and was hosted by Matt Jolley. This was one of the few times I have spoken about the Twerp accident publicly and I think it went well.

Imagine, sitting 25 years in a desert, getting ready to get put into a museum, and then out of nowhere, this guy with his X wing comes crashing into you.

Think of this...perfectly-sheering off all that energy held by the wings as Elliot rode-it-through to the outside ground, opened the canopy...and walked away - a good landing :). She was the world's most-beautiful Quickie by the master craftsman Alan Nelson; giving her all in this most-beautiful of results. Good thing too...Dick never billed me for her destroying the trailer.

I've watched that video before, frame by frame, examining your control and throttle movements trying to decipher your actions and decision making. It was great to have your context and thought processes behind it. Some excellent flying there, Elliot. Glad you came out the other side. Literally, I suppose. :)

Elliot - thanks for your candor and transparency and bringing the lay pilot into the world of the test pilot. The test pilot is a technologist, design team member and field test engineer ...NOT a high priced crash test dummy or adrenalin junkie. NASA test pilots and pilots like yourself continue to prove that time and time again. The sooner self-professed "airplane designers" appreciate/understand the high stakes and set aside their fragile egos the better the chances their project will come to fruition...or NOT, as the case may be! The Test Pilot's ability to constantly step back and ask the tough questions - no matter what - is what sets people like you apart. Wish every kit builder had Wasabi Test Program Certification...you should create one in concert with EAA! I'm the owner of an experimental kit built that went through a major gear mod, and tired of spam can weekend flyers offering to "check it out" for me! Despite the fact that mine was a factory mod done by a licensed A&P I see the value of a seasoned test pilot (not that i can afford it!)....but shocked at how designer/builders are taking their creations up in the air, literally "winging it" on the test pilotage!

Is there some reason the original video of this crash has been removed from RU-vid? It showed the lead-up, the crash and the aftermath but now this cut off clip is all I can find.

I did not see the Red Bull TV documentary before. Very interesting, scary and inspiring! Did this accident change the way you tackle new projects?
@utopiasnow
@utopiasnow 3 года назад
It changed everything and nothing. It's been several years now, the goal hasn't changed. Initially the correction was to take a lot less risk in cockpits which just means more hard conversations with owners. It turns out like most jobs this all comes down to people, you can always short cut that by exposing yourself and the program to enormous risk...but short of that you have to be able to communicate to the stakeholders your view of the situation and the path forward...and they don't teach that in engineering school.

But if the engine failed on short final, why trying to go around on one engine only?
@jtuttle11

The plane they are testing is OBVIOUSLY a Bert Rutan designed 'Quickie', Maybe they should ask other quickie builders or even the company that designed the plane what they did wrong.

Why such banked turns after the engine loss? Banking like that you lose lift, if he had gone wings level and used the rudder to compensate for the lost engine he may have been able to achieve a slow, but positive rate of climb. He also could have kept the wings level and used the rudder to yaw the aircraft away from the boneyard and on a somewhat parallelly course to the runway where there was just desert and tried to land or go around. Yes it is unconventional to yaw an aircraft to turn, but it keeps the wings level for generating maximum lift to climb.

Why didn't Elliot power down after losing the engine, as he told the NTSB they had agreed upon, while he was still level, under control, and over open dirt?

@@utopiasnow, should have listened to your wife after the fast taxi trial: ‘In my guts, that f**king engine quit’! Hold on to that one and listen to her next time! From an engineer’s standpoint, I’m left with a question: you needed to ballast the nose, the engines were lined up beside you so in the case of an uncontained disk rupture or blade loss, the shrapnel was going to hit you in the torso and obviously you hadn’t enough control authority to overcome an engine out at full power, so why not mount the engines further forward and on shorter pylons?
@nicholaslambert6390
@nicholaslambert6390 3 года назад
It would be cool to see Peter Sripol and Sam build another plane and have you run it through a rigorous testing program. It’s just a matter of time before they leave part103 and build bigger faster aircraft that would require expertise such as yours.

I remember that crash. Did it lose the ability to roll right? otherwise seems like just pilot error to turn in over the planes.
@utopiasnow
@utopiasnow 3 года назад
The engine flamed out. It was either crash with lateral control or climb without out it. Google VMC. Thanks for the comment
@DanFrederiksen
@DanFrederiksen 3 года назад
@@utopiasnow ok you say full right aileron at the very beginning. So the engine asymmetry completely overpowered the ailerons? how is that possible?? it has very weak ailerons because it's designed to be balanced and never challenged? so powering down would have given you back roll control? In retrospect I trust you'd agree powering down and gliding was the thing to do?
@DanFrederiksen
@DanFrederiksen 3 года назад
@@utopiasnow and I take it flight characteristics with one engine powered down was never explored? probably a good lesson for twin engine experimentals. Specifically in this case made worse by being near stall speed? Was there any aileron asymmetry in the design to compensate for the prop P-factor? that conspired with the asymmetric engine thrust.
@utopiasnow
@utopiasnow 3 года назад
Thanks for looking into that Dan. The wife angle makes the boneyard look further away than it is. If I would have shut down the remaining engine it looked like I would still have ended up in the front of the boneyard. At that moment I made the decision to try and fly and it didn’t work. I am not confident it would have gone better if I shut down. I think the winds were just too sporty for that flight that day. Anyway.
@DanFrederiksen
@DanFrederiksen 3 года назад
@@utopiasnow ok yeah, strong wind doesn't help small control surfaces. even with thrust you might have been able with full right to have maintained a slow level left curve enough to clear the planes. But if thrust means loss of control then idle has to be the lesson given flat terrain elsewhere. It might be possible you could have rolled to the right and then full throttle with full right deflection and maintained both control and level flight. alternating to idle when roll becomes critical. I'd say pretest engine out characteristics for twins and idle if control is lost. Loss of control is... bad :) stall is... bad

holdin' stick to full right as right engine is on max and left dead, still drifting to the left, catching altitude but stick is dead.. then decision, climb or controlled crash? cant climb, stick is dead.. throttle down it then for controlled crash and make stick work finally. killing stick with power should be obvious mistake. but first mistake was touching runway banked single wheel tilting the whole airframe and then go around single engine. this plane misses rudder control. dangerous stuff and great luck for pilot.

That was bad. Here's the truth of the matter your balls are big enough to carry in a dump truck but you use the experimental plane instead one of your balls slipped out between the cracks and had a slight cut open it up it was catching air and it mad too much drag on the left side and you fell to the ground and run into the trailer right or is that right enough. But on the other hand I think you are a damn good pilot willing to risk hurting yourself to do the work you do. God bless hope you have no more accidents
