Rod Serling was a genius at sending out messages (particularly civil and human rights) in his scripts. He was particularly adept at 'disguising' his messages from those who might want to censor him as well. A fascinating and truly good man.
Not only is this a great message that rings truer to me now than it ever did before, but it also tickles me that Burgess Meredith finally got to have his books in the end.
[Edited ]It was really fun to watch. I do think he misunderstood the purpose of Wordsworth's "revenge". It wasn't petty or anything of the sort. It wasn't even revenge. There's a old saying: To fool the enemy, you must fool your friends." In this case, the enemy is clear. It's the Chancellor of the State. So, who are the friends? The viewers. It's the viewers who must Trust Wordsworth in order to understand what he's thinking, trying to accomplish, the message he wishes to get across. What's the message/idea? That the State's Chancellor doesn't have the courage of his convictions. He's as empty as his proclamations, beliefs, slogans, propaganda, and judgements; which are, in turn, as empty as the State itself. Wordsworth was never going to kill the Chancellor. He wanted to show him the truth about the State as being empty, faithless, craven, and cowardly. Especially in how they judge and condemn those they deem obsolete -- thinkers, artists, people of faith, rebels, independent types, and those who are truly gifted and talented (read the short story, Harrison Bergeron. It's not at all long, but it's extremely powerful, mirroring this episode). Those types of people are Always the first targets of All authoritarian governments. Wordsworth proves why that is. Everything that the Chancellor thought, believed, and said was dumped into him. It didn't come from original thought, reflection, or morality. It was all false, just like his belief that the State cared about him because he rose through the ranks on the blood and terror he committed against those who refused to bow down. "For the love of God" was Wordsworth's revenge, if love, compassion, independence, and faith are revenge. Much like being happy, successful, and having inner peace are the "best" revenge against those who seek to destroy you. You know, like The Bible says, "Bless them that curse you". And so, Wordsworth had his revenge. In the end, he was successful and went to his God in peace. And the Chancellor? Well, he quickly found out about the "mercies" the State bestows upon their "friends". That turn was immediate. Not only was the State willing to let him die, but they were More than willing to kill him. The Chancellor became obsolete the moment he became a feeling Human Being
Our problem is not too much freedom. Our problem is selective freedom. We hold sacred the right to self destruction, but not the freedom to criticize the hedonistic, self destructive, lifestyle. You must respect, accept and celebrate self destruction or it is a hate crime.
We are actually not disagreeing, I think you just don't like the words that I used to say the same thing. What you're describing is the concept of moral relativism. The "hedonistic, self destructive, lifestyle" that you describe is because too much of American culture (in my opinion) has accepted the axiom that "no one has the authority to say what is right or wrong" (ie. moral relativism). I referred to the concept of "moral relativism" as "too much freedom". Sure, every time the outcomes (both personal and cultural), of someone's "hedonistic, self destructive, lifestyle" is called into question, such a person hides behind the shield of "everything being relative", and no one having the moral (or sometimes legal) authority over them to call their decisions into question. What you accuse those people of doing is being totalitarian in their cultural beliefs of moral relativism (your "hate crime"). That's the historical irony that I pointed out. Thank you for the view, but it's possibly you may have misunderstand my reaction. And as far as things "coming to pass", *civilization is on a cycle.* It only looks like "beginnings and endings" because the average person only interprets events as it pertains to their lifespan. The conservative-minded human will assert dominance and tighten their grip, only for another cycle of liberalism to take over after their version of oppression, and vice-versa. *One only needs to consult history to see the cycles.* This is the time that we live in, *and the only thing that's special about our time is the speed at which things go back and forth.*

It should be said this episode, and several Twilight Zones, references the Cold War. You can see the State is referring to communist Russia, while Mr Wordsworth (an individual) is the U.S. I don't think Rod Serling was dealing with U.S. propaganda, but rather he had a genuine concern of communism.
